RE Job Offer but won't give higher title

Background on Me

  • I have 2.5 years of experience in REPE
  •  Have worked with a REIT for a year during that time frame on the AM and Acquisitions side
  • Currently a Senior Analyst.

The offer is from a $50b+ investment manager. It would be on the RE asset management side of their hedge fund. Offer is $110K base with bonus. TC: about $145k+

However, I asked for an associate title with my experience and they won't budge. All other positions I've been looking at are associate level and no one has a problem with that but them. Am I crazy to turn down this offer for a better title? I don't want to be an analyst for 4 years....

I've been holding on to the offer for a week. Please provide any comments!

Since it's a hedge fund type of firm, I would check to see how they list their seniority titles. Plenty of long short hedge funds just have titles such as only Analyst, Senior Analyst, and Portfolio Manager. If that's the case, then an Associate title doesn't make sense. But if not, the firm is kind of being shitty about it, if you've stated that pay is fine but you just want the title.

Have you asked them for a reason on why not and talked to them on why you want the title? I also suggest talking to them about when you could see a title bump if not right away. I know some places (BX, for example) may have you take a step down in title or stay the same when joining the firm for a few months to "prove yourself".

Lastly, if the offer seems like a good opportunity for you other than the offer, I would take it. Titles don't matter as much. You can talk to any future employer and they know you have 4+ YOE.
