I haven’t particularly followed it, but it’s likely one of two things:
1. Structural failure: the submersible is made out of carbon fiber instead of steel, and if one part of the carbon fiber cracks even slightly, then the waters of the deep will violently crush the whole thing like a tin can in seconds.
2. Power failure: the propulsion systems quit working, in which case they were either sitting ducks who have now run out of oxygen or went through a structural failure (see #1).
Maybe the Logitech gamepad used to control the sub stopped working...
There’s fighter jets that use game equipment, so I don’t have a big beef there, but this submersible was built to lower standards than a military outfit, so who knows right now.
90% chance thing the thing suffered structural failure and imploded under the pressure of a bajillion tons of water. Those guys have been dead for the last 3 days.
I would agree that this is most likely what happened
Big RIP, at least the CEO won’t have to worry about his lawsuit anymore
Latest I read was that they have heard intermittent banging - every 30 minutes - on sonar and are assuming that the noise is manmade. The mechanics of any sort of rescue at that depth on limited time sound near impossible.
These Search and Rescue Missions are quite daunting. The area they need to cover is vast and huge. I really hope they find these folks soon. Generally speaking, ships or transport vessels should ought to have a GPS locator onboard - generally activated and stays on after X hours when power goes out.
Here is a good question. 5 people onboard breathing oxygen. You have a pocket knife and are stuck onboard. Do you attempt to kill the 4 other passengers to give yourself more oxygen and a better chance of being found?
This is assuming that the vessel didnt implode.
Here is a good question. 5 question onboard breathing oxygen. Do you kill the other 4 and risk getting hurt by them as they fight back, in exchange for just a longer time to die and possibly getting thrown into jail even if you were rescued, or do you co-operate with the others in ways such as banging the walls for example which raises the chances of getting found?
I think it is pretty wild if you read the details of the vessel, doesn't seem that high tech looking at potential safety measures if something goes wrong.A sort of x box controller like remote to operate the thing. No real third party safety checks or certification or something. You have to have a lot of faith in these organisers to go through with this and pay 250k per person. Personally I would get really uncomfortable in such a small space with 5 people and I wouldn't consider myself claustrophobic.

Woke idiot who pilots his critical piece of machinery with a video game controller gets to finish life as a smear on the inside of his toy. How appropriate.
Glad the major takeaway is that the guy is "woke". Really homing in on the important things!
I don't see a particular reason to care. A bunch of people did an extremely dangerous thing for no real purpose - this is a risk they signed up to take. Hopefully all that can be done to rescue them, is being done, but to the extent it isn't possible, this doesn't feel like something anyone outside the families of the (potentially) deceased should take more than a couple seconds to think about. And even then, in more of a "maybe recreational excursions to one of the places on Earth most inimical to human life isn't a great idea."
You have to remember that most people's lives are extremely boring, so most people are probably just grabbing on to this to have something to talk about at the water cooler while they all wait for the drafts coming up.
I mean, I called him an idiot too but him being woke is definitely part of it. He explicitly says in an interview that most experienced sub-operators are ex-military who he describes as "50-y/o white guys that are uninspiring". So rather than hire experienced people to build and pilot a craft that his and other people's lives literally depend on, he decided to go with a younger more inexperienced team. He then proceeds to build this shitbox steered by a game controller that amazingly managed to make a few trips without imploding, thought he'd turn it into a touring business, and subsequently killed himself and his passengers. It's poetic. But sure, be butthurt about it like usual. Maybe sign up for OceanGate's next venture while you're at it.
Yeah it is hilarious. Nothing bad can happen at the bottom of the ocean. All to see a ship out of a glorified porthole in a low tech metal tube
That's not what it's about. It's about being able to tell your other billionaire friends what a badass you are and what an exclusive experience you received the next time that you're drinking $1,000 bottles of wine over dinner. Not kidding at all. This is the reason that they are in that tube.
Basically. But we all live to flex on each other as a species and experiences is a way to do that, they are just playing in a different league entirely. Not worth a death sentence at all, and isn't an indictment on their character.
But yea, to the 'I could just look at videos of the wreckage on the surface' they are missing the point and thrill these people are after. You could just watch F1 on TV as well but it's a ton more fun to have the money to do it yourself.
The only mistake was IMO picking something as lame as this to go against your personal risk assessment vs cool story equation. Jump out of a helicopter to go skiing down a remote mountain and die by an avalanche is one thing, frozen on top of everest sure, your record breaking trans atlantic flight crashing sucks but I get it. But to sit for 8 hours bare foot for and cross legged in a glorified shit filled Rav 4 to maybe get a glimpse of some boat wreckage? Tough L to take.
The more that is coming out about this vessel...who on earth would get on this thing?
I saw a video advertising it and they must have said safe 10 times. People are focused on the contract saying death is a potential outcome but I sign a similar contract to go get my teeth cleaned at the dentist - I doubt anyone onboard really knew how dangerous it was.
RIP
I feel like if I was going down to the bottom of the ocean my risk evaluation would be a little more rigorous than a dentist appointment. People with more money than sense I guess.
The stepson of the UK billionaire on board has an interesting grieving process https://twitter.com/nypost/status/1671575709528072198
It’s a pretty sad situation, my condolences go out to the families. What’s bad is that the company fired the engineer that told them their were problems with the craft. They knew what they were doing. This company isn’t going to survive this.
Company was screwed no matter what. Was already pretty bootstrapped, and now with this press and CEO going down with the ship.
Yea, no chance
I'm pretty sad about how much joy much of the internet is taking in these people's misfortune. Sure did they do something unbelievably stupid with a guy who blatantly disregarded safety? Yeah, but they're still people deserving of empathy.
You actually pick up on something important here.....we've been conditioned to not think of billionaires as human beings or rich people in general. That's one reason that people are having such a good time with this online.
If this was a middle class family swept out to sea on a small unsafe boat, the tone and narrative would be much different.
We live in an age where we call evil good and good evil. Envy and covetousness (as well as pride...) are championed in our society not as an unfortunate reality of sin but as a positive good--a virtue. So, I'm not at all surprised by the reaction of many in the general public.
I hope the billionaire Pakistani family reimburses American taxpayers for all the money deployed in the search and rescue
