Are any of y’all big into YouTube, and if so, what channels do you follow?

During the pandemic, I got into YouTube videos as I can watch them at 2x speed, and a lot of the content is solid. Below are some of my favorite channels:

ReportOfTheWeek
- fast food review
JomboyMedia
- sports
Ordinary Sausage
- makes sausage from literally anything
TheDooo
- Omegle guitar covers and funny gaming
Maxamili
- funny Omegle videos
Guga Foods
- cooking (primarily steak and meat)
penguinz0
- words can’t describe what this man does
Ross Creations
- public pranks
ThatWasEpic
- public pranks
Slappers
- parodies of movies and modern living
BroScienceLife
- makes videos when Dom needs rent $$$

For those of you familiar with me, you know I’m also huge into military history. Below are some amazing channels:

Combat Story
- former CIA interviews DEVGRU/Delta
MedalOfHonorBook
- interviews MOH recipients
Memoirs of WWII
- interviews WWII veterans

If they aren't hyperlinked it's because the comment function was being weird and trying to link to a vid that didn't exist.

Music channels

Political/Cultural Commentary

  • Michael Malice (an odd dude who's well read and asks thoughtful questions)
  • David Smith (the best Libertarian commentator in my opinion)
  • Zuby (all around interesting guy with unique takes on current events as someone raised in Saudi Arabia)
  • Jimmy Dore (my favorite left-wing commentator by far)
  • Matt Christiansen (the blonde he does his podcast with has some super cringe conservative takes but most of his arguments are well presented & thought out)
  • Secular Talk (his lack of understanding of how the business world works is painful to listen to, but he's one of the most genuine progressives I've come across)
  • OxfordUnion (good debates)

History

  • Dan Carlin (hardcore history is the shit)
  • Asha Logos (Western culture)
  • Biographics (great little historical bios)

Cannot recommend him highly enough. Great channel.

Tim pool is an all time grifter bro cmon now

I vehemently disagree. Can you back this up in any way? Provide any examples? Maybe you need to revisit what the meaning of a grifter is. If he wanted to grift he would pick one side and parrot all their talking points without straying in order to play to their lowest common denominator and heavily monetize with ads.

Why SCMP?  They're no longer independent, they even interviewed a guy named Guo Minhai the CCP randomly kidnapped in Thailand where he "confessed" to a long string of crimes that were clearly tortured out of him.  Fox or CNN would never do anything so vile.

It's always important to understand what narratives press that presents as "independent" but in reality is effectively guided by China is trying to lead with. Understanding their positions helps me understand what they think is important and guess what their decisions might be. I also follow China Uncensored who I suppose I should add to the list.

Fox and CNN both propagated complete lies to justify and defend the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are both more vile than what you just described by magnitudes. There is no news organization in the world with more blood on their hands than the corporate press in the US.

Most Helpful
  1. Montemayor: Great tactical analysis of WWII naval battles. I love WWII history and never gave a shit about the naval side of things until I came across his channel - specifically his video about Midway from the Japanese POV
was amazing and gives a great overview of one of the highest leverage snap decisions in the entire war (Nagumo's Dilemma). I actually fly out of Midway Airport (in Chicago) quite a bit and I now really enjoy walking around the SBD dive bomber exhibit - it's not a huge plane and it's crazy to think one of these things could (and did) sink aircraft carriers.
  2. Operations Room: Not as good as Montemayor (I find the guy's presentation a bit dry) but certainly a lot more content. Still very enjoyable tactical battle overviews.
  3. KTO and Flemlo: Good football based story telling of cool/unique stories, recaps of various events (e.g. how did the 5 QBs taken in the XYZ NFL draft pan out?), etc.
  4. Secret Base: Specifically, Rewinder - love rewinding to relive some iconic sports moments. This is the old SB Nation channel
  5. agadmator: Chess analysis (I barely even know how to play chess but I love his charisma and enjoy pretending I follow what's going on
  6. Foolish Baseball: Again, I don't really even like baseball... but I like this channel a lot.
  7. Lord Ravenscraft: Misc literary/film analysis. I searched for Animorphs on YT once and he had like, one vid at the time on this topic. I binged like half his channel that night. Might even re-read Animorphs TBH.
  8. Geowizard: If you have ever played Geoguessr, you'll be amazed at how good this guy is
  9. If you just search for like "best sports moments since 2000" or "best world cup goals", you'll go down some fun rabbit holes

Had to come back and edit because I forgot my boy NDYakAngler. If you like fishing, this is by far my favorite channel for that... I find a lot of fishing youtubers can be annoyingly over the top excited catching mediocre fish - this guy has the calmest demeanor catching monsters. Please just watch this https://youtu.be/A1CYBSU3bZA?t=111

You just gave me a ton of new binge material. Gracias

I thought I was the only one watching those obscure channels. The Battle of Midway from Japanese POV, with Nagumo's Dilemma, was epic.  I would have made the same calls as Nagumo ... and lost.  All except the closing of the distance to the American battle group. That was dumb.  But recovering the planes would have been my call too.  So much of history was decided in a handful of minutes, and the fate of the Pacific Theatre, the course of the war, and likely the course of all of history was decided in a few fateful moments on a number of occasions.

You should check out Shattered Sword if you haven't read it already. Great book, seems to be the basis for Montemayor's videos. The author brings up some good points about Japanese mistakes (e.g. perhaps 2 carriers could have recovered aircraft while the other 2 launched a strike immediately).

Tangentially related (but maybe interesting for this board given finance focus) - I tried to quantify $ (or yen) impact of these sinkings. Reddit tells me Japanese aircraft carriers had a build cost of 40-80M yen. At the time, the Japanese GNP was roughly 20 billion yen. So if the total build cost of all 4 carriers was something like $200M yen, then value roughly equal to 1% of WWII Japan's GNP was destroyed in one day.

This Ichika Nito kid is badass

One of their founders is ex-Blackstone/Hellman Friedman which is kind of cool

Fairace: Really helped me cover my F1 fix when it was off during Covid. Their survive the hunt series is hilarious

Balon: Best professional grade football documentary channel made by an amateur guy using original footage.

Into the cryptovese: For a level headed take on the crypto market.

Economics explained: for simple explanation of world event through the lens of economics

For outdoors / camping interests :

1. Kraig Adams — the best hiking videos you can find on YouTube. Picturesque, borderline surreal photography. Great for feeling the outdoors when stuck in an office <p> </p>
 2. Xander Budnick — camping videos of just a guy being a guy in the woods, is just entertaining to watch and makes camping seem attainable<p> </p>
 3. Mav — similar to 2, but more vlog styles and does truck camping, which is cool<p> </p>
 4. This is my Alaska — a mix of small scale construction and the outdoors, in Alaska. Basically like watching to roadmap my dream retirement plan - building a cabin in the middle of nowhere <p> </p>

For everything else :

  A. Hyram — everyone should take care of their skin and this is a great place to start learning about skincare<p> </p>
  B. Dr. John Campbell — COVID through statistics and studies curated by an old chill British guy <p> </p>
 C. SmarterEveryDay — if nothing above peaked your interest, this channel has something for absolutely everyone
