Best City to Move to for Career Opportunities

I hear that NYC keeps losing business due to multiple factors and banks are starting to diversify out to Dallas, Nashville, Charlotte etc.

Living in a small, regional city, I’ve debated for a couple years now on taking a leap of faith & moving to a bigger city, primarily NYC, to pursue capital markets. As I get older, I want this to materialize within the next year.

What city would you advise that has the most opportunities or will have in the future? I.e. at the height of my career in 20 years. Will NYC ever lose its luster? Where do you believe the most growth opportunities will be at?

Personally, I’m eyeing Dallas.

NYC is still the financial center, and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The banking jobs moving into the secondary cities are back and middle office (IT, risk, compliance), and some front-office jobs in asset management and regional banking groups. The best opportunities and deals are still in NYC.

For tech and tech related investing, obviously SF Bay Area. Seattle is growing, but most of the jobs there are "pure" tech as opposed to investing. L.A. has some great fixed income/credit shops such as Oaktree, Canyon, DoubleLine, TCW, Ares, PIMCO. A few good PE shops as well such as Leonard Green and Gores.

Dallas and Nashville are awesome! I honestly enjoy it way more than the big cities I have lived in (NYC,Chicago…) I have spent a lot of time in both of them and live in one of the two cities. I am never leaving, (though Nashville has a decently high COL if you want to buy a house). Your life will slow down and give you more time to enjoy things, like the many attractions of Dallas or the mountains outside of Nashville.
