the real flex is being so wealthy and confident you drive a mid-range Lexus because time is money and you need a car that does its job and never breaks. There are branch managers financing M4s / C63s but from a pure driver's perspective, BMW M has been on a roll with their CS models and the C63 hybrid has been bombing in terms of sales. If you really want to flex an M-car then it should be an M1 or an E92 M3 GTS or similar. AMG would be a black series.
BMWs make sports cars that are luxurious and Mercedes makes luxurious cars that are sporty. If anyone is at all interested in things like tuning, engine modding, or building your vehicle in general, BMW is far superior.
"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee
Mercedes AMG is more of a flex imo when it comes to your average non-enthusiast. They just have a lot of presence. If you wanna flex to fellow car enthusiasts, then M cars. If you want to flex to car enthusiasts but you live in a snowy climate - Audi RS.
Agree w/ philbegas - AMG turns more heads from non-car-heads, while a proper M will incite more conversation between car enthusiasts. However, I don't think the primary purpose of your car should be to flex, rather what you prioritize in a vehicle. I've driven a lot of 'em, and I think Germany's 'big three' brands each have their strongholds:
1. BMW M: Handling and (relative) reliability. No debate here - some AMGs make more power, but BMW's handling performance is like no other, my personal favorite to drive. Also think their manual gearboxes beat the pants off the others.
2. Audi RS: Exterior looks and sleekness. I do think Audis looks the best of all of 'em by far, at least on the outside. That's about it though - test test-drove an auto RS3 before deciding on my manual M2, just preferred what BMW had to offer.
3. Mercedes AMG: Interior looks and power. Mercedes interiors usually kill it - some newer ones I find a smidgen gaudy, but they overall win this sector. Plenty of 'em do produce more direct power than anything BMW or Audi makes, but I wouldn't trade raw power versus handling / performance that I think BMW reigns superior on. They do look 'cool', however, if that's also your jam.
Had this debate (between cars, not about flex) about a year ago... was deciding between an X5M, GLE63 AMG, and Range Rover. All have around the same horsepower and are V8s. Ended up going with the Range Rover Sport SVR and haven't looked back. Although sometimes when I see the others I think what if. I highly considered a Cayenne GTS as well.
With all that said... didn't really take the "flex" into account. Just went with what I liked.
Only the real M’s matter. M5 is one of the only legitimate M series left. I cringe at the other models, the M3 e46 was amazing, new stuff is just blah.
Both brands are very diluted now hence the M or AMG badge on anything with that trim level. It was M3, M5, M6 and now you have M340i lol because it has a M steering wheel. I had an X5 M and find it funny when I drive past an X5 with M badging on the back with the 40i V6. They’re just milking it but real car enthusiasts know. Too many wannabes driving beamers now which is why I sold mine.
Also had an E55 AMG for a while years ago and now see all these 43 and 53? variants. The 63 (6.0+ liter V8) is the real AMG. The higher end models (actual AMGs/Ms with the related engines) are legit and both have advantages. M/BMW is an enthusiast/drivers car and wants to be whipped. Handling and agility is premier. AMG is more raw power, less nimble, but interior is far more luxe in my opinion. Only Audis I would consider are from the RS line, the rest are too feminine.
That said, I’m on the RR game now and haven’t looked back. Most people can’t afford them (especially maintaining them properly) and the styling is discreet but iconic. Clean lines (hate the kidney grills and the overdone front ends on a lot of BMWs now). Other dude who posted here with the SVR knows what I’m talking about. Not as much of a pure drivers car like the Cayenne Turbo or X5 M which I also considered, but the exhaust note is absurd. Generally less of them around too. Another poster pointed out that real money has a mid level Lexus because they are reliable and best “luxury” value, which is 100% true. I read a few years ago the most common car among billionaires is the RX 330. We also have a Lexus LX for longer drives with 100k + miles on it - zero issues.
Just my two cents and have never bought any of the cars I’ve owned to “flex” - I bought them mostly for performance and fuck you speed.
Definitely bmw m cars. One of my friends owns a 2020 m5 competition and its an absolute monster. The sheer power it produces and driving dynamics are unmatched, truly a driver focused car. I currently drive an e92 335i primarily because its like owning a modern day skyline (6spd manual, awd, twin turbo, straight 6) and I love it...when it doesnt break down. The AMG's are alright, I think they're focused too much on luxury and comfort.
For Mercedes, I like the G65 or the V12 Biturbo Brabus G65.

E30 or E36 M3. Prove that you aren't a soy-boy unable to deal with a real sportscar. For a Merc, I've always been partial to the 190D. I also echo pajero's like for the E55 AMG, but at that point the CTS-V of the same era becomes a very tempting option too.

I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.
Amg e63 s and m5 are dope. One interesting thing I noticed in nyc is how not many people drive Mercedes or BMW, or nice cars in general. In other cities, a higher percentage of people seem to drive nice cars.

Yeah because nobody drives in NYC. In Miami and LA they drive flashy cars.

Agree the r8 is sweet, a lot of audis are really cool (rs6,rs7) but personally i think BMW and MB have better lineups.
Track times are irrelevant to me because I will never be good enough to even come close.
I will say, at some point say 100k+, you have so many options that its kind of hard to choose without test driving. 250k-300k I would likely try to get into a 992 GT3 Touring or Viper ACR. in a perfect world i'd have 40+ cars
Yes!!!!!!!! Although not the fastest in a straight line, Lotus cars do excellent on the track and many car experts note it is the most fun car to drive.

AMG cars and SUVs are famous for their stunning performance derived from the brand’s racing heritage combined with luxurious, high-quality craftsmanship. AMG vehicles occupy a wide price range, some being budget-friendly to the average driving enthusiast, but others have sky-high price tags.
Here are some of the most expensive AMG models on Autotrader. We’ve taken the most expensive examples of a handful of different models. Otherwise, this list would be AMG GT and G-Class models.
1. 2021 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG – $1,299,208
This 2021 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG is listed on Autotrader for $1,299,208.
The most expensive AMG model on Autotrader as of this writing is a one-in-a-million opportunity. In other words, you’ll need to spend about $1.3 million for this one-of-a-kind Brabus 800 XLP SuperWhite Mercedes-AMG G 63. This German-modified beast is powered by an 800-horsepower Biturbo V8, and it has the utility of a truck bed. It also has a luxurious interior with white quilted leather seats and a widescreen cockpit. Make sure it will fit in your garage before you spend a milli on this truck. See 2021 Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG models for sale
2. 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series – $599,000
This 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series is listed on Autotrader for $599,000.
There are many expensive AMG GT models on Autotrader. Here is the priciest one. It comes from the Black Series with menacing aesthetics and the raucous performance to match. Its many performance upgrades over the plain old AMG GT are a flat-plane crankshaft, a higher redline, and a bigger compressor wheel. The result is 720 horsepower, 590 lb-ft of torque, and a record-breaking (at the time) Nürburgring time of 6:43.616. See 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT models for sale
3. 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition – $549,989
This 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Final Edition is listed on Autotrader for $549,989.
The SLS AMG GT was a predecessor to the AMG GT and a true spiritual successor to the original Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. It has a nice balance of traditional and modern styling and perennially cool gullwing doors. The rare Final Edition is largely an appearance package with lots of carbon fiber, a unique Designo interior, special wheels, and more. The 6.2-liter V8 packs a whopping 583 hp without any help from forced induction. This particular model seems to have been in storage since it was delivered to the dealer and still comes with the original manufacturer’s warranty. See 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG models for sale
4. 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series – $450,762
This 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG Black Series is listed on Autotrader for $450,762.
The R230 SL 65 AMG Black Series is pretty cool and pretty fast, making 661 hp (57 more than the non-Black Series) and 738 lb-ft of torque from its twin-turbo V12. It’s also 551 pounds lighter than the regular SL 65 AMG because of all the carbon fiber. Plus, this Mars red exterior makes it look as delicious as a candy apple. See 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG models for sale
5. 2017 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S 650 Cabriolet – $325,900
This 2017 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is listed on Autotrader for $325,900.
Can a Maybach be considered an AMG car? It’s debatable, but for this one, I say “yes” because it has Mercedes-Benz badges and an AMG engine under the hood. That’s close enough for me. The Maybach S 650 Cabriolet was essentially a super luxurious version of the S 65 AMG. It was limited to 300 units, and this one appears to be in like-new condition. See 2017 Mercedes-Benz S 65 AMG models for sale
6. 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 – $288,790
This 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 is listed on Autotrader for $288,790.
This may be the newest new Mercedes-AMG model on this list, but there’s also quite a markup for this reborn classic. Available only as an AMG model, the R232 roadster ditches the power-folding hardtop of the previous generation for a proper ragtop. It also leans into its sporty heritage with a 577-hp twin-turbo V8, 4matic all-wheel drive, and all-wheel steering. Its lighter and sleeker design also carries a lower center of gravity than the outgoing model. This SL 63 comes in white and the Touring Trim. See 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 models for sale
7. 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S – $264,900
This 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S is listed on Autotrader for $264,900.
Here we have the most expensive 4-door AMG GT on Autotrader. It’s certainly the one you want; an AMG GT 63 S that appears to be loaded with just about every available option. Its twin-turbo V8 makes 630 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque, but it has four doors, all-wheel drive, and plenty of safety features so that it could pass as a family car. Just make sure everyone is buckled up when you turn on drift mode. See 2020 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S models for sale
8. 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG – $224,990
This 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG is listed on Autotrader for $224,990.
If the G-Class isn’t your style, the next craziest AMG SUV is the GLS 63 AMG. This high-performance SUV doesn’t forget it’s a luxurious family vehicle. If you want an AMG car with 3-row seating, this is the one you want. Power comes from a Biturbo V8 with the EQ Boost mild hybrid system making over 600 hp. This SUV captures the AMG ethos of superior luxury and performance without compromise. See 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG models for sale
9. 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS – $201,999
This 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS is listed on Autotrader for $201,999.
This is the first appearance on this list by an all-electric Mercedes-AMG model. Consider this an eco-conscious family car. Or, consider this a sleeper sedan that generates 649 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque directed to all wheels that will go from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, using the 751-hp Race Start boost. Inside, the new MBUX Hyperscreen stretches across the entire dash and houses 12.3-inch displays for the driver and passenger and a 17.7-inch OLED central multimedia display. The AMG EQS only has an estimated range of 277 miles, but this kind of performance and luxury comes with a cost. See 2022 Mercedes-AMG EQS models for sale

I heard the GT3 was a good daily driver. Wouldn't you want to drive it over the Camry to work or are you trying to keep the miles low?

It's just not fun to drive in bumper to bumper traffic. I try not to be one of those owners who care about mileage - I've put on 20K miles in 1.5 years after all - but I want to make sure it's good miles and that I'm getting smiles per mile.
Plus I've straight piped it so it is literally wake-the-dead loud.
I saw a BMW M8 Competition today in blue. It looked sick!

I personally hate all BMW drivers

if youre a gear head, M series is prob cooler but I'm just a poser with impeccable taste and I choose AMG all day
As always…

Mercedes are for ladies. Thought everyone knew this.

Too many realtors and broke Middle Eastern guys in my area drive BMWs so the brand is locally diluted a bit

M5 V10 was cool too.
Mercedes G / GLC Coupé any day of the week

AMG cars and SUVs are famous for their stunning performance derived from the brand’s racing heritage combined with luxurious, high-quality craftsmanship. AMG vehicles occupy a wide price range, some being budget-friendly to the average driving enthusiast, but others have sky-high price tags.

5. 2017 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S 650 Cabriolet – $325,900
6. 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 63 – $288,790
Wow these are nice cars - didn’t know about many of them. Which of these are some of your favorites?
///M Power all the way. It's just more of a driver's car
The real answer is Porsche.
Had a 2019 C63S and while I never owned a M car, my roommate in college had a 2017 M4 Comp. Now I have a GT3 for the weekend and drive a Camry to work.
M8's are so fkn clean
