Bonus Bananas September 6, 2013
1) Fund Of Fund Manager Caught In Prostitution Bust (FIN Alternatives) - No matter how bad a week you've had, this poor bastard has you beat. On top of everything else, his wife is the majority shareholder in his company. What do you think his bonus review is going to be like this year?
2) Is The Cult Of Central Bankers Unraveling? (Forbes) - Probably the best piece on monetary policy and the growing irrelevance of central banks that you'll read this month. Warning: it's pretty in-depth, so grab a cup of coffee first.
3) Prominent Doctor Said to Be Tied to Insider Trading Case at SAC (DealBook) - Joel Ross, a prominent NJ Alzheimer's doc, is the latest guy to be snared in the government's SAC net. Evidently he was feeding Martoma data on drug trials.
4) Customer buys promoted tweet to complain about British Airways (NBC News) - Get ready to see a lot more of this stuff. Social media has given everyone on the planet a megaphone. If you're a company in today's world, customer experience had better be the top 3 things you think about every day.
5) 9 questions about Syria you were too embarrassed to ask (Washington Post) - Syria has dominated the news for the past two weeks, and this is the best 5-minute primer on the subject that I've seen. This whole situation is just lose-lose for the U.S.
6) Amazon’s Kindle MatchBook will let you buy cheap digital editions of print books you already own (Paid Content) - This is fantastic news if you're an old guy like me and you literally have bookshelves 18-feet wide by 6-feet high filled to overflowing. Amazon recently did this with digital music as well. (Disclosure: I'm long AMZN.)
7) Facebook employees reveal the worst things about working for the social network (The Telegraph) - Brace yourselves, because this might come as a shock: Mark Zuckerberg can be kind of a douche. It's kinda funny to read what these guys bitch about within the context of working in banking.
8) Dangers of Buying a Car with a Student Loan (Debt.org) - Anybody smart enough to be reading WSO probably doesn't need to be told this, but just in case...
9) Sex, Drugs, and the Biggest Cybercrime of All Time (Rolling Stone) - Must read of the week. Absolutely fascinating. I always picture some smoky Eastern European hack farm as the guys behind these huge identity thefts. I had no idea the ringleader could be a 25-year old college dropout zorched on ketamine in Miami.
10) ‘Lamar Spent $50K On Co***ne In Three Years… He Even Smoked It Before An NBA Game,’ Star’s ‘Mr. Fix It’ Claims (Radar Online) - Co***ne's a hulluva drug...
Video of the Week:
Who doesn't love screwing with job applicants in an interview? In this case, LG ran a pretty clever prank on their n00bs, being that they're in the HD LCD business to begin with. Funny stuff.
That's it for this week, stallions. Have a tremendous weekend and let me know what you think about this week's batch of Bananas in the comments!
True, but the vast majority of my library (I'm guessing 85%+) came from Amazon. I willing to bet that goes for most big readers.
LOL to #1 I like how the guy is the CEO and CIO of Common Sense Investment Management. Poor Bastard....
Agree with Amazon statement. The only time I buy that isn't from Amazon, is when I'm looking at books in a store and make an impulse buy. Either than that, it's all Amazon
Don't have time to read them all yet, but #4 is awesome. Does anyone have a ballpark number for what that would've cost him?
This prostitution sting thing is just beyond stupid. Surely the police can find better uses of their limited resources than going after consensual adults engaging in commercial transactions. The U.S really needs to move beyond its arcane, puritanical moralism and decriminalize all the so-called crimes of "moral turpitudes". The good news is that hope appears to be on the horizon, now that even uber-conservatives at the National Review are coming around on this issue: http://www.nationalreview.com/article/352932/legalize-prostitution-char…
Having said that, I would be very wary to invest with a manager like this guy. I can't believe he would fall for such a simple police trap. I wouldn't trust his ability to vet HF managers and differentiate the goods one from the Madoffs of the world.
10) Seemingly blithe in his irony the dealer says "Dude you are an addict." Good Lord.
For an article that is supposed to explain the Syrian situation objectively I found #5 to be extremely biased. Don't know why I expected more from Washington Post.
5- This pic from the economist made me chuckle. Anyway, I say we start getting paid for being the world police or we bail on it. It's a position someone has to fill and I'm pretty sure we don't mind it being us for obvious reasons, but we don't have the money for it.
3.)
Number 4 is good.
