Cornell ILR vs Vanderbilt?

Hey guys, I've already posted a thread like this in the IB forum, but I didn't really get satisfactory answers. So basically I've been accepted as a transfer to both Cornell ILR and Vanderbilt for Econ. I want the best prospects for both consulting and ib (I'm really interested in both, but obviously will only pick one). I cannot change my majors at Cornell so I'll graduate as an ILR major. At Vandy, I can but there would be no point because there really isn't a better degree than economics (and they have no finance degree). I like the atmosphere of both and both have offered me generous aid. So it comes down to which has better prospects for consulting and IB? I really need to decide on this soon and I'm having a hard time making my decision, so thanks for your help!

Do you know how much their major would have mattered in the recruiting process? That is what I am very worried about. I know that Cornell has better majors for IB and consulting (like AEM and Econ). That's whats really keeping me from picking Cornell.

Major doesn't matter? The thing is that I've been asking a lot of people and the answer has been split, but the people I asked were all students. I was wondering what people like you guys on WSO who are actually in the industry think since your opinions are probably worth more.

I went to Cornell and my friend majoring in Asia Studies landed in an EB. While ILR maybe isn't the absolute most ideal situation, the school has the brand name, alumni network, and quality education that allows anyone who thrives there to break into a broad range of careers. If you are able to pull a 3.8 at Cornell, or even Vandy for that matter it is a really solid school, they aren't going to kill you for your major. At least that's my opinion. I'm not in IB now but all of my internships during undergrad were, I was an engineering major.

Cornell does not have have hotter chicks that is a fact.

Let me posit this, what market are you from or where would you be comfortable moving to. If the answer is doesn't matter fine. But as an example I'm from NYC and I knew I only wanted to move back after school so I picked a school that has a good representation and alumni base in that market. So honestly if you are from the south pick Vandy if you are from the Northeast pick Cornell.

*But college is a once in a lifetime experience I bet the parties at Vandy and the tailgating is awesome.

Cornell and Vandy both have adequate social scenes. okay. we've got it out of our systems now.

Vanderbilt is, at best, a semi-target. Cornell is, at worst, a semi-target. you're in ILR, but you'll still have access to all the info sessions and networking events that AEM/other students have. you'll have access to a larger and more successful alumni network. you'll have better access to NYC firms. the Cornell name -- and the resources/network that come with it -- make this an easy choice.

Thanks! That really makes sense. As I have been saying to the other posters, I think I just have been talking to the wrong people (mostly other students). I've heard things like "Vandy will be wayyy easier to land an IB job from, forgot Cornell" and similar stuff.

No, sorry you're dead wrong on this. You can't even compare the two in this category.

Everything else you say makes 100% sense. Cornell is the best choice given his target city on NYC and it is better academically in general. *Especially in the NE and NYC.

i am an ILR Grad class of 2016. There are more ILR grads alone in my Bulge Bracket (top 6 bank) IB analyst class than kids from vanderbilt. (the exact number is 3 ilr grads and 2 vandy kids). Thats a fact. Plus vandy has terrible connects to NYC. I know vandy kids with better resumes on paper but theres just no avenue and they ended up at no name shops.

I go to Cornell, and I don't even like it. That being said, I can definitively tell you that you will get so much more from going to ILR than Vandy. Vandy is only really recognized as good in in the South, whereas Cornell University will help you out on a global scale.
