COVID plan of attack
All,
Some pretty smart people here so I wanted to run this by you. What if we completely isolate everyone, in apartments etc, close everything down until COVID goes away? I think it is the most effective strategy. If we are open there WILL be cases.
Worked in South Korea and New Zealand just fine...they’re living life as free as ever.
But nooo “mAsK WeArIng aNd TeMPOrAry lOckDowNs iNfRinGeS oN mY CoNsTiTutiOnal RigHtzZZ”. Americans really do have worms for brains and that is why we’ll be the last country out of this shit
Lol at cherry picking two (effective) island nations and ignoring Europe and South America. US is much closer to these two places than fucking NZ.
The US could absolutely be as effective as the UK or Canada or Germany, which didn’t quite control it but did alright. it’s not just island nations that have gotten this under control, Vietnam, with 100 million people and a fraction of our spending on health and with much fewer resources, got this under control. There is no reason why Vietnam should be controlling this better than the US, on paper we should be much better equipped, but AMERICA IS A NATION OF SELFISH DUMBASSES and this is why we’re fucked

Exhibit A
Vietnam and Taiwan have entered the chat
Having a lock-down similar to the one that we have in the UK would make no impact at all
People misuse the sports-related hour and everyone meet together close by the river
If you're an intern in IB you really should know how to pull basic comps come on now.
Not even broaching the fact SK & NZ are literal islands, it requires exponentially more complex logistics to maintain a population the size of the US spread out over such a vast space with access to goods (food & supplies) and medical care. Next take into account the critical nature of the US to the world economy vs that of the other two. South Korea is moderately relevant at a global scale due to their presence in electronics, but New Zealand? The entire country could be wiped off the face of the earth (not that I'd ever want that to happen, I love kiwis) and the rest of the world economy wouldn't blink. Now if the US gets shut down for a long period of time? Pandemonium would erupt. Your argument is the textbook definition of false equivalency.
Whether you like it or not, the US does have a constitution and it's citizens have rights. The government lacks the authority to enforce things like a mask mandate and according to several state supreme courts, lockdowns. Just because you're in college and have the luxury to sit around inside all day doesn't mean the rest of the country is in the same position. Saying that people who can't do that are purely idiots just shows how woefully ignorant you are about how the real world works.
Very well said. This is what I wish people understood.
This is really well said. What you said really hit true to me a while back when I took a ferry to nj to see a buddy and I overheard a bunch of guys who were each small biz owners / sole proprietors who were chatting about how truly fucked they'd been as a result of government restrictions. Now I don't think being able to participate in the economy would preclude one from wearing a mask but straight up having your earnings run to zero is something a lot of us with jobs who complain about Zoom meetings and remote working couldn't hope to relate to.
Felt a new wave of empathy for the folks who had their lives absolutely gutted as a result of prohibitive restrictions by a government which in theory should be supporting them. I'm not providing an answer or a solution to any of this but I wanted to say that your last paragraph should hold a lot more weight with those on a moral pedestal than current state.
Biology will win
We should emulate North Korea and shoot people who test positive
Let's put aside the sheer impossibility of realistically enforcing a "complete" lockdown of all people to prevent the spread. There's this thing called a global supply chain that would come to a grinding halt and likely result in more deaths than the actual virus will if we just continue going about our lives while taking reasonable precautions. There are people who need medical care (both critical and maintenance) and non-COVID emergencies that take place no matter what's happening. The entire world population's needs continue to move along regardless of COVID. Then realize that COVID has a 99%+ survival rate for anyone under say 65, and even for people over that age it's ~90-95% (depending on where you're pulling stats).
This is going to sound heartless, but it's also realistic. We'll focus on the 65+ population since they're the most at risk and there are ~600mm people globally who fall into that category (less than 10% of the global population). Now even if ALL of the 65+ people caught it (highly unlikely, because they're the most likely to quarantine themselves during all this), and we'll go with the worse case 90% survival rate so ~60mm dead give or take (~0.8% of the global population). These people in terms of current economic impact are typically more consumption-oriented than contributory towards output because they're past their prime in terms of ability to work. Now realize the UN estimates that the average life expectancy globally is ~73...
What sense does it make to knee cap the world economy for 60m people when on average they'll die in the next 8 or less years anyway? And even with the lockdown, not having access to medical care in case of emergency would probably result in a number of these people (since they most often have other co-morbidities) still dying. Meanwhile, the rest of the global population would have to pull itself out of the massive hole economic hole it fell into in order to sustain a complete lockdown. Seems like a pretty poorly thought-through and near-sighted attempt to save the lives of a few and decimate the lives of the remainder for who knows how long into the future.
Then you can bring in the ethics argument of who the fuck are you to tell other people they're not allowed to work/go about their lives if they're willing (or simply have no choice otherwise) to bear the risk to themselves and their family members. If you're worried about yourself or your family, then you stay home and figure out how to make it work. None of this is a fun pill to swallow, but it's reality.
This is OP and thanks for the great responses. The thread was facetious - its mind blowing that people aren’t able to understand some of the concepts you’re talking about.
It's honestly not that surprising when you realize the majority of people are uneducated sheep that hang on to every word politicians spew about following instructions for the "greater good" while they simultaneously ignore the very instructions they're expecting everyone else to follow (Pelosi, Cuomo, Newsom, Lightfoot, etc).
I am going to assume that the OP is being sarcastic. Lockdowns have worked well in certain countries but I think it would be very difficult to lock down the Unites States. With that said, we should have a mask mandate across the United States. Will a mask mandate eliminate the virus? No, but a mask mandate would slow spread of the virus and buy us some time until a vaccine can be broadly distributed. Does the federal government have the authority to require a mask mandate? I believe the federal government has a compelling interest in slowing the spread of the virus. At the very least, the federal government has the authority to mandate masks when going across state lines, as it is has the authority over any interstate activity. It is not such a hardship to wear a fucking mask. The following document details how various branches of the federal government have the authority to require masks.
https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/LSB/LSB10530
We don’t necessarily need masks if everything is closed. It’s the only way to stop the spread.
What the heck are you on about? Lockdowns have not worked anywhere, Europe is having a resurgence almost identical to the US's. Even New Zealand started having cases again and they're arguably the easiest place to prevent spread to aside from a closed port Madagascar. WHO has even come out and said lockdowns should be a last resort because of the economic and social damage they cause. They would've been effective at the very start (we're talking travel ban when it first showed in China + lockdown to kill off early cases) when there were limited contact points and before there was mass seeding of the virus across the country, but that cat's out of the bag so lockdowns are just an utterly horrible decision now. It has been categorically proven at this point that no one can "stop" the virus with lockdowns. Masking I agree isn't that big a deal, but that's up to private business/individual discretion until or unless the Feds decide to try and force it, which I'd bet won't go over well with a large portion of the country.
I am not calling for a lockdown but I would like to see a mask mandate. I realize that people from certain parts of this country would resist. Some of them would say "my body, my choice" like that wacko from Georgia. I do not want people from these states coming to my state unless they wear a mask. The federal government has a right to restrict people from spreading the virus across state lines. If everyone in Oklahoma wants go maskless, they should only do it in their state.
Why dont we just pass criminal mask/face shield laws which begin with escalating fines before they turn into felonies with prison time? Then you dont have to shut anything down. Let the fines go to local/state govts and you will help solve their budget issues.
Do you want violent armed rebellion? Because that's how you get violent armed rebellion.
An alternative would be for the federal government to withhold funding for states that do not enforce mask laws.
Yeah there are cities and states in the US that issue fines that don’t have violent rebellion.
I think I saw where you were bringing politics into this. I voted Trump in 2016, abstained to vote this year out of disgust over covid’s handling. Trump can’t win any brownie points from handling this with his base so he’s just going to let a ton of people die.
A few armed extremists being gunned down is better than hundreds of thousands of innocents. Easy math.
People are still seriously hoping the US does strict lockdowns?..
Was Italy not proof they are only effective for the short term?
You clearly haven't being paying attention to OP's recent comments on other threads.
