Is there any way to eliminate the deficit other than income tax (higher tax rate) or goods/service tax?
Can you eliminate the deficit by growth, whereby more tax revenue comes in without the added spending (this is what Bush seems to advcocate). This would allow much needed spending to pay down the current fiscal year deficit and also the long term debt.
Hope this is not deviating from your original post and its intentions.
I don't trust the politicians to not spend, the short-termism of public office advocates short term spending for political gain. Winning on a 'pay down the national debt' may not have the short term spectacularism necessary to gain serious traction.
