Favorite Types of Music for Different Situations

Good morning Vietnam,

I rarely see music discussed on this website, and as a person who listens to music almost every time I am not in class, with friends, etc. I am always looking for new music.

I could go on for about 3 hours about all the artists I listen to, but I will keep it brief.

Lifting weights: Drake/Kanye/Kendrick Lamar/NWA/Eminem

Studying/Working: Focus@Will/Classical Music

Running: Blink 182/John Mayer/All Time Low (lame I know but good for quick miles as its upbeat)

Chill mode: John Mayer/Dave Matthews/Willie Nelson/Rat Pack.

Fall Asleep to: Podcasts like Clay Travis, the WSO podcast, and Colin Cowherd

Alright boys & girls what music do you listen to in these situations?

Why not, I always like discussing music.

Lifting weights: Whatever, honestly -- it doesn't really affect my lifting. Lately, it's been Jeff Rosenstock, Unwound, Daughters.

Studying/Working: Minimalist/Electronic/Glitch. Some of my favorites are Autreche, Biosphere, Tim Hecker.

Running: I don't run.

Chill mode: Lots of shoegaze/Car Seat Headrest/Angel Olsen.

Fall Asleep to: Don't really listen to music here, but The Dismemberment Plan/Sweet Trip/My Bloody Valentine when I do.

"Wu_Tang Financial" No music while running? I know serious runners don't like it as it ruins pace

Says no one.

My focused run playlist hits each time I strike my foot at 190 bpm. The music helps to hit the cadence, which affects speed.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

Lifting: Travis Scott/Future/Migos Studying/Working: No music when studying. Schoolwork however I'll pull up a YouTube playlist that has low volume melodic beats (don't know how else to phrase it----look up:

.) Chill mode: Country/Classic rock/Jimmy Buffet/ anything you'd listen to on a beach Running: Five Finger Deathpunch/Breaking Benjamin type music, or music like ACDC/Aerosmith... Fall Asleep: Nothing

Porkchops don't sound too good for dinner, see you on the 9th green at 9. I can turn 10k into 1.27 million in fifteen months. Match play is for people who can't play consistent golf. ;)

Typically I listen to his live albums while running. Sample songs include "I dont need no doctor" "Everyday I have the blues" and some of his album songs "Roll it on home" provide a very nice soothing song to run to. An important note here may be that I play drums and guitar, so I focus heavily on either of those instruments while running which seems to take my mind off of the fact that my legs hurt and I am breathing pretty deeply.

I listen to a lot of different stuff from garage rock to psychedelic to sludge, grind, and black metal

Lifting weights: Grind or Sludge: bands like Full of Hell, Dead in the Dirt, Eyehategod, Graves at Sea, Weedeater, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed's new album. I'll also listen to some garage rock or hardcore while working out too.

Studying/Working: instrumental stuff, ambient electronic music, or lighter psych: Forest Swords, Godspeed you black emperor, Holy Wave, Earthless

Running: modern hardcore or longer doom/stoner songs: Turnstile, Weekend Nachos, The Heavy Eyes, All Them Witches, True Widow

Chill mode: Psych or indie: The Growlers, Allah-Las, Holy wave, Mac Demarco, Brian Jonestown Massacre

Fall Asleep to: Silence.

Driving: Garage rock or psychedelic like Parquet Courts, Metz, The Men, The growlers, allah-las. Also Altar of Plagues.

Just spent 4 days at Coachella so....pretty much whatever gives me rollbacks

Compensation is not commensurate with education.

11PM - 3AM @ office : Rap about the come-up

3AM-4AM @ office, car ride home: Rap about ballin'

When my colleagues piss me off: Thrash metal, really anything groove metal/contemporary American.

When I need to focus: Classical. Vivaldi. Little Fugue. Sometimes straight up white noise.

Exercise: House/Drum n' Bass, and keep that shit melodic.

On my balcony when it's sunny: 90's-00's era pop rock, chill hip hop (think summertime/atmosphere)

On my balcony when it's rainy: Jazz. Miles Davis, Errol Garner, gerry mulligan

With a woman: More jazz. More upbeat. Bossa nova.

When I want to feel like it's the wild west out here and I'm a fucking cowboy: When the Levee Breaks, by zep.

"Wu_Tang Financial"Alright boys & girls what music do you listen to in these situations?

Great thread. Despite what my avatar may suggest, I'm not pumping AIC 24/7 (although since I grew up in Seattle in the 90's, you will never convince me that grunge is over).

Lifting: Lots of early-2000s butt rock. Disturbed, Breaking Benjamin, early Linkin Park. Occasionally veer into Avenged Sevenfold for some much-needed metal.

Working: Anything without words. Cinematic soundtracks, classical piano, deep house. Spotify's chill.out.brain is a good place to start, as is the Tron soundtrack.

Running: I assume I'd be listening to the screams of the approaching zombie hordes, because that's the only way you're getting me to go running.

Chill: Acoustic background. Especially country. Spotify again for the win.

Driving: Rock. Foo fighters, AIC, early Pearl Jam, QOTSA. lostprophets and Anberlin if you're reaching for deep tracks.

Wild Card: Carrie Underwood is an angel sent from heaven and I am liable to put her on in any circumstance without warning. I can live with the consequences of my actions.

"Son, life is hard. But it's harder if you're stupid." - my dad

Phil Collins. I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke.

Cheer up, Bateman. What's the matter? No shiatsu this morning?

Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock.

Sabrina! Don't just stare at it, eat it!

GoldenCinderblock: "I keep spending all my money on exotic fish so my armor sucks. Is it possible to romance multiple females? I got with the blue chick so far but I am also interested in the electronic chick and the face mask chick."

Working out:- Industrial music, Modern military music, rap, Kanye, Steve Aoki (check out Lit)

Getting laid the first time with a chick:- I have a default playlist set to begin with "In Too Deep", followed by "Sussudio", and then "In the Air Tonight". If she doesn't chuckle after that, she doesn't get called a second time.

Getting laid other than first time:- Whatever floats her goat, except rap. I usually don't bang ebony. Also, I prefer chicks who like Ricky Martin or Latin American music during sex - Ricardo Montaner tops that list.

Driving/Walking/Office Late Nights:- Remember the Name (listen to this before interviews), Fort Minor, Linkin Park, Maroon 5, Theo London, Jay Z, Older hip-hop/rap (Tupac/Icecube/Snoop), NFS Most Wanted (the first one's) playlist [which includes Avenged Sevenfold, Styles of Beyond and Celldweller]

Destressing/Reading:- Classical Music, Sinatra, Yanni (I would much rather play this on synth), Miles Davis, John Legend, Coldplay

Fall Asleep to:- Victor Cheng (especially love the cases in which he plays both roles, since hearing his voice on repeat for long is just too boring - something that stayed from interview days), also recent addition, the WSO podcast

Wake-up Alarm:- Chop Suey

EDIT:- I also listen to Buddhist chanting and Mongolian Throat Music from time to time. Now guys from my office might know who I am :)

GoldenCinderblock: "I keep spending all my money on exotic fish so my armor sucks. Is it possible to romance multiple females? I got with the blue chick so far but I am also interested in the electronic chick and the face mask chick."

Lifting Weights: early Metallica Podcasts: Masters in Business, Money Talks All other situations: Widespread Panic, moe, Trampled By Turtles, Yonder Mountain String Band, Umphrey's McGee, Grateful Dead

"That was basically college for me, just ya know, fuckin' tourin' with Widespread Panic over the USA."

Fucking Trampled? Any white iron band? I was Shit canned in Duluth after a WIB show at trampled' house and dropped their bassist's stand up on the floor after jamming on it. I have seen them a few times. He was really cool about it. Ended up blacking out. I used to work with Dave doing landscaping and construction, nice guy. Those were good days.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

Thomas Pynchon I actually just got into Chris Robinson Brotherhood and I'm seeing them in Charlottesville for my birthday this summer.

Ehmerica Haven't listened to too much WIB recently. Was this back when Trampled was still starting out in Duluth? I saw them at Red Rocks last year (also on my birthday) and they were fucking awesome. I'm going to miss being able to go to rad shows after business school...

"That was basically college for me, just ya know, fuckin' tourin' with Widespread Panic over the USA."

When I'm stuck in a model for a while, I usually find some sort of progressive or deep house mix on YouTube to listen to.

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it." - George Bernard Shaw

These days driving I listen to suffocation, the allman brothers, charlie Daniels band, Grateful Dead, Joe satriani, Beethoven, ac/D.C., of monsters and men, sepultura, SRV, blind melon, slayer, Leo Kottke, death, rush, johnny winter, Iron Maiden, yngwie malmsteen, Floyd and pantera.

When drinking machine head, Metallica, panthera, crotchduster, rush, Gypsy kings, Jesse cook, ac/D.C and heidevolk.

At work I listen to Melissa Lee not shutting up.

Doing yard work I listen to death and a little Judas priest.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.

Lifting weights: Everything From 80's thrash and hair metal, to Jay Z, Kanye, Biggie, Rick Ross, and some good ole Country to make me feel like I am back in my cleats and shoulder pads.

Studying/Working: Same as above

Running: Podcasts or Same as above

Driving: Podcasts or Same as above

Chill mode: Rat Pack AF!!!... but seriously I listen to a grab bag of music

Fall Asleep to: silence

Lifting: Gangsta rap - nothing more relevant to a middle-class white male than raps about ghetto life. Studying/Working: Frank Sinatra/Soundtracks from epic series (Howard Shore, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, etc.) Chill mode: I have two playlists, chill RnB and chill house music - it depends on the situation. Running: Deep House Commute: Audible/Podcasts (Depending on the mood and what book I am into) Any situation: Arctic Monkeys (First three albums), RHCP, Nirvana, Metallica, etc.

'I'm jacked... JACKED TO THE TITS!!'

Lifting weights: Hardstyle, usually Hardwell

Studying/Working: Hip-hop instrumentals

Chill mode: House music

Fall Asleep to: Rap/Hip-hop

I'm a little over-saturated with Avicii because I've seen him live 3 times this year, but Levels is probs the sickest track. Kudos.

interesting post. music can improve your productivity and performance. here are some highlights from a related article:

"If your goal is to increase your concentration then music which has a constant, easy beat and light melodies are recommended. These are said to be good for those trying to study as they help you pace your reading to aid focus and memorising. Baroque music is reported as an excellent example, especially the works of Vivaldi, Bach and Handel.

Rock music can have a similar effect. According to a report in the journal Neuroscience of Behavior and Physiology, the Russian Academy of Sciences discovered that a person's ability to recognize visual images, including letters and numbers, is faster when either rock or classical music is playing in the background.

If you are aiming to be more productive through being more relaxed, then you may be interested to learn that research has shown that music with an upbeat rhythm can reduce stress hormone levels by as much as 41%."

Music is my vice. I cant get shit done when I am listening to a good song. Usually because I then go to Youtube and see if there is a video for the song, look up lyrics, read band bios, check tour dates, pick up the guitar and learn the song by ear which takes awhile, etc.

Anyways, currently I am supporting two NYC bands: MGMT and Vampire Weekend.

Romantic, more Cavalieri than Palestrina. The Council of Trent did not prohibit such polyphony, thank Christ.

Those who can, do. Those who can't, post threads about how to do it on WSO.

These were impressive. Mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=58mYRYVz0VM Most people consider it incredibly cliche; I consider it the story of my life. I'm completely blessed to be where I am today with the opportunities I have consider the things I've seen, lived through, and where I'm from.
Incredibly powerful memories from an experience I shared with a close group of people I won't ever forget. This song always reminds me and it's like I'm there again.
I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Bright side of the road- Van Morrison.

a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself.

Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

A very difficult question for me, as music has been a huge part of my life for years. My usual response is "Won't Get Fooled Again" by The Who, but alas, it seems Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Bruce Springsteen are snapping at their heels...

Iron Maiden - "Hallowed Be Thy Name" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AMvf0P08vA Metallica - "Master of Puppets"

Bruce Springsteen - "Human Touch" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85cNRQo1m3A

masterofpuppetsDo I have to say anything?

Metallica rules!

I'm not gonna turn this into an obnoxious thread, but Metallica isnt as good as Megadeth. I mean Dave wrote more of the songs on the first three albums and even Leper Messaih on Master of Puppets. I mean just listen to this...

Metallica is nice though, my favorite song is Ride the Lightning (Coincidentally written by Dave...lol)
