Following Up Intern
So I recently met with the CEO of a large asset manager in his offices in NYC. I am 19 and I think he ended up liking me since he spent 1.5 hrs with me and talked in depth about his firms philosophy. I think I made it clear that I want to intern there since I left my resume but I did not say it specifically. He actually asked me what I am doing this summer and said he wants to have interns committed by next month. It has been a week since and I have not heard anything back. Do I follow up with head of HR? Really trying to lock this down but don't want to seem too pushy. Thanks!
Call and ask to speak to his executive asst. (secretary). Explain the situation to her, state that you are interested in an internship, you think that's what the CEO had in mind for you, and ask her for guidance on how to proceed. She will either ask him what to do with you, or refer you to whoever handles intern recruiting, with a "CEO interest" flag.
I already spoke with her when I was there during the visit - she is who I left the resume with. I reached out over email to her thanking her for her time and wishing a happy holidays to the whole firm. Any advice on where to go from here?
Keep following up with her at about 2-week intervals. Be polite but persistent. A big part of her job is to keep people like you from taking up her boss's time. However, another big part of her job is making sure her boss's commitments and tasking are followed up. Unless leading intern prospects on and then ghosting them is the CEO's regular practice (quite possible), she will eventually hand you off to somebody else in the company, if only to stop you emailing her, or possibly end-running her to complain back to the CEO that your intern application died in her in-box.
Getting cooperation from admin people in the C-suite is a great skill to practice and master in your early career.
Thank you for this!
