Help! Balding in college.

Title says it all. I see a little thinning in my frontal scalp area. I'd like to prevent this before it becomes more noticeable. Any tips on how to deal with this? Are there any "natural" treatments for balding like coconut oil or an egg hair mask? I prefer not to start using rogaine or finasteride in college. Help much appreciated.

Finasteride. If you care for your hair, which it sounds like you do, don't give in to the "just shave it" crowd. It's a loser, defeatist mindset and you need to keep in mind they never tackled the issue early enough and resent others who want to do so.

EDIT: Ah, yes, the monkey-shits. Let me guess, are you all also going to tell me appearance doesn't matter especially in all these client-facing jobs and overall well-being? Fuck off.

OP here. I agree with this. I'm sure some men still look great if they shave their head, but I think a head with hair almost always looks better than a bald head. Sure, the Rock, Jason Statham, and Johnny Sins are all attractive men, but imagine if they had hair! They would look 10x better.

Doesn't Finasteride mess with my hormones though? What do you think of rogaine?

It does but let me give you a different angle here. Drinking alcohol messes with your hormones, not sleeping enough, not exercising enough, not being under the sun enough.

It's not ideal to ever mess with hormones, but the differences you will "feel" are extremely negligible as opposed to having your life in order like the things I mentioned above. It's a give & take situation you know? Rogaine is good, I would try it out and assess your progress along the way.

Definitely go through a doctor to get it though if you decide to use Finasteride, don't use those online services.

Look, this definitely isn't a great thing to have to deal with but you have options. I'd recommend starting with rogaine or finasteride now, because they are more effective the earlier your start using them. Hopefully that gives you several years but, depending on how quickly and extensive the hair loss is, you may have to look into transplants or some type of treatment through an actual doctor. Hair transplants and work from doctors is pretty good these days, but it will be expensive and something you'll have to maintain for a while. This is where you have to determine how important your hair is to you; do you spend the money or do you just shave it and move on? I think either is fine, but you have to own whatever choice you go with. I've got plenty of friends who shaved it and they own it; also know someone that went the transplants route, didn't maintain it well and it looks hideous now.

Starting balding at 20. Went on the big three (finasteride, rogaine, and some shampoo (forgot the name, you can google the big 3)) and my hair made a u turn. You need to take at least rogaine and finasteride together, taking rogaine alone won’t do much as you aren’t slowing down hair loss. Please like always first consult with your doctor and listen to your body for any possible side effects.

Have any of you noticed issues with finasteride?

I got a pretty good recession in the works. Have for a few years. Been using Rogaine consistently for about 2 years. To be honest don't think it helps much, but it does say that its more for top of head and not receding hairline.

Honestly, I'm terrified of the side effects of Finasteride but have never talked to anyone but dermatologists about it. Had (2) dermatolgists recommend it and brushed off my concerns about the side effects and (2) say they are indeed very serious and have had patients with very long term issues. A few google searches about "post finasteride syndrome" will show you exactly what I'm talking about

Don't mean to fear monger but I'm curious since some of you have actually taken it for what appears to be an extended period

I've got a mature hairline, also in college. so not balding in any noticeable way but saw my dad and grandfather and got scared. spent way too much time figuring out what to do. there is a simple, easy answer: finasteride. we're blessed to live in an age when it's so easily accessible and effective. just get a prescription, start popping it every one or two days (depending on the dosage you're given). give it a little time, i was so scared i think i just made myself feel dizzy when i took it for the first week. it went away, and i take it every other day and never worry about my hair. get it somehow (dermatologist, keeps, hims), take it, and forget about it.

Just because you’ve noticed thinning in your frontal area doesn’t necessarily mean it’s over yet. Personally I’ve noticed my frontal area thin since 18 (now 20) but I haven’t lost any more hair. That said I’ve made substantial changes in my sleep patterns, diet, and stress although I’m not certain if that has saved my hair or it is only coincidental.

There are various things you could try but I think it may be an uphill battle if you have bad genes.  You could try switching shampoos and use one that is natural. If you use gel in your hair, buy a shampoo that strips away the gel.  I recently started using Dr. Bronner's Castile Soap.  You can actually use this soap for almost anything.  Harsh products are bad for your hair.  You can also try using some biotin, as it is supposed to be good for the hair.

Before you jump and go on rogaine, understand that:

1. It's a DAILY process

2. For the first few months, you will lose MORE hair than you already are now, as your follicles are pushing out the limp hair and growing new, stronger follicles

3. If you ever decide to stop taking it, within less than a month you will lose ALL of the progress you made. Yes, even if you were on it for 20+ years, it will only take a few weeks for all that progress to fall out.

I took a pretty expensive route and I do PRP injections into my scalp every 3 months. My gf and barber have said they noticed some growth, but I feel like I haven't noticed much since my hair is still falling, but we lose 100 hairs a day so it may be me just overthinking it. I've only done the initial 4 injections, so I'll be doing another 4 for the next year and will see if it's still worth it.

I noticed my hair thinning around my temples in college and more hair falling out while brushing/styling my hair. I began taking biotin supplements and using a more natural hair loss tonic called evolis. After about 3 months, my hair was very noticeably thicker in the areas it was thinning. I also now stay away from brushes and only use a wide-tooth comb because I didn't like brushes pulling on my hair and somewhat straightening it out (my hair is very fine so I noticed it straightening when using a brush repeatedly). I noticed hair regrowth/thickening for probably the first 6 months, but then plateaued afterwards. I continue doing these every day for preventing/slowing hairloss and I now experience far fewer hairs falling out, if any, while styling.

These tips are definitely not miracle workers, but might be a good place to start when catching hair loss early. Hope this helps.

Get. on. finasteride. today.

I have multiple friends on it and it has saved their lives. No negative side effects. I've been fortunate enough to not start balding yet at the age of 28, but the day I do, I will be on it.

Use Rogaine (generic form is Minoxidil) before anything. You're young and after a few months it will stop the issues. Would steer clear of Finasteride before exhausting that option. Seriously, only those who started Rogaine/Minox too late have bad things to say about it and will try to force you on some pills that will not have good long-term effects on your body after taking for over a decade. This is again with the caveat that you have caught this EARLY.

Dude, are serious??? What is a search engine for????

in all honesty just wait and when it becomes noticeable you can get a hair transplant if your balding doesn't look good. Only say that because a lot of people confuse balding with a receding hairline which is normal in guys. I would not sweat it my hairline receded in college on the sides back a few inches and stopped , if it goes further i should be nearly 30 by that time as I am 26 now so I would just get a hair transplant. They look great now of days if you can get a good one.
