How to avoid eyes hurting after staring at a computer all day?
Incoming IB analyst, would like to know how you guys manage this. Are there special glasses you can buy solely for this purpose? Any other tips? I can sit still all day, but my eyes start to hurt. Thanks!
Had the same issue last summer. Also interested as I prepare for FT.
Just get up and take a lap every hour or so
Check out Gunnars Crystalline Lenses. I think they started out as being glasses that gamers wear to prevent eye strain, but they just launched a style that looks similar to prescription glasses. I wear them everyday and I can definitely notice less eyestrain as the lenses filter out the harmful blue light that monitors produce. The link is below.

Take fish oil capsule twice a day and take regular breaks. You should also get an app called "Stand Up!" which reminds you to get up through notifications. I usually get up every 45-60 minutes to get water/coffee/tea or just use a restroom.
Blink every now and again while taking extreme caution not to let out a wink. The latter may come across as sexual frustration.
I've had that issue in a previous job. The Gunnar glasses work fairly well. Another thing you can do is to visit an optometrist and them to prescribe you a pair of polarized lenses with a slight positive correction. Positive contacts work better(as they cover your entire field of vision) but are less convenient. Both force your eyes to focus at a further distance than they normally would during computer use, which effectively counteracts the strain caused by focusing at a close distance for extended periods of time.
In order to mitigate the effects of the bright screen the first thing to do is to dim your screen as much as possible. You can also find either software based solutions or physical screen covers that will reduce color distortion and mitigate the effects of the brightness.
I recently went to an eye doctor about this and they told me about special lenses that they can put on any glasses that reflect off the bad lights that come out of the computer screen. But after hearing about the Gunnar glasses I may get those instead.
Awesome advice - thanks everyone,I will definitely check out those Gunnars glasses Romy

FWIW also came across this indiegogo campaign while researching this, seems similar to the Gunnars glasses, but maybe just w different designs
"Getting up" doesn't necessarily mean you stop working. Even standing up, stretching, and taking a look around the room or a walk to the water cooler can do a huge amount.
You blink 1/3 less often while working at your computer, which can cause eye strain. Stay hydrated and take frequent breaks following the 20/20/20 rule, every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. It has to be 20 seconds (nothing less) for the same reason 6 minute abs is not as effective as 7 minute abs. 7s the key number there. 7-elevens. 7 dwarves
Definitely this.
Plus, 7 is synonymous with 7-Eleven. 7/11 = 0.636363 Take out the 3's, because we all know 3 is the lucky number. You're left with 0.666. Drop the zero because no one likes being a failure and the period because that's what girls get when you have a vagina. You essentially have 666 = devil = illuminati = eyestrain.
If the above logic doesn't work, drink plenty of water which will cause you to piss every hour.
Shit, your logic can't be beat I'll take whatever you're selling!
Didn't you ever play video games growing up and laugh at the "every hour, take a minute break and look away from the screen" warnings as you skip past them? Do that. It actually works.
Computer glasses. Went to the optometrist for the same thing. They made minor corrections with a prescription and I got the computer glasses that reduce glare from the screen. So far so good.
It will pass and your eyes get used to it after a few weeks.
Hey guys, I have a great suggestion to help all of you out. Those gunnars glasses are pretty pricey just for this use, but what I found a couple of years back is this program called "f.lux," which essentially does the same thing as these glasses. At sunset, it'll dim your screen and turn it into an orange kind of color, and it's really easy on your eyes.
Here's a link if you wanna try it out: https://justgetflux.com/
Just gonna quote my old post for people who may not have seen it, this program is REALLY helpful. It does wonders for your eyes.
Take a break every couple of hours. There are spectacles with reflective properties that help reduce eye-strain. You can also set your screen's refresh rate to above 60Hz, preferably 75Hz. Anything above 60Hz should greatly reduce flickering and, consequently, the probability of eye-strain and/or headaches. If, at the native resolution your screen won't support a higher refresh rate, try lowering the resolution and try again.
In addition to using the flux app, which I highly recommend, you can change the default window color for your applications (e.g. Excel, Word) to something other than white that is easy on the eyes. I use this RGB setting: 195, 200, 196. Sets a background of a cool, greenish grey color. MUCH easier on your eyes.
I set word and excel to the black / sliver backround. Same thing with Gmail and Chrome. It helps my eyes a lot.
Went to an eye doctor for this when I started FT. Got a prescription for computer lenses which is essentially a reading perscription. The issue is exacerbated if you constantly look up at your screen and then down at a physical piece of paper, and then back and forth again as your eyes need to refocus. Definitely minimize this if possible. Taking a walk around surely helps and you will get used to it over time as well. I ended up never purchasing the computer screen glasses even with the prescription. There is no quick fix as my optometrist explained the distance we normally operate from a computer screen neither fits in the short-sightedness range (reading) or long-sightedness.
Turn down the brightness on the monitor, you just want it one step past the 'squint to read' level
Hey guys!
I know this thread is currently inactive but for anyone still looking for a cheap/attractive solution check out Felix Gray. It's basically fashionable eyewear that filters out computer glare and blue light for people who work in tech and finance (so primarily those who work 8+ hours a day in front of a computer screen.) It was started by 2 guys (one worked for a hedge fund and the other for a VC) who felt the same way as you. They're far cheaper than other products and way better looking according to me.
Standard eye drops work wonders
Or you can go on Amazon and order a pair of computer glasses for 15 bucks
