It's so easy to get into HYPSM

My brother just got into all of the HYPSM schools for Early Action he applied to, except MIT because he didn't have test scores.

He practically jerked off or smoked weed during his times in high school, but still got a GPA of 3.87 because of atrocious grade inflation. He took 4 AP classes and got a 4 or 5 on all of them because he took the tests online and printed out half his textbook and stapled them to the side of his computer while writing the test.

My parents hired a private admissions tutor in his junior year for a few grands, they fabricated a nonprofit for him to "find", some sports competitions that doesn't exist for him to "win" and some passion projects/internships for him to "undertake". In addition, they also helped him write his essays after asking him some questions.

He also said he was Latino and LGBTQ+ on the application form, despite being 100% Swedish and straight as a ruler. When he went to interview, he dyed his hair darker, wore some more "feminine" attire and jewlery and forced a Spanish accent/lilt in his speech.

He also tried applying to Cambridge (you can only apply to either Oxford or Cambridge) for Physics, had to take a Physics Aptitude Test that he was confident he would ace, found out the test covered basically only 2nd year undergraduate and above physics content, scored a 39% (when the average was 56%) and promptly got a rejection letter 3 weeks later without even getting to the interview stage.

I'm just highlighting how UK universities do a much better job at selecting the brightest minds of each generation, while the US attracts the bullshitter, athletes and borderline sociopaths. There's a reason why something like 88% of UK prime ministers went to Oxbridge, while something like 12% of US presidents went to HYPSM.

End of talk.

HYPSM schools have "restrictive" early action programs; you can only apply to one of them. I know because I attend one of them.

Also, decisions haven't come out yet.

To add on,  the Physics Aptitude Test for Oxford is designed to be roughly equivalent to A Level standards, not upper-level University.

Also, the population of the USA is 5x that of the UK. The total number of undergrads at HYPSM is lesser than the total number of undergrads at Oxbridge. And of course, Ilet's not pretend being elected President is about how good you are at Physics or Math.

I hope you know that A-levels are essentially APs on steroids.

Being the founder/CEO of a large corporation is not testament to quantitative ability, yet the likes of Elon Musk (business undergrad) only add to their respective schools' reputation. Producing a ludicrous number of heads of states has the same effect as producing a ludicrous number of c-suite executives.

This was last year, hence the online AP tests.

“My brother just got into all of the HYPSM”

You said it just happened. If it was last year - why didn’t you just say last year? You keep changing your story.

Not only that, but MIT is test optional this year, so his "brother" not applying because he didn't have test scores doesn't even make sense. Literally three dead giveaways that this post is fake and all you have to do is read the first sentence. 0/10 troll, this guy's gotta do better.

This is clearly BottomBucketHardo's 3rd account. Stop getting trolled.

Yeah, he oddly makes a lot of brit-specific references through all his posts so you can tell.

2 sides to this. If you're wealthy/well off then yes, HYPSM probably is easier for you. Much more of the application can be gamed after all compared to Oxbridge applications (which can definitely still be gamed with private tutors/consultants)

The reality is, a lot of US kids mess up oxbridge because they are unfamiliar with the application process; oxbridge don't care about extracurriculars but expect you to know your school subjects inside out, read around them alot and be able to demonstrate lateral thinking. Alot of US students won't be well informed about the interview process. I go to Oxbridge and everyone here who applied to HYP got rejected because, again, we're trained to prepare for the UK admissions system. HYPSM is also (artificially) more competitive by the raw numbers so the aspect of sheer luck is greater with those apps.

If you're a relatively poor or lazy student who really loves one academic subject and has 0 extracurriculars but read around your desired course a lot then Oxbridge is clearly easier to pursue. At that point an iron-clad wall is erected between you and HYPSM, whereas one can always study themselves into Oxbridge or alternatively, UCL/LSE/Warwick/whatever the fuck T5/10 UK school.

Not exactly true, most applicants to Oxbridge have related extracurriculars regarding whatever course they're applying to. While it's not a requirement to have related extracurriculars, you can see your odds against kids who have done extracurriculars around their courses, who can also talk about them during interviews and in their Personal Statement.

Oxbridge isn't as easy to get into as people from the US think, just because their published offer rates are higher. There's heavy self-selection (kids faking interest in a subject like compsci/electrical engineering in the US don't want to be pigeonholed for 3 years studying exclusively their subject, in addition to knowing they'll get a subpar GPA without filler "liberal arts" courses to pad their CGPA.

Plus Oxbridge automatically rejects applicants without something like half a dozen 5s on AP tests, so they're not included in the "acceptance rate".

Lmfao how did this get so many SBs? Are people really this gullible?

We all complained about some high schoolers making low effort posts, but with this post here my friends, I think we have reached middle school status.

Lol and 20 british prime ministers went to the same secondary/high school. That doesn't mean it selects better students its just nepotism. Oxbridge have gotten a lot better now with trying to increase social mobility but it didn't used to be nearly all private school students. I would say in 20 years there will be a lot more non oxbridge politicians since there's so much nepotism in uk politics. How is the state school kid supposed to perform better in his oxbridge interview for ppe when the kid from boarding school has been practically given every single possible interview question.

Also at UK universities you apply for the course not just the university and oxbridge is filled with kids from private schools doing courses like classics and history (which most prime ministers did) where its far easier to get in compared to maths or hard sciences. People from state school are more likely to apply to maths or science courses. Saw a stat where like 90% of oxbridge comp sci students went to state school compared with like 10% classics students. You could definitely say that the average student at somewhere like imperial is smarter than the average oxbridge student because they only do maths and science degrees.

Classics or liberal arts degrees like history or philosophy might be easy and shit upon in the US with their liberal arts system, but liberal arts courses at Oxbridge are a different beast, and more difficult than the hard STEM courses like physics or computer science. It's true that 20 prime ministers went to Eton, hence why its the best private school in the world, above the shitters like Andover, Rosey or Exeter who let unconnected, middle or even lower class kids in on scholarships.

Yep bro classics at oxford with a 40% acceptance rate writing essays is definitely harder than imperial computer science with a 5% acceptance rate.

And Eton a school with 40k per year fees having 20 prime ministers is definitely causation not correlation...

I have a strong feeling this is the same "xxetherswag" guy from a few months ago who bragged about "fucking pornstars" and wanting to "see the end of the world." The writing style is quite similar; his username carries the same middle-school-Minecraft-esque flair; posts are the same lowbrow incendiary 4chan trash. Anyone else have a similar suspicion?

Um, nowhere in my comment did I mention "humor." And yes, your post--and your entire account for that matter (your previous account included)--is the very definition of "low brow," of trash one finds only in the comments of DailyMail.com, 4Chan, or Reddit. If you went to Oxbridge or an Ivy, you'd know the difference between lowbrow and highbrow texts. I do, and I could systematically dismantle and eviscerate your embarrassment of a post.

Enjoy your third tier state school and whatever accounting/back office role that has the misfortune of accepting someone as unlettered as yourself.

Although this post is trolling, it does carry a good deal of truth. I can confidently say that I am one of those bullshitters. I didn't explicitly lie, but university admissions in the United States rewards students that are able to exaggerate, frame, and position. Oh, a professor agreed to meet me on Zoom so I can ask him questions about my research? Okay, let me write on my resume "Personal meeting requested from Professor Name at [prestigious institution] to discuss my research." There are ways to kind of tell a story, without explicitly lying, that heavily benefits wealthier students with adults' guidance.
