Managing Directors or Baby Sitters?

We all know finance jobs are demanding and people constantly work long hours to slog through copious amounts of models and presentations. I didn't realize, however, that some MD's seem to think that they are also babysitters as well.

A first-year analyst in sales and trading at a major bank told Clusterstock that the head of his desk will call the office every night at 10 pm to check that he's still at the office working.
"He usually calls the associate, and I can hear him asking 'Is ****** still there?' to check that I'm working," the analyst told us.

Now, I didn't realize that S&T worked long hours like this. Personally, the desk here normally runs pretty usual hours with a few late nights every once in awhile (quarter end). I'm not railing against making sure people are working, i'm just suprised that this would be taking place at this point. It feels like your parents calling you everyday to make sure your going to your college classes. As a note, the firm I work for is a lot more laid back than most so I suppose that contributes to the difference in culture quite a bit.

Is my experience just an anomaly? Do your bosses really call in to make sure your working? Is getting your stuff done timely not enough anymore?

westsidewolf1989Had an associate that would come in at random points in the weekend to see who was there. He would literally do jack shit other than just sitting in his office. Additionally, he would leave super early during the week, and then come back around 5 hours later. No experience with S&T though.

so annoying. I had an associate that got fired pretty fast (~6 months) by "checking out" to go to the gym around 5pm...and wouldnt come back.

By the sound of it, the MD couldn't care less if the analyst is actually working, he just wants to make him/her miserable. What an asshole. I truly hope the MD gets ill and dies a long, slow and painful death. He deserves it.

damn, wishing death upon somebody after reading an extremely vague 2 sentence quote.

Well, I don't think there's much more to it. He checks up to see if his analyst is still working, making sure he stays sufficiently late enough to ensure he has a miserable life. And wishing the worst on someone like this? I don't see a problem, he deserves it.

What kind of S&T first year is working til 10 every single night?

I'm like one of them marriage counselors. Charge by the hour to tell some fool he needa bring some flowers home. Then charge another hour telling the bitch she oughta suck some cock every little once in a while. Keep a marriage strong like that. -Prop Joe

Plenty...the better question is why would the Associate still be there. First years can have significant after hours work that must be done on a daily basis which can explain why some desks would need first years to stay til 10-11pm many nights.

Uhm what desks are these so i can avoid them? lol. Also why isn't the day to day operational b/s handled by back office?

Or on the opposite side of the coin, what if the md is calling in just too see who's pulling late hours, not because he'll raise hell if they're not there, but to gain respect for his underlings working late... you guys are so negative.
