Money vs. preftige

Y’all,

What is your opinion on the utility of raw money vs. that of social clout? Listening to my MD bitch about how his retarded kid won’t be getting into any decent [middle] school is quite worrisome. When everyone has money to staple to the right-hand corners of their autistic spawnlings’ admissions packages, do parental lineages play that big of a role? Legacy gives a nice handicap, but what about when both parents are alumni vs. just one? If Papa Bear is $$$ but Mummy is an Albanian ex-nanny? If the parents are playing in the big leagues now but both went to non-targets? My mom is next-level useless but she did graduate from Barnyard. Did that actually play a role in the shaping of my future? Are you telling me my kid might not get the chance to be a lax star at HYP if I marry that bottle girl? What gives? You telling me I can’t just throw money at problems to make them go away?

Your argument is weak given the fact that you are commenting on a forum catering to people in finance coupled with the fact that many middle schoolers are still fumbling all over themselves to get an analyst position so they can buy montblanc pens and wear zegna shirts

commercial real estate, a-men?

That's not true. I know a guy who owns 15 sandwich shops (Jimmy Johns/ Jersey Mikes/ etc) and he nets over $500k annually from that. He also feeds it into real estate investments and generates even more from it. I'm not sure of his exact net worth but he is very comfortable.

I wouldn't imagine he's the guy people flock to at any networking events.

Ok so none of you actually read and considered my rant. Perhaps should have entitled this “does money suffice” but I digress. My question is if money alone can afford you an “elite” lifestyle or do you need prestige also?

Also, you can definitely have money without prestige. How is that even an argument

Depends on what you care about and what you want to do

You can have money and no prestige. New money people tend not to have prestige. But you can tell people with money and no prestige seem to be miserable pricks. I'm sure prestigious old money are miserable too, but they at least tend to have someone to share in their misery.

Someone like Bezos has a shit ton of money and doesn't fit into either category. It's weird because even though the guy is stupid rich, you almost could think of him as still trying to build his wealth, which is why he doesn't fit into either category.

I would say the best place to be in is rich but still building your wealth; not old prestigious money, but also not new money you don't know what to do with it.

If you actually spend time around the so-called "old money", you'd see that a lot of them don't really have much money to begin with and many are definitely not prestigious.

Look at how many modern Kennedys are just degenerate drug addicts with mental problems.
