I assume you do not or have never worked in, a F500. It's definitely not a pompous title. To me, it's the "entry-level" executive position. A VP may report to another VP (senior VP), to a regional president or directly to the C-suite. You can make director in certain major F500 companies based on exceptional track record, but you will never make VP at a major F500 without being able to be somewhat good at company politics and/or leadership, in addition to having a solid track record. At my company, certain VPs are more powerful than practically anyone bar the CEO.

 

Good caveat. At FAANG/Tech/newer industries, it's probably easier (?) to get to that level. However, at established corporations with a big employee base and decades of operation, even making it to director is not a walk in the park & the promotion cycle is significantly more drawn out than at newer/tech companies. VPs are usually worth their salt there
