Residence options near park ave in manhattan
Im going to JPM in manhattan this september and im looking for a decent place to stay (1br/studio).
Im looking at some safe options in midtown west (atelier, one mima, silver towers, orion) but i was wondering if the area near park ave and the circle would be better. It is certainly closer to where i'll be going to and coming back from everyday.
But i don't know of any specific options in that area and dont want to go in blindly. Whatever it is it must have a decent gym. A park view would be really really nice. I dont mind paying a little extra for something in return.
Any ideas?
it it's for the summer, I highly recommend the International House near Columbia. Be surrounded by awesome people, be in a great location, at a great price. It's the best party housing in town.
He says he's starting in September, so it's full-time.
in that case, I like Spanish Harlem. Good value, lots of flava
I said im joining JPM, not a street gang. And you think its funny, but someone could have taken your word for it and made a decision based on it.
People actually do live in Harlem now. It's not that bad and there are some sweet apartments.
I think he was only half-kidding.
Harlem is actually pretty okay now unless you're the bright-eyed type who doesn't know how to traverse NYC.
I have some buddies living in Harlem at the moment. 4 guys, all reasonably successful or in law school. The apartment is sweet and right near the subway. Neighborhood isn't quite there yet, but it isn't too bad.
Easy with the attitude there broseidon... It's also cute that you think that getting a 1 bedroom on park ave is a valid option... Unless you have roommates or come from money that area isn't feasible on a first year salary
1 BRs near park ave run, on average, close to $3,000. And joining an IBD is pretty similar to joining a street gang :p
Cost isn't an issue. I want to see if you guys have any suggestions for any specific spots near that area and how it compares with midtown west (convenience, availability of restaurants, ...etc).
Beside harlem, any suggestions?
If cost isn't an issue I would say live in West Village or SoHo loft right next to the subway line. Take the line into grand central then walk a couple blocks.
Copy.Paste
I am not a big fan of the area you described (one mima, atelier, etc). Those apartments are pretty far out there (10th, 11th ave). Personally, I don't like that area, it is very quiet, far away from just about everything and the stuff close by isn't great either (42nd st, no thanks).
If you want to be close to work I would recommend something more centrally located or on the UES (park ave as you described). I like the Columbus Circle area and the 56th-59th st in midtown area. Close to the park, convenient, although not as "hip" as west village, soho, etc.
wow, seems I let loose a fireball. I actually rather enjoyed Spanish Harlem - it has great restaurants which are quite affordable, some good local groceries and fish shops, borders Central Park, it seems safe to me (even the housing project there seem well maintained) and it really does have some good NYC and Latin flavour to it (music being played, shops, food). I am quite impressed to see people of all background getting along quite well there, and to me, that sort of diversity that makes NYC so great. So to me, I'd put it a premium on that neighborhood. But I also found the area all around the north of Central Park to be quite nice. Harlem was pretty cool too, with a slightly different vibe to it. Chinatown and Little Italy is also great (but pricier I think), but if money was no object, I could see myself in Little Italy. But then again, I only go there on weekends, and I don't know how active it is on the weekdays. I also liked the area around Baruch College, close to Credit Suisse's offices. It's a bit quiet for my tastes, but sometimes you have weekend fairs and such. And the Village is always good. Guess it depends what you're looking for in an NYC experience.
I can't think of a worse place to live than in any of the terrible "luxury" apartments in midtown west. Seriously.
If money isn't a real object, move to a cool neighborhood (West Village, Nolita, Soho, etc.).
Thanks guys for the inputs. Thats very helpful.
Downtown is much more fun than UWS / UES, unless you like dodging strollers on the street.
You give absolutely no color on who you are. How old are you? Rough amount you want to spend?
If I worked on the east side (assuming you'll be at 270 Park/383 Madison), I'd get a place in Union Square and take the 456, or in Nolita by Bleecker/Broadway/Lafayette and take the 6.
Gehry building (8 Spruce). The subway ride to work is 2 stops up the 4/5, and you're very accessible to the fun downtown neighborhoods but not IN them where you have to deal with noise all night, plus the building itself is wonderful.
And hey, since money is not an object, go for the $60k/month penthouse.
Im 28 and i can go up to $5k/mo or a little more if needed. And yes i'll be commuting to 277 park ave. i like to be where the food and fun is accessible but not where the noise is.
Do you recommend any specific spots/buildings? That would be very helpful.
I wouldn't say Union Sq is really "downtown". Although I guess that is in relevance to where you are.
While there's no strict definition... 14th and below is commonly called "downtown" or "Lower Manhattan", midtown is 14th to 59th, etc.
At that price point, you can get pretty much whatever you want. Just get a moderately high floor in a modern building and noise won't be an issue.
I particularly like the vibe on Irving Place. It's central and surrounded by great stuff, but is not a thoroughfare so the noise is minimal. Also, the 12th and 13th cross streets between 4th and 6th might suit you.
At $5k you might as well look at some of the smaller (800-1000sf) SoHo loft spaces, but if you're set on lux high rise I'd check out Barclay Tower in TriBeCa.
