things to do before spring week applications?

So I’m going to a UK target uni in september to study something econ related (unconditional offer)

I was wondering what would be the most useful things to do before I start applying? I see some people who do online certifications but I feel like they mean jackshit.

I was going to try split a jobtestprep membership between a few people once I get to uni. Other than that and the obvious (CV formatting) , I wasn’t too sure what else I can do over the summer to improve my chances.

Any tips would be great

  • Spring week applications begin as early as end of August/ start of September, so it's important to have your CV and cover letter template ready for some of the more rolling banks. The first few weeks of uni will be busier than you realise in meeting new people, starting your courses, and settling in, so it's helpful to get these elements sorted before you start.
  • With regards for online tests, you don't need lots and lots of practice - just become familiar with the styles and have a few attempts, so that you are prepared for what comes up but for some of the rolling applications, it could be useful to start practising tests before uni.
  • You're right regarding online certificates as they mean nothing.
  • Other things you can do to prepare is look through the different divisions of a bank and perhaps reach out to some employees to learn about what they do, so that you can decide which divisions you're most interested in applying to.
  • Interviews will come later down the line in late October/ November but prep for these will include standard questions like "Tell me about yourself" and other motivation and behavioural questions regarding your skills, CV, and why you want to work in this industry.
  • Given that they aren't expecting first years to have any relevant industry experience, accumulating any experience over the summer like a part-time job, tutoring, volunteering is beneficial in demonstrating the key skills required that you will be asked about in your interview

BUT most of important of all: enjoy the long summer!

get any finance work experience you can before uni, whether that's with your dad's friends or connections, or whether it's an official work experience over summer (some firms do this). in uni, join the finance societies, m&a analyst programs, investment analyst etc. make sure you're actually doing a role.

over the summer, get some interesting hobbies/volunteering if possible and also read up into different divisions in finance, and make sure you know what you are actually interested in, IB/ST/AM/ER etc. so you can target your apps properly. Also learn the relevant technicals ask

hey, thanks for the answer

do u think its worth cold emailing smaller firms for work experience or not really? i live in london anyways which helps

yes, yes, that helps. though your chance of luck is close to 1-5% - depends who you reach out to (better success with PAs and the founder/director), and whether there is some commonality with the persn you are reaching out to. also look at searchfunder.com for some summer roles (unpaid). There's also this cool spring week guide made by LSE BIG which helped me a lot when i was applying: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jRi64iy4rxNJGVBr14gOYgQYJG_Lc3jq/view

hey, sorry one more thing

i was wondering what assessment practice website you'd recommend using?

i was thinking since I have summer I could practice some of the tests beforehand but wasn't sure whether to use jobtestprep or other websites.
