Thoughts on Long Island City?

Hey guys, for some background I'm moving to New York this summer with my GF. I'm doing IB and she is going into a pretty good corporate job, both of our offices will be in midtown.
We've been considering Long Island City pretty seriously, the commute is like 15min and we could get a lot more for a lot less than anything we've been able to find in Midtown, but we're not sold on living in Queens..
Anyone with experience or thoughts on LIC?

If you're by the water, then that's cool. Otherwise, I dislike that there's not much to do in LIC, and it's overcrowded.. (think residential building, concrete, more residential buildings..). However, you can probably get a nice apartment in LIC for a much lower price compared to the city.

Walking around LIC at night can be sketchy (there are many long and dimly lit blocks in that area) due to it being the primary location for warehouses and industrial facilities. 10 + years ago it used to be a pretty sketchy area, and the only skyscrapers in LIC were the Citi buildings. Now, you can barely tell apart the Citi buildings..

LIC is fine, but just make sure you are weighing your tradeoffs on what you want.

Over the years I’ve lived in crappy apartments in areas I liked and nice apartments in areas that were just ok (and eventually could afford more of a nice apt in the area I wanted) and I found that I preferred the crappier apartment in the right area. It is all relative and there are degrees of “bad”, but I found that being close to the office, able to walk, and able to go to the bars/restaurants/museums/etc that I wanted on short notice outweighed the fact that my apartment was old and didn’t have all the amenities I wanted (small kitchen, no washer/dryer, etc)

I find LIC to have nice apartments but it isn’t where I would spend nights and is still a fair bit of a subway ride from the areas of Brooklyn I enjoy. It just comes down to what you prioritize. If spending the same amount of money I would choose Manhattan, if you are looking to save money then that is another thing to consider as there really aren’t cheap options in Manhattan.

If your commute is reasonable, then no reason to care about living in Queens. There is no "prestige" in living in a particular borough - people may be less willing to visit the Bronx for a variety of reasons, justified and not (and no one will go to Staten Island), but there is plenty to do in every borough and LIC is no different. Sure, maybe fewer nightclubs than in Manhattan, but there are also a ton of awesome breweries. No, not a ton of Michelin starred restaurants (though Casa Enrique is the best Mexican in the city), but there is also a huge variety of freaking amazing ethnic food in western Queens.

As with everything else in life, there are trade-offs.

Overall: Nicer and newer apartments for less price compared to Manhattan. Generally more family friendly. Less restaurants and bar options but still solid. IMO You can break down LIC into 3 buckets:

1) Hunters Point area - near waterfront, amazing parks and views, family friendly, pretty good restaurant and bar options. Commute to Midtown easyvia 7 train but might require you to walk a fair bit to get to the trains.

2) Court Square area - lots of new developments, more up and coming than Hunters Point area. Late 20s / early 30s adults. Fantastic commute to both manhattan and brooklyn (G). Less developed in terms of restaurants and bars compared to Hunters Point (either way, they're about 15 min walk from one another). New Trader Joe's opening there among other shops.

3) Queensborough area - feels more like the old LIC. New developments popping up here and there but still has the industrial warehouse feel. Depending on your location, might be near the projects, so feels a bit more "sketchy"

It kills your game if you're single...Can't pull a chick and be like BUCKLE UP BABY, WERE HEADED TO QUEENS!

I'd live in Manhattan if I were you - there is more to do and you'll have to travel less to go out to eat, party, whatever else. There are a lot of nuances that aren't readily apparent, but I'd choose manhattan 10/10 times.

Honestly, with your setup, LIC could be just fine. But, for single guys trying to pick up chicks in Manhattan, LIC is a death wish and sounds like Staten Island or Brooklyn or Jersey when trying to pick up chicks. You could enjoy more room and live up the life in LIC with your girl if that is what you want - this plan isn't too bad.
