Thoughts on moving to the burbs?

Hello All -

Accepted a PE offer located in a suburb after living in LA for a few years for my analyst stint. I’m curious how those of you who have moved out of a big city / metro area to a suburb (e.g., CT, Texas, Florida, etc.) have found living there so far. I have searched the forum, but most of the posts are focused on older folks with families. Im most curious to hear from younger people. Bonus points if you are single, ha.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights on moving to the suburbs after living in a big city:

  1. Cost Savings:

    • Financial Benefits: Many users highlight the significant cost savings when moving from a big city to the suburbs. For instance, in the thread "1st year analysts: stupid to move into NYC right now?", a senior member advises against moving to Manhattan due to the high costs and suggests staying in the suburbs to save money, especially if you have student loans.
  2. Safety and Quality of Life:

    • Safety Concerns: In the thread "Where to live in Minneapolis?", a user shares their experience of moving to the suburbs due to safety concerns in the city. They mention that while the suburbs can be boring, they offer a safer environment compared to the city.
  3. Personal Growth and Networking:

    • New Opportunities: Relocating to a new area can be a great opportunity for personal growth and expanding your network. In the thread "Question for Those Who Moved Cities", a user mentions that moving to a new city was the best decision they made, as it pushed them out of their comfort zone and allowed them to meet new people and grow personally and professionally.
  4. Career Impact:

    • Career Progression: Moving to a new city or suburb can have an impact on your career. In the same thread, another user expresses concerns about the potential back-step in career progression when moving to a new market. However, others argue that the experience can be beneficial for your career in the long run.
  5. Social Life:

    • Making New Friends: Moving to a suburb might affect your social life, especially if you are single. In the thread "Moving to a new city by yourself? Can anyone share experiences?", users discuss the challenges of making new friends in a new city. However, they also highlight the importance of finding new activities and interests that you couldn't enjoy in your previous location.

In summary, moving to the suburbs can offer significant cost savings and a safer environment, but it may also present challenges in terms of social life and career progression. It's important to weigh these factors and consider how they align with your personal and professional goals.

Is the suburb Orange County? Because if so there’s a big difference between that and small town USA.

Your suburban experience will vary wildly from place to place. Some still have great restaurants, things to do, people to date, etc. Some…do not.

Tampa? I started off in NYC, then went to Chicago, and now I'm also in south Florida. Not single and moved with my fiancé, but coworkers are part of the dating scene here and doesn't seem all that bad.

Have kept mostly similar hobbies through the moves (though golf is slowly taking up more and more of the share) - great breweries in the area, food scene is hit/miss (big change from the city diversity), need a car to get around (insurance here blows), and people here seem to be friendlier for the most part (joined a local gym - met some guys that invited me to a run club and their slow pitch softball league.) All in all happy with the move, can share/expand on anything if you'll be new to the area!

Suburban life in SoCal + single. I love it. If I want to go out with friends, it’s a short drive to the coastal cities where the bars are. If not there’s plenty else to do. Definitely more family oriented than living in a city, I like that vibe. Still run into people from my childhood and that’s kind of cool as well.
