What are your passions/interests outside work?

So I’m starting an IBD role in a few months and I can’t help but feel like my youth is about to be spent behind a desk working. Just figured that I have not developed any interest or passion in anything at all. I have been to focused on school, internships and getting an IBD role. It’s here now and I am grateful but it’d be nice to have a passion/ an interest for the sake of my mental health. I am looking for ideas of an interest I can develop. I’m tired of the regular relaxing with a nice movie or going out with friends to pass away time.

Work out. But if you don’t consider that a real hobby than you can try reading. Reading is something I really got into in high school and it’s really helped me develop into a more interesting person overall. I’m also a PC enthusiast, planning on building a new rig soon. Been playing as much Elden Ring as possible lol. I also paramotor sometimes. Motor sports is another big hobby for me, but I’m limited to only watching it and dreaming about racing as I don’t have a proper car (yet). I have a sim set up and try to race as much as I can. It’s very addictive and competitive. Just a couple things I’m into, but honestly just pick up a hobby that you enjoy doing. Could be anything (cooking, painting, etc).

Working out, cooking (esp meal prep that tastes good), travel, extreme sports (scuba, skydiving, jet skiing), chess, reading, watching Jake Tran documentaries and other informative YouTubers.

I’ve cut back on drinking a lot too mainly because of my workout schedule. I’ve found the constant, short-term fun I have getting hammered not only makes it feel dull, but it also messes with my eating schedule and I’m severely dehydrated the next day. Cutting back on alcohol has let me save a lot of money and spend it and develop some of the hobbies I have listed above. And I still drink - I just save it for special occasions 😉

I also deleted tiktok, Twitter, and Instagram and instead use WSO as my “social media” for better or worse. This lets me read a few posts when I’m bored and then hop on a game of online chess or read a book.

I’m currently vacationing in Italy so I have more free time to cook my pasta - I tried meal prepping pasta but it dries out too much. If you have the 20 minutes available daily, then making a sauce over the weekend (I like adding garlic, white onion, basil, chili flakes, salt, pepper, and butter) along with cooking the pasta fresh is a great midday meal. I also meal prep chicken breast by wet brining it and then either pan frying if I have time (salt pepper butter) or throwing it in the oven seasoning with brown sugar, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion flakes. For the pan fried, after the chicken is done I deglaze the pan with chicken stock and add a little flour to thicken it up. Then toss in some sriracha and honey with broccoli and the sweet spicy sauce from that is a personal favorite of mine.

Another way I like to prep chicken (for some variety if I do the above for lunch then I’d do this for dinner) is I make a marinade of mayo, hot sauce, and roasted cumin. The mayo gives the chicken an amazing sear on the pan and I love doing it w chicken thighs because I can overcook a little and still get juicy meat.

In the states I would meal prep rice instead of pasta and would add tomato bouillon and chicken bouillon. Got them at the local Hispanic grocery store and it’s a game changer. Lot of sodium but since I drink around 6 liters of water a day I’m okay with it.

Also I’ve linked Ethan cheblowski’s new video. His stuff is always great and I’ve tweaked a lot of his recipes to work for me.

Would be happy to exchange recipes or discuss further in PM if you want :)

my passions have evolved over time (aside from surfing) but the best thing you can do is try random shit, expose yourself to chance. go for a random walk in the center of a city without airpods or other distractions and see what you stumble upon. try museums, try fishing, try distance running, try charity, try learning a new language/sport/craft, take a class. some of it won't stick, but occasionally something will.

I have been into sport since I was a child. Now I like boxing and cycling. It is awesome when you are cycling early in the morning listening to some audiobook in the background. Perfect pastime to my mind.

Great replies so far, wanted to add my input:
Euro basketball, scuba diving, movie-going (at the theaters), skiing, board games, restaurant dining, traveling.

Stuff that I want to start learning about soon: cigars, wine, mixology (there was a great recent thread on stocking bar carts)

My hobbies include:

- Debunking western pig jew-media propaganda on the internet (Reddit, Twitter, TikTok) and spread Russian/Sino nationalism.

- Tell people how much I hate minorities online and in-person.

- Lament the glory days of the British Empire, Roman Empire, Hellenic League, Han Dynasty, Carthago, etc.

- Drop 60k on a custom suit of historically accurate and functional high gothic steel plate armor and a halberd, book a plane ticket anonymously to some random African village in Somalia/Ethiopia and go ham on some defenseless villagers who think the Ninth Crusade is nigh.

My main hobby would be endurance exercise, most of the year I'm training for a goal. That could be a marathon, a cycling race, or climbing a high-altitude mountain. I'm somewhat competitive so when I'm training for something I usually go balls deep.

I also enjoy and read about specialty coffee, watches and wine.

This is one of my proudest efforts in cycling. 50mi on a 1mi track at 24.1mph. I took the KOM for this effort on Strava. I just went through a breakup with a girlfriend at the time and the pain in my legs felt easy. I also rode 8mi to the track and ran out of Gatorade the last 15mi and just pushed on to get the KOM. I had updates on my Garmin telling me how fast I was going for the KOM and managed to keep 24mph. It was on a Trek Madone with clip on aerobars and GP 5000 tires.

Also, I wasn’t wearing a shirt and was in boardshorts. I was relatively aero.
