What do you spend on rent/mortgage, where do you live, and what is your salary?
Want to get a sense of what people are paying in different cities relative to their salary as I start to think about what I should be paying.

I pay 1840 in a larger flexed 3 bedroom apt in a Fidi NYC luxury building
Nice - I love luxury buildings. Having a gym nearby just makes so much sense.
With two roommates?
$1840 for 3br? What part of the city?
It says in fidi nyc; fidi is short for financial district which is the bottom part of Manhattan
Thats each. Not total.
Bought a decent townhome in the SE in October 2020. $1,250 mortgage + $175 HOA. Purchase price was about 240k.
Incoming Associate, so 175k base.
Hoping to step up to something real nice in the next 2 years or so.
NYCers are sick rn.
2BD 2BA? Sounds like a really LCOL city.
3BD, 2.5 BA, great area that has blown up.
Which city?!
Lol I'm about 20 minutes north of ATL. IMO, ATL and CLT are the places to be for IB. Most places around here pay NY money or are close to it, have generally better cultures/WLB, and you aren't getting destroyed by high costs and taxes.
same monthly about but 3br 2.5ba single family with no HOA (also in the SE, but not downtown, suburbs 15-20mins from the action, maybe I'm ATL too!)
keeping my income secret as always
and in the same boat, before I turn 40 we'll be in our forever home, market too hot rn so just stashing cash for a better opp
Brofessor you miser you can definitely afford a nicer house than this ha.
"can" and "should" and "want" are different verbs for a reason
I have no need for anything nicer than what I have. if we expand the family beyond some houseplants and the incoming puppy, maybe it'll feel cramped, but it's great for now. also when we bought it I was making maybe 1/3rd what I'm making now so there's that
what kind of puppy???
boxer
Best dogs in the world! My family has had them since WW2 when my great-grandpa served with some Boxers in his unit.
WHOA! would love to know some stories about that, that's awesome
Our family doesn't have a lot of stories because he was largely quiet about it, but I'll say what I do know. His unit jumped out of planes into Berlin with German Shepherds and Boxers. According to him, the GS's were "always on", whereas the Boxers could "turn off" and be like a normal dog when shit wasn't hitting the fan. He loved them so much that he bought my grandma one when he came home, and my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc have had Boxers ever since.
While he died in the 70's from lung cancer, it wasn't until 2003 that my great-grandma passed. When she died, my grandma went through their stuff and found pictures of my great-grandpa with some Boxers at the base he was stationed at, blueprints of Hitler's palace, a picture of what we think is him at Dachau, an article of him in the newspaper recalling what he had seen at Dachau, and a picture of Joseph Goebbels. Pretty crazy shit.
What is SE? Seattle?

250k all-in with $125k base
$2800 rent for a 1BR in LA (incl utilities)
Hoping to move somewhere cheaper ASAP
At least you got a 1br. how many sq ft?
In Miami I paid $1600 for a 405 sq ft studio. Was a brand-new building with a rain shower, quartz countertops, really nice gym, rooftop pool.
My base was $65k.
Now moving to the Bay Area with a base of $120k, aiming to not pay more than 2k if I can help it.
Total monthly payment (home insurance + mortgage payment + property tax escrow) = ~$2700 between my wife and myself
3,200 sq ft, 3br /3.5ba, about 15 mins from downtown
Mortgage/taxes come out to ~$3300/mo. 4bed 2.5bath house on 1.3acres, outside of Philly (main line). Love it so far, probably has appreciated ~10% since buying.
Rent + Utilities = $1,000/mo. (I split a 760 sq ft. 1 bed 1 ba with a roommate)
Salary: $100k
Location: MCOL
roommate...like s/o?? kinda small if not, no??
yes, s/o. not small at all.
Rent in HCOL Northeast city is $3,050, split like 60/40 between my SO and I.
I make roughly $260K all-in and she makes about $80K.
That rent is frightening. No plans to buy?
~8% of your pre-tax income on rent is nice though - fairly low
Live in the south -- $600k home, 2500 sq ft, 3 bed 3.5 bath: mortgage is $3,400
$250 base, $700k all in
$700k in Corp dev? Are you the group head?
Yeah he is the HNIC
Yes I run the group
Own condo in LA/SD/SF (couple blocks from water, less than 10 minute commute), pay ~$3.5K/mo in mortgage/taxes (~$500 in HOA incl utilities). Base $130, bonus ~100-120%
Pay $1600 for rent in shared apt in NYC w/ 150k base, but finding myself wanting to have my own place. The amount I'm able to save/invest per mo is what keeps me from doing that.
.
$1650 for a studio in the Midwest
Salary: Used to be 80k base but I'm switching to another role next month so bumped to 100k
It's kinda pricey but it's just a 5 min walk to work so that makes it worth it
$1,350 all-in condo payment including HOA, taxes etc. 1 Bed loft, 900 sq. ft. Building includes doorman, pool, fitness center etc.
Midwestern city like think Cleveland, St. Louis, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Cincinatti size etc.
All-in comp: Mid $100k range
Has to be Cleveland. The other cities cost more than this.
$725 (not a typo) rent for a large 1BR in the Western United States. Live in the best part of my city with low crime and great neighbors. If that rent sounds low it's because I haven't had a rent increase in 10+ years (soft skills matter, boys & girls).
Income is more than enough to cover my rent comfortably - it starts with a "2" but we're all just 1 chat with HR away from unemployment so I keep my monthly nut low.
London.
Rent is roughly $7000/month before considering council tax and ridiculous utilities. (Converted from pounds sterling)
2 Bedroom (converted extra room to home office), 2 bath … about 1000 sq ft with patio and in a new/luxury building with amenities (gym, etc.). … plus desirable location
Damn. Must be a very nice location. Even in London I feel that’s quite a lot.
My rent/mortgage progression:
years 1-3: $800-1,200 (crappy with roommates)
years 3-6: $1,500-2,500 (shared with gf so got nicer places
years 6-10: $5k-$6k solo
Later on: $18k for mortgage, taxes, etc
now: just taxes and HOA
You pay $18K/mo for a mortgage in ATL?
No, that would be a fair bit of house in ATL, it’s in nyc.
Sydney, just over $1k/month (great COVID deal), 20 min walk from the office, $100k base
how's summer been for you?
Really shit summer, super humid, lots of rain and when there is sunnshine its always on a weekday when I'm at work. Was really hoping to get to the beach more now that covid is easing up but I've only been around 2-3 times this summer. Oh well there's always next year
Salary: 102K base
Mortgage: around 2900 - bought with 2 of my siblings.
5 Bedrooms, 3.5 baths.
DMV Area
Las Vegas, NV (downtown, 'old Fremont')
$2300/month (rent from Aug '19 and has not increased, fingers crossed)
2 bed, 2 bath, plus a den, approx 1400 sq ft
Nice man, sounds like a good setup. Were you a MechE in school? What's your age range if you dont mind me asking? An SO living with you? Just curious as to the demographic of homeowners here on the site as mentally prep myself for owning in a few years hopefully. Not sure if i would buy a house if I were single.
$2400 for 720 sq ft 1 BR in boston on the 30th floor of a lux building (got great covid deal). on 90k base
just signed a $2800 for 500 sq ft studio in NYC on top floor of lux building. im annoyed at the higher payment and significantly less sq footage. on 120k base
What do you mean by COVID deal? Seen it a couple of times here but can’t figure out what it really means
Getting concession. So for example, some landlords would offer 1-3 months off on a 12 or 24 month lease. Brings the rent down dramatically, sometimes up to $400-500 a month.
What part of NYC? Looking for something in this price range...
Kips bay/murrayhill/mid town east.. its a tough market out there good luck
Anyone here familiar with Houston? Thinking of maybe moving there and got a datapoint from a friend who is AN1 in IB. Thoughts on paying ~1800 (incl utilities, amenities etc.) in a very high end luxury building for 600-700 sq ft 1 bed in a prime location? Is this going overboard (for houston)
~$2,150 (incl. utilities) for a 730 sq ft 1bd 1ba in the midwest - split with girlfriend. not bad, but really wanna own in a couple years so will move somewhere else in the US then
and it was a covid deal lmfaooo i think net rent was less than $1.9k but still. yeah downtown chicago - we live in a pretty nice building but even better ones are closer to $3k for the same space. that's awesome tho that's great prices for what you're getting and in large areas. you still paying that now?
Rent - West Village - NYC - 3 Bed 2 bath $7,000 mo (split with SO)
