Israel aid
Commerce, Education, and the uh, um, what's the third one there, let's see. I can't, the third one, sorry. Oops!
Perfect! You are now qualified to be the Secretary of Energy.
Didn't Energy also turn out to be the one he was going to cut?
US space force
Cut parts of Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security. I pay too much for these programs that I don't use and may never actually see the benefit of (social security for example). Let people decide for themselves what is best for each of their individual circumstances.
I'm not saying to gut it, but tighten the eligibility conditions.
Eliminate atf, Medicare, Medicaid, social security. Spend the savings on ubi and a basic universal health insurance.
IRS
Farm subsidies. Almost all of it goes to products Americans don't consume in bulk. In 2016 the top three subsidized crops werehttps://usafacts.org/articles/federal-farm-subsidies-what-data-says/</a"> corn, sugar, and soybeans. For corn,https://afdc.energy.gov/data/10339</a"> like 40% of that goes to ethanol.
So a full quarter of farm subsidies are going to products which the average American isn't going to eat (soybean production is almost entirely geared towards export to Asia). That's absurd. Moreover, the days where you have independent farmers producing these products are long gone; https://www.cnbc.com/2014/05/06/state-of-american-farming-big-producers…</a">4% of farms grow 66% of product, and as Secretary Perdue made it clear, that is a trend which is being encouraged, not discouraged.
Military spending can be drastically pared back. Reforming the healthcare system (e.g. drug pricing) would be a major help. Increase the gasoline tax, for sure.
But the problem is revenue, not expense. We've been cutting taxes for decades because it's easy and popular, but it's also very difficult to meaningfully cut entitlements, so revenue loss is outpacing expense reduction
Military spending and other such tentacles of the national security state.
I would like to be able to opt out of social security. If people want it they can opt in but I don't like being forced to participate in a government run ponzi scheme because people aren't capable of saving money.
I would gut the TSA because they are just a horse and pony show to make people feel safe.
I would abolish the DEA. Prohibition has never worked and we don't need a special agency to do it. The FBI is already more than capable.
Medicare and medicaid should be able to negotiate drug prices.
Farm subsidies, a least no more for corn. All it does is make meat cheaper and high fructose corn syrup cheap which is making America fat.
Would need security clearance and a detailed budget to get into the Military and Homeland security options.
SEC
SS definitely gets the ax. Also, imho we should reestablish the Public Works Administration or start a new, similar program to put under-qualified people to work rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure
I think the nature of government agencies is far too complex for any monkey to understand, so to say you'd cut an entire program with impunity is just short sighted. I'd be willing to bet that except for the most intense libertarians, everyone could agree with parts of every government agency. does this mean I'd vote for healthcare for everyone? no, but that doesn't mean I'd ban medicaid, there needs to be at least one person collecting the data on emergency room visits by uninsured persons and handling reimbursements.
do I want to cut the military? might as well start calling everyone comrade cause we'll be invaded, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't favor a scaling back possibly (I'm not educated enough on the subject).
here's a good way to do it, go to http://www.crfb.org/debtfixer/ and actually see what difference your ideas make. I think you run the risk of destabilization if you outright get rid of social programs, so while the libertarian in me hates the idea of govt pensions for life, I think SS as an institution has to stay, but we can make reforms to make it sustainable. the IRS? we need a tax collector, look at Italy, but that doesn't mean we can't massively simplify things by eliminating loopholes, pork, deductions and increase revenues while lowering rates (sorry PE guys, you'd hate my proposals).
in general, I'm a fan of trimming fat, but radical weight loss in a short period of time can be dangerous, so it's better to reform your diet and habits and get on a sustainable path to long term fitness, so it is with government as well
I think the IRS and tax code should be entirely revamped. Why is it complicated?
I know we’re all aware of the analogy of eating at a fine restaurant and you order off a menu without prices. Sure, you can guess the steak is more pricey than the kale salad like your income is a guess measure of your taxes. Then the waiter comes and asks you to pay up. Get it wrong and the waiter will get angry and ask you for more money until you get it right.
It’s a stupid system. I’m not advocating for getting rid of the IRS, just revamping it and the system as a whole.
Also NASA and the military are very important. The military spending should be reigned in. I’ve always thought it would be a good idea to have fuck ups go into the military and do jobs that develop some skills. The guy who has the meth problem? Ship him off, lock him down in some rehab, and then send him to a mail room. Eventually teach him basic accounting or something like that. At least he can contribute to society instead of taking my damn tax dollars to make sure he’s fed in prison...
Keep in mind that if we're cutting something at the federal level we're still allowing states/locals to handle it at their own level. So cutting is just de-federalizing.
To that end, I'm comfortable with very heavy cuts, especially to anything that fundamentally doesn't need to be handled at the federal level. I don't think its crazy to talk about wholesale eliminations of Education, Commerce and probably a host of others.
So what belongs at the federal level . . military is something that logically belongs at the federal level and not state level. Environment, to some degree, should be federal; imagine the free rider problem if each state was in charge of its own clean air and water.
But outside of that we should cut aggressively. And before I'm accused of being a far right nutjob, let me say that military also needs to be cut. The bloat in defense spending is outrageous and no politician has had the guts to cut it since . . forever maybe?
