Where to live in Manhattan? - Good buildings to start looking?
I'm in the preliminary stages of finding a place in Manhattan to live next year. I'm looking for a 1 bedroom under $3500. Anyone familiar with the city's real estate? Good buildings to start looking? Proximity to work is not an issue.
Need some more info. I don't really understand how proximity to work or school isn't an issue. Are you looking for a high rise or walk up? Do you need parking? Etc.
Your budget is pretty high, and you shouldn't have any issues finding a 1BR at that price in a number of areas in Manhattan, although it probably won't be a super high end apartment.
West Village, it's amazing, especially with a budget as high as yours. You can easily take the E train to midtown for work on West 4th near Christopher. Check it out.
Parking would be nice, but it isn't a necessity. Proximity to work isn't an issue because I have fairly reasonable hours.
I'm not looking to live in the most high end apartment in Manhattan, but I would like it to be modern.
http://www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/en/miami/accommodations/residenc… This is where I currently live, I understand I won't be able to find something exactly like this. I can go up in price if needed.
With your price ceiling you should definitely aim for the West Village.
I wouldn't live anywhere north of midtown or south ~area of financial district. But with that price range you can find anything. Really just a question of what you like the most. I would get a broker and have them show you around. You pay a bit more but it will save you the hassle.
West Village or Greenwich Village. Try and find a condo / coop owner subletting their apartment. Unlike many other cities, it really helps to use a broker in NYC to find the best place.
Im sorry I don't have a building for you, but I went for a run the other night and Im convinced if I could live anywhere it would probably be in the 9th street to 12th st area between 5th ave. and University Pl which is Greenwich Village. Also I'd check out between Hudson and 7th ave. from 12th st. to 10th st. which is West Village.
The key to enjoying your living situation is to live in or near a hot area, but not on a hot block. I want to be a street from good restaurants and nightlife, but I don't want to have drunken stumblers walking past my window and the police sirens chasing them.
As a point of reference Alec Baldwin lives in a large building on 10th and University which is in the middle of almost everything.
Hope this helps.
I would say to look in Nolita, Noho, or the Central Village.
www.abingtonproperties.com is one of the best no-fee management companies in my opinion, and their portfolio is complemented by a legitimate website that's (God forbid!) user friendly. Avoid a broker, it's not worth paying 12-15% of your annual rent for someone who's going to save you an hour that you could spend on the Internet finding a place.
Thanks all for the help.
.
Any Related building ((except for the ones in the mid east-90s) allthough in your price range you may only be looking at the UWS for a one bedroom, Croman has some nice apartments (all overpriced, but in "good" areas), and Glenwood (my favorite is 10 Barclay). I also second the poster that said you should try to find an owner who is subletting their condo or coop.
I second the UWS

Moving in July 1st and working in Tribeca at Citigroup I want to live on the Westside anywhere between Tribeca and 60th street.
How hard would it be to live in the East Village or Midtown East and get to work? (E train in midtown?) Let me know what you guys think!
Thanks!
I thought the closest train to 388 is the 1?
