Would you convert an A minus to a Pass?
I currently have close to a 3.9 GPA, but one of my classes would bring that GPA down because I got an A minus for that class. But would it be a bad idea to convert that one class to a pass? This class is one of the classes for my major. What would be the letter grade threshold you would use when it comes to determining whether to convert a letter grade to a pass?
Don’t, save the pass in case you get a lower grade in something else in the future. When looking at a transcript someone would assume a “pass” would have been far lower than an A- anyway.
dont do it. I feel like grades are given way too much emphasis during recruiting
It's often times just a sanity check for an applicant. you'll be fine
I did to mine and don’t regret it. Our school let’s us change as many as we wanted due to Covid but YMMV
no need ! an A- is still good !
i'm assuming that you have the option to take graded at school because of covid.
if so, my friends and I actually discussed this quite a bit. since most of us are finance kids at a target, we plan to do an MBA. we heard that it's best to do all-or-nothing (e.g. all pass/fail or all graded
if you do all pass, it's assumed that home situation was tough. if you do all graded, you show that you've done well. if you do some pass, some graded, there's an issue because admissions might assume you did really poorly despite having a good home environment, and there's no visibility to see that u just got an A-.
that said, some of us disagreed but i went all graded despite getting an A-. gpa hit was minimal but it's worth the peace of mind imo. again this only applies if u go to grad school
The pass/fail option is available for classes where the letter grade is lower than an A. For classes where the letter grade is an A, I can not use pass/fail. So I wouldn’t be able to convert all the grades to a pass/fail
I'm a similar situation where I have between a 3.9-4.0 and I got straight A-'s Would you keep them and take the GPA hit or take them all for P/F and blame COVID if it gets brought up?
Take the GPA hit - the marginal benefit of going from a 3.7 to 3.8/3.9 is neglible.
Bear in mind I’m also in college so not an expert
That said I’d keep your 3.9-4.0, and take all P/F. All A- will bring your GPA down and you have the COVID excuse. No one has any reason to fault you if you take them all pass fail. On the other hand if you take just a couple then people will doubt you
As another data point one of my friends going to MBB took all P/F since his GPA was 3.9+ and he didn’t care anymore
No one - not a single person - is going to give shit a for one A minus. This is a classic case of overthinking it.
An A- brings your cumulative down ~ 0.02 (4.0 scale)
What a drastic hit to the GPA!
I graduated with a 3.895 and my school refused to give me Summa Cum Laude. At the time that pissed me off a lot. Figure out if that means anything to you and be strategic about what you convert to P/F.
I was worrying about a similar situation to this- but in my case I had a 4.0 GPA and was worried I would get an A- which would ruin my four years of work (luckily I got all A's this semester and I'm done with school). The point is that if I were to have gotten an A- I would have kept it because my advisor told me that the most competitive grad schools for business and law will convert a "Pass" to a C and that is obviously horrible to anyone's GPA- she told me that they do this 1) to cut down on competition and 2) they assume you had a low GPA which caused the applicant to convert to P/F
Moral is don't P/F UNLESS you have no plans to go to a very competitive grad school (H/W/S) OR the earned grade is actually a C or below.
That’s interesting. Mind I ask which schools in particular would automatically convert a pass to a C ?
I dont have details on the schools, my advisor just told me it was certain top law and business schools, so I would presume T15 Law and M7 business schools will have some practices similar to what she was telling me. It could be the case that it doesn't happen for this particular semester due to Covid.
.
I mean, this isn't true. At face value this seems like a stupid question, but an A- is a 3.6 and an A is a 4.0, and that means something.
