Vanderbilt MSF Job Placement

Found this link on another forum. Since there seems to be a lot of questions about the Vanderbilt MSF program (and MSF programs in general) I though I'd post this link listing job placements from 2006-2009. Hopefully this should help answer questions that we often see on this forum (i.e. Is Vandy a target?, does it have good IB placement?, etc.). I'd be curious to see what people think of the placements too...

http://www2.owen.vanderbilt.edu/summerprep/MSF/MSF_Stats.html

Enjoy.

Haha I thought this might draw some positive attention. I found this on the gmatclub.com forums. I figured it would be more useful over here. The MSF community over there is pretty small. There really isn't much discussion on MSF programs. It's mostly focused on MBA programs. I'm hoping this will be useful for people seeking more information on the program and hopefully will stop some questions from continually resurfacing every time application season rolls around.

Any opinions on the placements Anthony?

Haha, great find man. To be honest I think this is a great find. I would bet money that it will be taken down though (I saved it into excel so no worries).

Placement looks pretty solid. I would think that after seeing this placement the Vanderbilt MSF would be worth the money IMO. It looks to me to be a lot of boutiques mixed with some BB IB and corporate finance. I am actually surprised at how diverse the geographic placement is.

I am starting an MSF blog. It is pretty nascent right now, but once it gets a little more full I will start putting it out there.

Sounds good. Why will this get taken down? I was concerned about putting this up because it puts students names out there but I don't think that is a huge issue. This information can be very useful to MSF applicants trying to make a decision on what program to attend. Is there some forum rule about posting this kind of link that I am unaware of?

No, not talking about on this site. Seems like Vanderbilt is kind of lax with their listings. I mean I think Vandy, if they find out about this being public, might hide students names. No trouble on your end, just surprised to see this public.

I think this is great though. Anyone who has an MSF degree might want to hit up those firms hiring Vanderbilt students. They might have a loyalty to Vanderbilt, but at least the HR department and hiring managers know what a MSF degree is and have experience with the graduates. One of the biggest hurdles for an MSF degree holder is convincing HR or a hiring manager a) what the degree is and b) the value added of an MSF

Yea I agree. I'm actually surprised this information is floating around on the internet. Although, I'm not TOO surprised. A friend of mine asked Vandy for MSF job placements and they sent him this information in an excel file. This is actually the second time I am seeing this information either posted online or being offered to people if they PM someone. If they are sending this information (with student names) out to prospective admits maybe they just don't care that much.

I'm doing some more digging to get some placement info. on students at the MSF programs;

UVA:

no info there

Villanova:

maybe anthony can chime in there

Duke:

no info there

UF:

Wells Fargo - 7 (Most IBD I guess) Citigroup - 3 BOA/ML - 1 JPM - 1 Capital One - 2 Deutsche Bank - 1 Blackrock - 1 Bernstein GWM - 1

For the Duke MMS program here is what I can add from second hand knowledge:

Goldman Sachs Allen & Co Wells Fargo Morgan Stanley Bank of America Zelman Associates BNY RBS DUMAC (Duke's endowment)

I know for sure that there are a few other financial jobs out there but i am not sure what firms they are with.

There are also several students that went into consulting and marketing jobs (few examples: EY, PwC, AMEX, LEK consulting, AT Kearney, Accenture, etc etc)

This program seems to attract a more diverse group in terms of career aspirations, so you won't necessarily see a ton of finance jobs out of the program.

Hey nelly, I was the one who posted the Vandy placements on gmatclub. Ironic, because I was actually just getting ready to post it here as well. I wasn't really sure if I should have kept it secret or not, due to the student's names being on it. However, I did just find it by digging around on google... so I figure it's fair game. I know that the career center works a lot to get students placed.

Anyhow, if you notice at the top of the page this is just as of Dec 09, so not all of the current students are listed.

For those of you who read my other post, I ended up choosing LSE's Msc Acc/Fin over this program. It was a very tough decision though.

Thanks for finding this information and posting it on gmatclub. If we had detailed info like this for all MSF programs it would make the choices a lot easier. For what it's worth, I think you made the right choice. You can't go wrong with LSE. Great recruiting in Europe and lots of name recognition. Congrats.

Just finished a MSF program at Tulane and here are some of the career placements off the top of my head. Mostly MM stuff but nonetheless here it is...

Johnson Rice- commodities research Howard Weil- commodities research Macquarie (NY)- commodities research Citi (houston)- trading analyst Sequent Energy (houston)- trading analyst JPM PWM Piper Jaffray Tudor Pickering Holt- research Geneva Trading- prop trading Trigate Capital (P/E) KeyBanc- IBD Raymond James

Talked to one of my buddies who did the similar LSE program and he landed a job in asset management at Macquarie (nyc)

I've seen something similar for Princeton's MSF as well; it could probably be found pretty easily if someone wanted it.

anyone else think the tulane stats look a little shifty? Besides placing at JPMoorgan, it doesn't look anything like all the other reports do.

just a thought

Tulane is wack. I know people who graduated in that class and of the 76 or so MFINs, about 10 had jobs after graduating. Obviously JP Moorgan (LOL) sticks out, but that person had a dad who was a Partner at KKR, trust me Tulane didn't get him that job. They were careful to not list the employment %s but trust me, there is a reason Tulane is a 5th tier MFIN program.

Tulane undergrad class of 2009 here. I sincerely doubt there were 76 MFIN's total- in fact I think it would be closer to 20 if not 10. You might be including Masters of Acct, which is far more popular. I know some folks in the MFIN '10 class, and I think the number was in the single digits. 20 tops.

That being said, I do agree with some parts of your argument. Tulane's a great school and will give you ample opportunity in the Gulf Coast if you show some promise- but the 2010 MFIN placements have been, well, lackluster as far as I know. Few people at Bloomberg and Houston Energy (Ops/Trading), and one person prop trading in Chicago. Sporadically, the UG program will send a few kids to NY IB.

Well in all fairness to Tulane, how many kids had internships, how many applied to jobs, how many had decent resumes. Villanova has solid placement stats, but there were a few people who struggled to find jobs. Those were the people who had no internships during UG or during their MSF and who really did not network effectively.

76 is pretty large for an MSF class though. Most I find are around 20-30, maybe 60 if they have 2 cohorts. Anything over 30 and the school better be well known with established recruitment.

New stuff on Claremont McKenna.I honestly wasn't very big on this program before, but this is really pretty damn impressive. Obviously mostly regional placements as per usual but some new york placements as well. The internship clip on the page seems like it helps students land internships for the summer before the program starts. Is it just me or does that rock balls relative to a lot of other comparable career services departments?

Cheers to CMC

My buddy is at UVA's MS Comm. He said every single wanna-be-banker got it (BBs, top MM, elite boutiques)

No kidding. I have been interested in this program for a while, I would love to hear more about it from someone that went through the program. I also wanted to leave options to possibly go into trading. Would you happen to know off-hand if there is much recruiting in that division? If your buddy is willing to talk please shoot me a private message.
