Recruiting for FT roles after growth equity internship

I am a rising senior at a semi-target with a 3.8 gpa. I'm interning at a small, tech-focused growth equity firm this summer, but I'm unsure about the potential of getting a return offer due to the firm's size and previous history of return offer rates. I'm planning to recruit for ft roles over the summer (while obviously also ideally not letting it get in the way of my work), but I'm unsure where to begin. I'm basically just looking for advice about the types of roles I should be targeting given my background. I'm open to anything ib/pe/consulting related, just wondering where I would have the most success. I didn't go through any of those recruiting processes last year, so any/all advice would be much appreciated.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of your situation and actionable advice:

1. Challenges of Transitioning from Growth Equity

  • Growth equity internships often provide limited technical experience, which can make transitioning to roles like investment banking (IB) or traditional private equity (PE) more challenging.
  • Networking will be critical, as your growth equity background may not directly align with the skill sets typically sought in IB or PE.

2. Target Roles

  • Investment Banking (IB): This is a logical next step if you're looking to build strong technical skills and open doors to PE or other finance roles in the future. However, breaking into IB full-time (FT) recruiting can be competitive, especially if you didn’t participate in summer analyst recruiting.
  • Private Equity (PE): Directly targeting PE roles might be tough without prior IB experience, but some smaller or growth-focused PE firms might value your growth equity background.
  • Consulting: If you’re open to pivoting, consulting could be a viable option. Your analytical skills and exposure to tech-focused investments could align well with consulting firms, especially those with a focus on tech or strategy.

3. Recruiting Strategy

  • Networking: Start reaching out to alumni and professionals in your target industries. Informational interviews can help you understand the landscape and potentially secure referrals.
  • Resume Tailoring: Highlight transferable skills from your growth equity internship, such as financial analysis, market research, and deal exposure.
  • Technical Prep: For IB and PE, focus on mastering financial modeling and technical interview questions. WSO’s financial modeling templates and guides can be invaluable here.
  • Recruiting Timeline: FT recruiting for IB typically ramps up in late summer or early fall. Consulting firms also have structured timelines, so research deadlines for semi-target schools.

4. Balancing Work and Recruiting

  • Be strategic about your time. Dedicate evenings or weekends to networking and interview prep, ensuring it doesn’t interfere with your internship performance.
  • If your firm has a history of low return offer rates, prioritize external recruiting efforts while maintaining professionalism at your current role.

5. Additional Resources

  • Check out WSO’s Guide for Investment Banking Full-Time Recruiting for detailed timelines and strategies.
  • Consider WSO’s Networking Guide to refine your outreach approach and maximize your chances of landing interviews.

By targeting IB roles while keeping consulting and smaller PE firms as backup options, you can maximize your chances of securing a strong FT offer. Good luck!
