Hurricane Sandy - Going to work? (Please Post Updates in Here)
Fellow Monkeys,
How many of you are expected to make it into work today or tomorrow with Hurricane Sandy bearing down on us? Our offices are still open and around half of the analysts are going in.
Mod note (Andy) See current updates about returning to work here: "How many of you in NYC are back at work?"
I'm here. These East Coasters have no idea what bad weather is... this is hardly a drizzle.
The last few down here on the Texas Gulf Coast we've had hurricane parties.
Stay dry monkeys...I'm also at work. Tough 10ft commute.
As if we all needed another reason to wish we had your life, Patrick!
Boom. Been at work for a few hours now. Granted, markets close soon so it'll be pointless to be here.
Been at work since 8 in Midtown. Its like a small drizzle... leaving around noon though.
It hasn't really started yet...this is gonna be an Irene repeat.
office was asked to "work from home" today
I think many firms in Midtown are operating normally. Those in the downtown area are shut down for the day, including GS, DB, ML etc as these firms are located within evacuation zone A. MS is closing its downtown offices while keeping the headquarters and other offices in Midtown open which is a fairly typical arrangement.
Still, even for those firms that stay open today, many of their employees will not be able to make it to the offices as the Metro North, LIRR and NJ Transits are all shut down.
I'm one of two people (other is a director) on my floor at a BB in Midtown. Most are working from home.
i'm up in midtown and my whole office was told to work from home today.
More info here: http://washpost.bloomberg.com/Story?docId=1376-MCME5V07SXKX01-44N1IJF2D…
GS has activated their business continuity plan which makes sense.
Breaking news: We've decided we're all going home pending completion of a betting pool on who will postpone earnings tomorrow using the storm as an excuse to hold off.
Love it. You can bet that I will short them when markets reopen. Almost like a great tip to the trader
Working from home..... It is quite drizzle in midtown, but at least they are hyping it more than Hurricane Irene which barely effected my zone B. Now I got a good view of Zone A, B, C.
I've been going back and forth between whether postponing earnings would be a sign of good or bad things to come. Part of me says if they were awful I'd announce now when people aren't paying attention, but the other part says obviously you'd hold off as long as possible on shitty earnings. Pfeizer postponing and Burger King announcing has me thinking that you'd postpone the good news until everyone's back in the market, so that's actually the way I'm leaning. But we're ignoring that debate and focusing more on how neurotic we think management is at each of the companies with betting action. And all fingers crossed on Ford to kill it tomorrow.
lol http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=507402155936553&set=a.1152606684…
Home for the day also. Trying to find a bar open or something so I can start drinking. Rain and winds are pretty strong here though.
Here there is mild drizzle.
The real tragedy is that I have to go get my own lunch. And that Chipotle is closed.
At least the line at Chop't won't be too bad today.
Living in zone a and currently at home. Just saw a firetruck go by with an inflatable boat on top...
Do you live in Battery Park City? My highrise building there was ordered evacuated as of last night with all power and water cut off. I had to check into a hotel.
Yes, that's where I live. My building didn't order any specific evac other than reiterating what bloomberg said about leaving zone a. The only stipulation was that at noon today they shut down the elevators and locked the doors to lay down sand bags, so they warned us we needed to make a move if we wanted in or out.
They said power would be shut off if water got into the basement, but so far so good. My apt looks out to the east, so I don't know what the rest of BPC behind me is like right now, but from my window I can't see any other buildings besides mine that have power. The battery park tunnel is filled to the very top with water, crazy stuff.
No work today, chillen at home.
Still trying to break in... working an accounting job in the meanwhile. On the plus side, off from work today :)
i'm in california and the weather is awesome.
I second that :)
Ah, the beauty of working in a Zone A evacuation area. Working remote; remote utilization capacity: 63% of total capacity.Woohah!
As a native Louisianan, I laugh at you yankee chumps. It's a Cat 1. I unplug my nose in your collective general direction.
I walked around the block at 1ish
did manhattan get any flooding during irene?
Maybe in Battery Park but no.
the best is when the coolkids go out to surf.
haha choppy overhead swell @ 3 seconds.... sounds fun.
I had no work today, and I am glad- all interstates closed in CT..
Shame, looks like there's nothing to do except stay inside and listen to metal all day...
People are still delivering food...
I'm gonna test the Chinese today. I know they will deliver till 10pm at least.
hahahaha. I gobbled up some lo mein for lunch. From one of the few places that were open and willing to deliver...
I am in Soviet Russia, weather is good. Eyes closed or open.
So a crane snapped at One 57th (RE people should know what it is)...on my way...
Commuter, I saw that too. Really messed up, and the storm hasn't even officially made its landing yet.
All I got from this thread was to buy F on good faith of the equity analysis by BH's office.
Eh, so far I've listened to some tracks off of Under the Sign of the Black Mark, as well as Two Hunters by Wolves in The Throne Room.... Pretty lush.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Yeah, it definitely feels like more of a black metal/doom metal kind of weather. "Raining Blood" may not be appropriate yet...
I had Isis going for most of the day along with some Russian Circles and Red Sparowes. But man...you have inspired me to throw on some Tool. Maybe Electric Wizard later too.
a bunch of columbus circle footage to load. The crane was swaying in the wind.
seamless still has over 100 places listed as open and delivering food near me. I love manhattan. Time for some sushi.
^^ Yea I was thinking of putting on Come My Fanatics later...
I like that I heard about the crane here first, they are just talking about it now on the news :-)
Well guys. According to weather.com, Sandy will make landfall soon and DESTRUCTION IS IMMINENT. We survived Irene last year, we can sure as hell survive this. Hope everyone is safe out there.
DESTRUCTION IS IMMINENT? What about Kreator, or Sodom?
...lame pun, I know, but it had to be done.
Good call ITF, very good call. One of my favorite albums of all time.

if michael j. fox shoots footage during a hurricane, will it come out straight?
He rode the bike, i sat on the handle bars
I lol'ed.
Also, above, you're all forgetting to add Sepultura to that mix. They're definitely better than Kreator, on par with Sodom.
I bet Lloyd's of London is going apeshit right about now
Thanks for posting the videos Commuter, I watched them...
I'm watching the day after tomorrow. seemed appropriate

lol your fucking nuts commuter.
That is pretty cool, but yah you are a bit insane. Is that McDonalds open? Could you get the full menu, dollar menu?
Actually Mcd's was closed at 5pm YESTERDAY (and it's a 24hr one too) Midtown Manhattan NYC Columbus Circle 745pm hurricane Sandy http://t.co/ZD3yiWad
Last year I stayed at a hotel to get into work on time on Monday.
This year, it is happening on my one week "fall break". #FML
Ouch...was it your choice to stay at a hotel or firm mandated?
It was partly out of an abundance of caution having never dealt with a hurricane before; it was partly out of a "Hey! I want to join the 'got to work at 8AM after the hurricane' club".
Be safe NYC monkeys..looks crazy there
Are most people going to be back at work tomorrow morning?
definitely not GS/DB/Citi due to the FiDi/Tribeca location and proximity to the edge of the island. don't know about other banks. suspect that because of lack of public transportation it'll be a work from home deal.
Midtown Manhattan NYC 10pm Hurricane Sandy
Nice work Commuter. Way to utilize that free time on your day off. You're going to put The Weather Channel out of business with those quality videos.
We have the option of either working from home or coming in to the office. They left it up to us to make our best judgement as to whether or not it'd be safe to commute or not.
Do you guys think that it would be insensitive to try to follow up with a decent contact tomorrow morning? I'm trying to reach someone at DB ahead of their campus presentation this Thursday. Tomorrow is the best day time-wise to contact them, but I don't want my contact to think, "WTF is wrong with this kid."
Had one of the alums I've been keeping in touch with send me an email today, so I'm guessing it's fine.
Before you contact him or her check to see if there office is closed. If it is closed then contact away! I'm guessing his or her office opens Wednesday, so it'll most likely be a hectic day and it could mean the campus presentation will be pushed back due to that and road/airport conditions.
Tracked the storm yesterday and saw that it royally fucked up NYC. Hope all you monkeys are safe out there. It was slightly frightening how all the day drinking jokes turned into the scariest fucking updates I have ever seen. Irene was nowhere near as bad as Sandy.
Did anyone survive? I guess if you dont have electricity (or a place to live) you wouldnt be checking wso.....
This sure as hell better be your first stop!
At work... both days
any one looting tvs?
Thoughts on plants Audi Brussels and Volvo Gent?
I am guessing that they will share the same fate as Ford Genk in the LT (maybe even ST, who knows). This disindustrializing of developed economies will surely continue, and Belgium as one of the countries with one of the highest "social" burdens (as an employer you pay 3000 for a worker to earn 1500) will definitely receive additional blows. The closure in Genk also clearly illustrates that even the government is not able to convince companies to keep their production units in the country, you can hardly blame them though, over the past months our government has really done some amazing effort to scare away companies.
It's actually quite ironic that we need more than a year to form such an incompetent government.
Also interesting to watch is that all old Saab dealers have transformed into Subaru dealers, do you think that there are new Saab-like casualties waiting to happen?
Yeah, it still remains a really interesting sector.
Back on the topic of Sandy, how many of you are without powers in your apartments, where do you live and how do you cope with this situation?
FiDi dweller so am screwed. They are telling us we can't move back in for a week+. So hotel by work it is...thank goodness for renter's insurance.
Wow which part of the financial district are you at? Are you near South seaport? My building by Battery Park hasn't announced when can we move back or when will the power be restored yet. This is getting exacerbating.
Rental insurance would not have helped me as the insurance company would simply argue that my building was flooded therefore I should have bought flood insurance. In any case, I bet the premia on both rental and flood insurances in the city will skyrocket after this episode. It will be just like in FL.
Are you back to your building yet? For my building it could be 4+ months before it is habitable again. This is ridiculous. With 4 months they could re-wire the whole empire state building! Cooper Square Realty has got to be the worst building management in NYC. My building is condominium so presumably Cooper Square is still counting on collecting common charges from the unit owners while they sit around and procrastinating. They unit owners should all stop paying the common charges until they get the building back in order. That would give them incentives to hurry up and get the jobs done.
Hurricane Sandy - No Power and One Epiphany (Originally Posted: 11/07/2012)
Last week, I had the misfortune of being stuck in lower Manhattan during the hurricane and subsequent blackout. Being in Zone C, I assumed it'd be smooth sailing after the first day. The apartment was stocked up with food and the fridge was full of beer. Yeah, the wind was insane, but it would pass, right?
Wrong.
Last Monday night at 8:30pm, my girlfriend and I are eating dinner and watching news casters reporting in from the heart of the storm when all the sudden, we see an explosion in the distance. It was a Con Ed power station that flooded beyond anyone's expectations.
About a minute later, our power went out What followed was surreal. Our initial hopes were that it was a sort of fluke, that the lights would pop back on by morning. Not even close. It took about 23 hours until we realized the magnitude of the situation. Con Edison, the local power company, said we'd be without power until Saturday night - a full 6 days after we initially lost it.
A few hours after the power went out, I lost cell coverage. For the first time in a long time, I was completely cut off from the world. To even get cell reception for the first few days, I had to walk about 20 - 30 blocks. To top it off, every single one of my close friends was affected by the power outage and my family, which lives outside of the city, was facing an even greater stretch without power.
So, we did the only thing we could do. We got out the candles, kept water boiling on our gas stove to keep the apartment warm, stayed in after dark, and stuck it out.
Spending the week in NoPo, short for "No Power," was surreal. The stories you'd hear through the grape vine of roving gangs of looters and of people getting mugged in well-to-do neighborhoods were legitimately frightening. Learning of a gasoline supply problem was mind blowing.
Sitting in the apartment and trying to keep warm, I couldn't help but think about one of my favorite old action movies. Escape from New York. For those that haven't seen it, it's a 1981 John Carpenter film starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken. The year is 1997, Manhattan has been converted into a maximum security prison, the President's plane crashed in the middle of the island, and prisoners have taken him hostage. Snake Plissken is sent in via glider, which he lands on top of the old WTC towers in a strangely nostalgic scene, to rescue him. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.
As cabin fever started to set in on day three in NoPo, I started thinking back to one of my first blog posts on WSO: The Permanent Recession. The gist of the post centered on a presentation by Chris Martenson on the nature of debt, growth, and peak oil / peak resources. For those that want the TL:DR version is as follows:
If you've got time, I recommend watching the video in the post, it's informative, interesting, and surprisingly not dry in the least.
Seeing how radically different life immediately become after just a couple days without gasoline is pretty eye opening. The ideas espoused by peak oil evangelists, which are becoming harder and harder to refute, are really stark in my eyes. While there are many issues we face as a country, I don't think there is anything more vital than a forward looking energy policy. And while the fracking revolution is promising, it simply isn't enough in the long-term.
Power has returned to most of Manhattan just in time for election day. I'm not going to tell anyone how they should or should not vote, though if you've read enough of my posts on here you can probably guess which ballot I cast today. But, I am going to strongly emphasize the need for an intelligent, long-term energy policy. I encourage all voters to take a candidate's energy policy into account along with the other major issues of the day when they hit the polls.
And while Manhattan is almost all back to normal, our friends in Staten Island, New Jersey, and other areas are not all as lucky. If you'd like to donate to Sandy relief efforts, check out this site. Any donations you make can go a long way towards recovery.
Finally, did anyone else on WSO face a week without power? Any interesting stories you'd like to share? Feel free to throw them in the comments.
everyone's back to work now right?
Nope, my BB's tower above like the first 10 floors still has no electricity. Probably won't be working all week. Live in West Village too and all power is still out and not expected until Saturday to come back. Thank god for gas stoves though.
At least my FB short was profitable today.
It's always fascinating watching the effects on us human beings when we no longer have our machines that keep us going. Most of us will tough it out as you did, but others will turn to cruel looting, robbery, and other acts of desperation.
But one of the great things about this nation is how quickly we can all pull together as neighbors. On my block, the guys all formed a crew with chainsaws and tools and were able to clear up someone's yard of downed trees and debris in 15 minutes--then they did the rest of the block.
Beautiful thing.
Pretty over dramatic. We lost power for ALMOST a week, it wasn't that bad to walk up past 39th or w/e, eat at a restaurant and charge your phone. Stayed above freezing. NoPo...really?
Right, almost a week and people start getting mugged and people start looting. Places that are still out of power with gas lines that take hours are feeling it much worse.
Did you lose power? If so, did you stay in your apartment or book it to a friend's north of 40th?
I am starting to get annoyed with these "innocuous" posts to influence voters.
Same here, no power all week. I took like eight or nine dumps in central park.
that sounds pretty convenient. good use of the park.
The storm itself caused damage obviously, but the gas crisis and loss of power are hurting people even more; there's no heat and there's a very real possibility of freezing to death.
I got high as fuck on bath salts then went kayaking downtown.
Bahahhaha funniest post all year, hands down.
Still no power or water in my building downtown. Starting to get pretty damn cold. ConEd says not to expect anything until at least Friday. Living on the 18th floor with a dog doesn't seem like the best idea anymore.
Food ran out quick, had to eat my cat. Thank god my neighbor here in Chinatown knew how to cook it.
Where I was growing up we had power outages at least once every two weeks for 24-48hrs. People today are untrained with zero survivor skills, no military experience and no idea how to behave/ prepare themselves in situations like these. This whole thing really wasn't that big of a deal
Gas Stove..thats right go Natty...Vote Mitt.
I find it funny how fast uncivilized some people go when there's no electricity in civilized places. As a kid I grew up in a village in Mexico where there where few places with electricity, but never had to worry about crime at night. Also from volunteering in 3rd world countries, I noticed that for the first week with out power a lot of people freak out but once they come to terms with the situation they adapt and it's no longer a problem.
Hurricane Sandy - Preparation? (Originally Posted: 10/27/2012)
For those of you in NYC, are you doing anything to prepare for Hurricane Sandy? In particular, for anyone living in a mandatory evacuation zone, will you evacuate if the city sends out orders? Last year the city issued evacuation order for BPC but very few people actually obeyed. I think most people will opt to stay put as well this year. I know I will.
According to the hurricane tracker at Weather.com, Sandy is projected to touch down in MD then move inland and up north from there into PA, NJ then upstate NY. It wont come anywhere near Manhattan. Sandy will do about as much damage in Manhattan as Irene last year, which is basically nothing. Ithaca has more reasons to be worried about this storm than Tribeca. http://www.weather.com/weather/hurricanecentral/tracker
I am hoping that tomorrow the MTA decides not to shut down the subway system otherwise Monday will be hell trying to get cabs to get to works/meetings.
I'm in Battery Park and we never lost power, knock on wood. Still no power for blocks that are on the east side of West Street, but I'm seeing power come back on for several blocks to the east of those that line West Street.
I fully anticipate service being shut down. I agree that the storm's strength is being overblown and overdramatized, but from the (moderate) research I have done into it, it seems this will certainly be worse than Irene.
I stocked the fridge up and got a few nonperishables, but I live a couple hundred feet from a 24-hour Duane Reade so getting my hands on anything critical wouldn't be hard at all even in very severe weather. The most I did in terms of preparation was set my Xbox back up and reactive Netflix.
Thanks for you insights. Personally since I am naturally suspicious of governments in general (Ron Paul 2016!) I take everything coming out of the governor or mayor's office with a grain of salt. I just checked the weather channel storm trajectory again. At this point they tend to be fairly reliably and once again it shows that the storm will pass through PA into NJ and onto upstate from there. Rochester is now identified as potential hazard area but no, NYC is still safe.
Me thinks the Dutch picked Manhattan island in part because, being the good natural born engineers they are, they just knew that Manhattan was shielded geographically by Jersey on the west and LI on the east so that any storm/hurricane is extremely unlikely to afflict much damage in or near the city.
Last year Irene touched down in LI/western Brooklyn and went on to wreck havoc in New England where it annihilated a good chunk of VT (tropical storm in New England imagine that ) but it completely spared the Island of Manhattan. This year Sandy is coming from West and will probably do a tons of damages throughout the DC metro area, NJ and upstate but again it will spare NYC.
Sandy will be just another rain storm perhaps with some thundersnow this time but I dont expect any major flooding or buildings going down or windows beings blown open (except the really derelict ones which would collapese under any storm anyway).
I will check back here if/when I survive the storm to see if I am vindicated in my analysis. Good luck everyone and Happy Halloween!
i'm hoping sandy destroys it all.
.
Stocking up on beer. Flight was cancelled for a diligence trip already. Waiting to hear if the office will be closed.
either expected to go into work or VPN in
Classes canceled through Tuesday.
Might have to head into work on Tuesday.
This is just Irene v.2.
Don't know why but I always love this time of year in NYC. The 2003 blackout was so much fun.
This is not fun, little boy. It is so not fun. grow up
Looks way over dramatized - as usually. 75 mph sustained winds? Just looking at buoy readings at NOAA website on the path of hurricane doesn't show any gusts stronger than 50mph.... Certainly can be pushing high waters, but no signs of any monster coming whatsoever....
I received the mandatory evacuation order for my Battery Park City building by 7 PM today. Talked to the doorman who told me that, unlike last year, they are shutting down all water, electricity and elevators this time around so that literally everyone would have to leave (last year during Irene about a dozen of us stayed).
This is sheer stupidity. I had to book a hotel room in Brooklyn at last minute (furthest points from the water in NYC) for the next 3 days. When this non-event is over I will send my hotel bill to the mayor and governor's offices. Also had to reschedule meetings for next week.
feel for you. so a shelter is not an option, huh?
anybody heard of using gyms as shelters? I met a lady who said she's gonna stay at a 24 hour fitness for the couple of days. I wonder if it works.
Think brazzers will be able to handle the spike in traffic?
Just got power back a few minutes ago.
Is the MTA still down?
Where do you live? The subway will be out for a few days thou limited services will begin to be restored starting tomorrow. Buses are running if that helps.
I'm in Jersey City. Just asking considering I (may) need to head into work tomorrow.
Are the trains (specifically, B/D or 4/5/6) really not up and running?
Trains won't be up for days, my friend.

I live in West Village but currently in Midtown, first shower since Sunday. Its hell downtown. Also, my floor at work has no power so thats terrible too.
Thanks for the update. Limited Subway is coming back today but of course Manhattan below 38th street will not see service restored. Bloomberg is encouraging everybody to take bus...yeah right if you dont mind waiting 2 hours in a bus stop in freezing weather only to see one after another of crowded buses pass you by and then spend another 2 hours on the bus to travel 10 blocks.
Cars need to have at least 3 passengers to be allowed to cross the bridges into Manhattan to help alleviate congestion.
I wish that WSO could have a dedicated section for people to post Sandy related updates, seeing as how this affects so many members and other readers of this site.
Nolita resident .. still no power. Showered at a friend's place today, dying to get into a gym. No subway service in lower Manhattan for at least another week, even where they've pumped the water out they're going to need to go through and inspect all the electrical components for damage and repair. Thinking of going to my parents' house somehow and bringing a car back for two weeks or so. Not forking $15 over to a cabbie every time I need to get somewhere.
Live in Nolita .. still no power.

The real issue is, how do I keep at least one person from drinking so that there can be some sort of alertness in the house.

I still went to the halloween party at a lounge last night. It turned out to be a colossal disappointment. I wonder what will happen to my next one on 31st. Nobody cares about halloween now. But I paid for it so will go if I can.
I read somewhere that they were shutting down the subway for a couple of days because of the storm. MTA might as well seize the opportunity to do some much-needed renovation.
I'm not going tomorrow or Friday and did not go in today either. I live in Queens and work in midtown. My firm was officially closed Monday and Tuesday, but open the other days.
The subway this morning was a disaster. At every stop we wait for 5 mins. And the subways are like 10 mins apart from each other as well.
Live in Hoboken, complete mess here. No power all week, no transportation and flooded all over. Haven't been to to work this week and or building doesn't have much power
