Moving from an expert network to a HF

I've heard that people do sometimes move from an expert network (GLG, Third Bridge) to a buyside and sell side ER roles. I have an offer from a top expert network, and want to move to a fundamental equity HF in the mid-term.

For those who made the switch or know someone who made this switch, can you shed any light on this process?

I've personally never seen this happen. What is your professional background to date? Hopefully you have prior financial analyst experience (investment banking or private equity). Without that, I'd do everything you can to get trained in financing modeling. Secondly, landing a buy-side role is very different than a sell-side role. You need to learn to think like an investor so I'd read as many books on investing as possible. Thirdly, I'd regularly make stock pitches that you can share with your network on the buy-side and actively solicit feedback. Good luck!

For what it's worth, my background is 5 years investment banking -> work at $50Bn AUM asset manager as a fundamental equity/high yield credit research analyst.

Moving to the buyside into an equity analyst role is extremely rare. If you see someone move to a HF from an expert network it is almost always to an internal prop research team that speaks with experts and writes summaries for analysts and PMs. The big mulit strat HFs and tiger cubs tend to have these teams.

Moving to the sell side is more common. Take the CFA and network and you'll eventually find a seat.

I'm actually in the same boat right now, and I haven't had much luck. For what it's worth, I just spoke with someone at a HF last week who said that they mainly look for people with a banking or ER background (obviously). She was familiar with expert networks too and said that it can be difficult since there's no actual financial analysis done at ENs.

I know something that's worked for people in the past leaving expert networks for more substantial finance positions is doing your own equity research and coming up with full reports that you can present during interviews or to connections you make. At the very least, it shows you have some experience with fundamental analysis and legitimizes you as a candidate.

As someone in the same position, I totally empathize and I'm wishing you the best of luck.
