Top NYC Nightlife/Restaurants/Etc

Off topic to usual posts, but there hasn't been a forum about best clubs/restaurants/lounges/bars in NYC, recently at least. Going to be there for a week or so. Lived in NYC for 2 months in summer of 08 (kiss n fly, pink elephant, etc), but obviously shit changes.

Post away on your favorite restaurants and what you know of hottest clubs.

China Town. Nice and CHEAP! Also tons of cheap little bars around little Italy right next to the c-town in Manhattan.

I'm still a student. So upscale for me would be the sushi bar right next to NYU called Blue Ribbon Sushi and they dont close until 2am.

Im sure your going to get alot of people here trying to show off their knowledge of popular and "impressive" ( and majorly expensive ) places to eat and drink. But for me, popular and impressive are the places that dont require someone like myself to spend alot.

I am a little biased on asian food, but if you like Korean, then go 1 block east from Penn station, there are tons of Korean restaurants there and they are all good. And What I also like is the fact that pink berry is next to all of them so you can grab yourself a 0% fat treat right after you eat. Theres also a couple karaoke bars as well.

You will score significantly more by heading to a bar than going to any of these clubs mentioned. Girls go there to drink your $X00 bottle for free and then bailing after the ego boost. Head to LES, NYU-area, some places on UWS for bars.

Of course, if the 1oak etc is your scene go for it.

Did you ever think that maybe those girls drink your bottles and choose not to put out because you're an ugly fuck with a 2-inch weiner and have no game?? News flash: you won't score at a bar either.

Ha. Overreaction much. Someone dropped a couple of hundo for a bottle and went home to jerk it late night huh? I see plenty of those in your future.

When I need advice on what sort of lotions to buy to keep my skin feeling baby smooth, I will come to you for advice.

All of the nicest clubs get old after you go a few times anyways. It's always the same type of people. If I were you I'd check out the ones I listed (1Oak, Juliet, Greenhouse) just to see what it's like. There also some nice roof top parties... also check out Via Dei Mille (brunch/party) and Stir (bar) both are fun (if you go with friends).

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for this ever since LX.TV took it off YouTube. Know where I can find Richie "Bottles"? That one was pure gold.

If you like more low-key stuff, "mixology" (I hate that term) bars like PDT, Death & Co., Little Branch, Apotheke, Employees Only, and the Raine's Law Room are all pretty good. Kind of expensive, but they have good drinks.

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

I second top of the standard. PE firm I worked for had an awesome party there.

Hiro/Circle if you have certain...tastes lol

What do you think of circle? I've yet to go but heard some interesting things..

Well the problem w the nice places is that you can't just go there and expect to get in... honestly you need to either a) know somebody at the door, b) get bottle service and/or c) roll with a pack of hot girls....

but you have to pay to play right? the expectation in nightlife is that people in finance will bankroll some nights for some of these guys in NYC - figure out who you need to know in NY nightlife (promoter/model/party goer) ASAP and let that person vouch for you at every spot.

shorttheworld:
im so glad i dont deal with all of this NYC club / lounge bullshit anymore

Same here...they can be a lot of fun, but it was always more of a pain in the ass than it was worth.

I'm not a huge "clubber," but I've been in New York long enough to know the spots. Generally Meat Packing District has the highest concentration of "happening" clubs (Tenjune, RDV, Gunbar, Cielo, etc) on any given day of the week. One note of caution - while alot of fun, those clubs can also be more of a hassle to get into with long lines and expensive cover charge, not to mention the expensive drinks once you get in. Generally, I'd advise you going with a "club promoter" who can help provide a smoother experience by getting you past lines quickly and provide deals on drinks (sometimes even free!). I've used this group nycwhiterabbit.com and found their events to be reasonable, although there are lots of other groups out there who can also help your experience.

j-tree. now that takes me back. ha ha.

anyway, i definitely second Angel's Share and nominate:

During the summer I barely paid for food at all b/c SeamlessWeb is the TITS

$25-$50 per meal is way too much. I could get a shitload of food for dinner and still have enough for lunch tomorrow if I didn't feel like going out to grab something. If you're looking to say in shape--as a few people above have mentioned--Energy Kitchen is great and all over the place in Manhattan. The city I live in right now is fairly diverse in terms of ethnic cuisine but NYC blows it absolutely out of the water. Can't wait to go back this summer just for the food...

$50 is probably on the high end most places do $20 or $25 but it can vary depending on weekday/weekend

and even $20 goes a long way as long as you're not buying steak every night. If I ate Chipotle every day I would shit my brains out

Can you explain how Chipotle and omelettes are "slow carbs?" Brown rice instead of White rice, Wheat bread instead of white bread.........that is a "slow carb" thing. Eggs are not carbs and most things you put in omelettes are not slow carbs.

On the slow carb diet you can't have bread/rice/noodles/potatoes. Chipotle and egg-focused foods just happen to be two types of cuisines that don't have 'fast-carbs' in it. Omelettes don't have slow carbs per se, but they are one of the few enjoyable foods left on the diet.

The problem with brown rice and wheat bread is that usually it's just bleached white carbs re-made brown. This process involves HFCS, which is definitely a negative for this diet. Also, the original bleaching process is bad as fuck for your body.

Well if you got $25 allowance for dinner and you can choose from over 300 places...you gonna say fuck getting in shape for a few months. I tried every sushi possible during my internship! After pigging out for a while you do need to find the healthy places and order that salad once in a while.

Do what you want not what you can!

58th and 9th halal cart after 7.

Taim Mobile as it moves through the city spitting delicious falafel everywhere.

THE PLACE in west village (good for a date all local organi blabla)

Kefi on upper west side.

for lunch stuff, tinas/sophies for cuban food

centro vinoteca in west village is good

9th ave in upper hells kitchen area is great for mexican/indian/thai restaurants among others

i can keep going nonstop if you want suggestions.

Whats this I hear about a $25 allowance?

I'm not sure if this really counts as a restaurant but Patsy's pizza is the best pizza I've ever gotten in my life. They were even cool with me being so drunk that I knocked over the first table they got us. Although, the servings weren't as big as I would have liked. The first pie we got was pepperoni and onion, but that was not enough for 2 people, so we had to get a meatball and onion pie next. The total bill was $50.00 something, which I thought was a little high for pizza for two, but then again I'm not used to NYC prices.

I've heard people rave about Grimaldi's Pizza but the line is always long and it looks pretty touristy

For London

-Brick Lane -Spittelfields ( you have anything and everythign there from Carribean, to Falafel which is unreal, salads, sandy's and a lot more) - Also a lot of quality resturants if your taking out clients, gaucho for example, Picolino's is alright - Then you have your standard Miki D's, BK's as well - I like to go to M&S once in a while quality food, good price and fast

- Only time will tell....

GAUCHO! Definitely one of the best Argentinean steak I've ever had...

Homo homini lupus

Chip Shop, saw it on some Food Network program and my friend just went out to NYC, tried it out, and said it was amazing.

Pretty much they're crossing the pond with fish and chips, but they also have deep-fried-just-about-anything. Deep fried candy bars, cheesecake, chocolate cake, etc.

Yea, I'm a fat kid at heart... and more and more on the outside, too bahaha

For London:

Supermarket: Waitrose and M&S are the only good options

Restaurants: Icco (full pizza for 5 GBP, and its good!), Veeraswamy Ken Lo's Memories of China, Automat for good simple American food, Gaucho, Zuma (way better than nobu)

Nobu on berkeley street is a piece of shit. highly disappointing

Fav places in NYC:

One of my personal favorite restaurants is Japanese ramen place called Ippudo. Around $15 but the wait is always a bitch. But worth it in my opinion.

Handsdown best cheap falafel place in NYC is Cheaps. Yeah, sounds unappealing but it's the best $2 ever spent and they make the falafel fresh.

This is a bit far, but a place called Mapo Galbi in Flushings is TO DIE FOR. Best fucking delicious korean BBQ EVER. In my entire life. Just thinking about it right now makes me salivate. A bit pricey but comes with a lot of food and worth it.

Rayuela, Freemans, Peels, 11 Mad park, Public, ABC KItchen, Kenmare, La Esquina, Stanton Social, Corner Bistro, JG Melon's, Fatty Cue, Traif, Fette Sau, Schiller's liquor bar, Peasant...

I could go on forever.

there is a place on 38th and 2nd, called "The Bravest", its a local firefighter bar in Murray Hill, $2.50 budlight bottles at all times, good, and pretty inexpensive bar food. The bartenders there are nice guys and girls, when I interned at barcap last summer I went probably twice a week. Definitely not a spot where you will feel like king of the world, but a great spot if your are looking to crack a few beers, get a burger, watch some tv and not spend 50 dollars while doing it.

TheKing:
PJ Clarke's has the best burger in the world, as far as I'm concerned. Goodburger is good for burgers as well and there are a few in the city.

That is a bold statement. Clarke's is a chain so I think that automatically eliminates it from "best". Corner bistro & Melon's both have great "cheap" burgers. The Blind Pig and Minetta Tavern both have great "high-end" burgers. I really like Zaitzeff, Dumont Burger, and Burger Joint (in Le Meridien, hidden). 5 Napkin Burger is popular amongst my peers; haven't been there yet though.

The REburger at REBAR in Dumbo is actually prolly one of the best burgers ive had in the city and its 8 bucks for lunch with unlimited soda and a side -- i get the mango fennel slaw.

get it correctly done at medium rare and it should be a nice black crust and pure pink inside

pj clarkes ehh -- dont know if id lay that claim. they have good clams casino though, i live near the columbus circle/lincoln square one

TheKing:
Lots of people that take the Path Train are replying to this thread, damn.
Damn, are you even a native NYer??? The guys on the other side of the tunnel and bridges/PATH passengers probably know NY better than any yuppie could ever dream of.

P.S. Born in raised in NY.

I think you can make a reservation there, which I'd recommend. Ask for a window table at the lobby bar. But be prepared: I'm pretty sure a martini is $20-25.

I'm on Amtrak all the time to NYC and Penn Station may be the biggest dump of a train station in this country. It's a dungeon in a crappy part of town. And the only sit down restaurant/bar is an even dumpier Fridays where a beer is $8.

Do you live on LI? If they ever bring the LIRR over to Grand Central it would make for a much more pleasant waiting experience, with the Campbell apartment, oyster bar etc The old Penn Station was just as magnificent as Grand Central, too bad the city planners didn't know any better back then, tore it down and replaced with the current depressing incarnation. We have to thank Donald Trump for helping save and revitalize the Grand Central, back then when he was still a player in NYC Real Estate.

Too late for second-guessing Too late to go back to sleep.

To earn extra money during school, I used to bartend at some MM Bars in Manhattan (think Stumble Inn, Brass Monkey, Gin Mill). When I graduated, the exit ops to the BB Bars weren't as good as I had hoped, so I ended up at my current job.

If you want to meet girls who aren't in finance or aren't interns, take off your suit, get your friends, and go to the Upper East Side or the village, or anywhere far, far away from your office.

Yeah just go by NYU. The whole area is crawling with 20-somethings and the bars are always filled to the brim. I mentioned this on another post about bars but all of these bars are always fun and have good specials. I don't work for them but do enjoy visiting. If that doesn't work, you can always go to bars up and down 3rd ave as there are quite a few between around 20th st and st marks. Have fun.

"You stop being an asshole when it sucks to be you." - IlliniProgrammer

Also avoid places near penn and grand central since the metro and lirr ship the bridge and tunnel crowd in, in BULK on the weekends- most of whom aren't willing (or simply don't know how to) venture very far from where they came in

Edit: I also just remembered this article I came across a couple weeks ago which discussed how there is a trend now-a-days of chicks commuting out of the city to the burbs on the weekends to get laid, lol. It's prob bullshit but semi-relevant nonetheless, so yea.... here. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/you_go_girl_out_to_burbs_f…

Meatpacking, Some Soho, and LES are the main spots. If you plan on clubbing in the Times Square area, you will be sorely disappointed.

If you want to get in to an exclusive club and think "you're the man" go to 1OAK.

Also, because this is a question that has been answered a million times by everyone on the internet...

Anything in Meatpacking District

Lavo is near midtown though. It's pretty shit, in my opinion.

Never heard of that before but it looks great

Copacabana seems right up your alley.

Don't listen to anyone, everybody is scared.

If you want to stay in Hell's Kitchen for whatever reason, Pacha is the only actual club experience there. Also, PH-D in the Dream is a pretty clubby roof lounge, and I find visitors to NYC tend to have a better time there than the big clubs, which tend to be more trouble than they are worth these days.
