What's on your desk ?

I started reading (and comparing) Laura Schreffler's biweekly column "What's on On My Desk ?";

Here is latest entry, featuring the desk of Christiane Kaalund, a partner with HBA/Hirsch Bedner Associates (http://www.hauteliving.com/2013/05/whats-on-my-des...):

1. Notebook
2. A rendering in progress - ready to be marked up
3. Research material in form of a magazine
4. A color/material scheme as inspiration
5. Computer
6. Tea and fruit

April entry: Johnathan Zrihen, the President & CEO of Clarins Groupe North America (http://www.hauteliving.com/2013/04/whats-on-my-des...):

1. Photographs of wife/children.
2. A glass paperweight with a tennis player etched into it.
3. Clarins newest, most innovative, and award-winning Serum.
4. iPad.
5. Clarins recyclable water bottle.

What is on your desk ?

Agree, those who put pictures and family stuff are just showoffs...."look at me, I have kids, I am a responsible person, I will take care of your money." Plllllllease ! Those are usually the ones who have 2 affairs going on at the same time.

I've got a pretty mixed bag in my office. I've definitely got pictures of my girlfriend up (look at me, I am a responsible person!). I've got a few bottles of wine/alcohol that were gifts from deal closings or from third party service providers. I've got a collection of deal tombstones (I'm a nerd - totally obsessed with these things).

In my drawers it gets a little worse -- I keep a stick of deodorant and a bit of cologne in case I'm going straight to dinner. I also store a board game in case we're stuck late in the office waiting for the slacker lawyers/bankers to turn a draft of a document (or in the event we're on a long, boring conference call). I keep a pair of grip strengtheners for a quick workout. Bottle opener if we're popping open a few beers late at night. A Spanish language study guide that I never seem to use.

Lets see... I've got a coffee maker (1 Cup Keureg that I split with 3-4 other people so we could have good, cheap, fresh coffee), a large box of K-Cups and 2 coffee mugs (1 Glass with the Caffeine Molecule on it and the other a ceramic mug from my Alma Mater) that sit on top of my desk. I have a Football schedule on my desk as well, so I know my team's Saturday Schedule. There's that and then ususal clutter of paper, pens and my own TI Financial Calculator to use.

In my drawers, well... it depends on the drawer. I keep one filled with a stack of paper plates, plastic silverware, napkins, ketchup and mustard packets that kinda just accumulate from when we order in, Crystal Light Iced Tea mix (gotta have something besides Coffee and Water) and straws. It's not that I'm a hoarder or anything, but you'd be surprised at how usefull having the extras and spares can be or if you don't feel like eating food out of a carton, it's nice to enjoy it on a plate.

The other drawer I have is filled with a toiletry bag containing Contact Solution, a spare pair of lenses, glasses cleaner, Tylenol, Claratin, a small first aid kit, Hydrogen Peroxide, Neosporin, a multi vitamin, a toothbush and toothpaste, a spare phone charger (either a USB-Mini cable or an actual charger... depends on the day.. ), and a spare set of keys.

While it may seem like alot, it's actually not as much as you might think that I would actually take with me if I got laid off.

tombstones and alcohol are the two true staples... I like to keep a mini checkers board, a few cigars and a few varieties of cigs as well though. I don't smoke much at all (3-5 cigs per week), but you need them around the office for meetings and business dinners and all that (it's china). Apparently when I really get annoyed by something an MD tells me to do I go write out on the balcony and light up in the middle of the work day and smoke that shit super-slow (that's as far as I go in terms of fighting than man).

I wouldn't buy your own chair ... you'll look like the biggest tool rolling it into the office and up the elevator. Personally, I keep my IPOD, a toothbrush etc., a complete change of work clothes, a sweater (it is freezing on the weekend), an extra briefcase in case i want to bring stuff home and work there, and various other things. I bought a "pencil holder" of sorts that helps keep paper clips and the like organized. All of this stuff is pretty key as I don't need to go home for anything.

CompBanker:

I wouldn't buy your own chair ... you'll look like the biggest tool rolling it into the office and up the elevator.

ROTFL!

I have floss, extra work socks (whatever those knee high tights are called), regular tights (I'm a girl), purple and black flats (I wear sneakers to work then change), loose change, mouthwash, sewing kit, lip gloss, blush and that is about it.

Sep 14, 2017

Sep 14, 2017

Clip fan. Keeps you cool and awake.

Laptop stand. Stands your laptop vertically so that the screen is closer to eye level.

Computer speakers. For rocking out at 2 in the morning.

Sep 14, 2017

First off...you do not bring anything you buy it, besides an ipod and personal hygiene stuffon company tab when you're there. Also, if you bring your own chair I would hope you got fired. What you need is a toothbrush, tide pen to fight stains, sneakers, gym clothes, also brooks brothers has this button replacement thing it is great because one time I hit the button between my cuff and shoulder on a button down by hitting it on my desk and it helped me cos I had a pitch that day.

Sep 13, 2017

Forgot about my tide pen. That thing rocks (i whipped it out one day and saved my MD's shirt, he had never heard of it before).

Sep 14, 2017

I dont lie.

Sep 14, 2017

The Tide pen is so clutch. It has saved me many times.
My desk: Tide pen, set of dress clothes, set of street clothes, deoderant, gym clothes/shower kit, toothbrush/paste, Mp3 player.

Sep 14, 2017

I hope anyone saying they wear sneakers to work does not pee standing up.

Whenever I see a guy doing that I actually laugh out loud at how ridiculous it looks.

Certainly need
Tide Pen
computer speakers are great
keep all your chargers at work. Charging a phone at home is a little optimistic
purell
abacus
spare ties in case you stain one and the tide pen fails you

Either you sling crack rock or you got a wicked jump shot

Sep 14, 2017

Eye drops for those days your eyes get all red from looking at the screen too long. Ah....I heart those days.

anyone buy their own monitor?

Sep 14, 2017

Why on earth would you buy your own monitor? Just break it and tell the tech dept to get you a new one (provided you have a semi-functional spare to tide you over, since it's guaranteed to take them two weeks to requisition you a new one).

Sep 14, 2017

because the monitors at work are quite small... and cause a lot of eyestrain, esp for large ppt and excel files... is it so odd to blow a few hundred on a larger and better monitor?

Sep 14, 2017

Well I said that because I have 2 20" LCD flat screens provided to me.

I am guessing tushy wipes are just slang for wet wipes, but (s)he uses them specifically for their ass. I, for one, would never take a shit in a public restroom unless I had wet wipes or a shower nearby. That Andy quote from Parks & Rec truly applies to me ("I'll wipe, and I'll wipe, and I'll wipe...a hundred times. Still poop. It's like I'm wiping a marker or something.").

Didn't realize Adderall was a popular desk item. Looks like I know where I'm getting my next prescription.

Sep 14, 2017

I would make sure I have some stationery items like push pins, paper clips, markers, pens, staplers, paper- weight, glue, writing pad etc inside my desk.
