NATTY LIGHT, BITCHES

For real though, I'm not really a beer connoisseur, but I like Spotted Cow (brewed in New Glarus, WI). I also enjoy Capital Brewery's Oktoberfest, but they only brew it in the fall. I don't know how available either are outside of southern Wisconsin though.

+1 for Spotted Cow, it's simply one of, if not the best, beer I've ever had. However, since I do not live in WI, my beer of choice is Guinness.

If we're talking Kegs, gotta be Busch Lite.

I was just going to post that the best is Spotted Cow, but that I doubt anyone knew what it was!

I'm not super picky about my beers and I actually don't care for the heavier beers all that much.

When getting beer I generally follow this order: Spotted Cow (#1 by a long shot) then Hacker-Pschorr (spelling?), Leinenkugels depending on the seasonal, Sam Adam's seasonals, blue moon, maybe a 312 and then just Miller Lite.

Spotted Cow is only licensed in WI. I guess a while back they sold in a few places in Chi, but at this point they are only WI. A buddy of mine had an mba group who had to do a consulting project for class and they tried to consult the New Glarus brewery. They offered to do all the research and determine if it would be beneficial for them to extend beyond WI. He said the owners were complete a-holes and wouldn't even consider it and basically hung up on him.

Lucky for me the father in law is an AVP of sales at a pharm company and often makes trips into WI - always brings me back a case of Spotted Cow.

Guinness if I'm in a bar and they pour a decent pint (in other words, their Guinness lines aren't so clogged with bacteria from disuse that you come away with a staph infection).

At home, Boddington's, anything from Abita (especially Jock-Imo or Purple Haze), and Sierra Nevada.

For awhile, Dixie made a beer called Blackened Voodoo. They still might, I don't know. But it was pretty fantastic for those who like dark beers like me.

Oh, and Natty Light, of course. Goes without saying.

Midas Mulligan Magoo:
Left Hand Milk Stout is the move for dark beer drinkers. Not easy to find. Beck's Dark is a good alternative, but rarely found in bars. St. Bernardus is nice, but a bit on the pricey side. If you're in the northern states, see about snatching some Molson Golden (made in Canada), it'll pack a few extra alco points.

Def agree on the Left Hand. It's excellent, and I don't really even like dark beers that much.

Yuengling and Fat Tire are always safe bets when you don't want to drink Bud Light. Stella's not bad either.

If I can find it (usually only in Charlotte) Red Oak is my favorite beer of all time.

Red Oak is fantastic. It is brewed not too far away from where I went to school. Warning, if you get trashed on Red Oak, you will have the smelliest shit the next day.

My vote is Yuengling then Red Oak.

Agreed, Red Oak is stellar. It's definitely not for getting trashed on though, have a couple then switch to water-beer (Coors Light, Bud Light, etc). Agree on the digestive system comment.

I drink American beers. I like Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, and Yuengling.

A lot of people I knew studied abroad last semester and all of them came back acting like total cunts talking about all these craft European beers and talking about how Stella is shitty and that only Americans think its good. To be honest, I enjoy most beers (including Stella) but I hated how these pompous assholes tried to put me down because I knew nothing about European beers. Fuck that, this is America, drink American beer, support the American economy, and help in the fight against pompous assholes everywhere who think they are better than everyone else because they know some obscure European beer brand (haha sorry for the rant).

This bugs me too. There are SO many micro-breweries in America. If you're going to be a beer snob, at least be loyal to your home country. If you look around, we make stronger, darker, and more creative beers than anyone across the pond anyway.

Btw, I'm going to plug it again, if you like really thick, dark, but smooth beer check this out: http://www.ratebeer.com/beer/el-toro-negro-oatmeal-stout/7569/

It's made out of California, but I've been able to find it elsewhere.

Sir... There are some great ales from Maine and pretty decent microbrews from MA, ME or VT out there though, but obviously that is neither what you drink nor what you're talking about. Education and travel would get you further.

Leinenkugel and Blue Moon for me. I will have to check into trying this Spotted Cow you guys speak of.

Regards

Great Lakes Burning River IPA, Great Lakes Commodore Perry, Old Rasputin, Chimay Blue, Guinness, Stella (only on tap), Fat Tire, and any of the random-ass micro brew IPAs you find in niche liquor stores and gormet food groceries.

my brother is a finance manager at AbInbev, you cant imagine the insane amount of free beer he gets... also they have a free bar in their building with guitar hero and other stuff like that, they usually go to the bar, drink, then go back to work, also he gets to invite anyone he wants, he has become the most popular guy with his friends... i dont like beer that much (more of a vodka and wine guy, except for those hot summers when you need a real cold artois)...

I am still a college student with no disposable income, so I enjoy Pabst Blue Ribbon for drunk driving (favorite drinking game) and Natty Light for pong.

Blue Moon and Goose Island (Chicago micro) are delicious.

Stone Brewing Company never lets me down, and I especially love their Imperial Russian Stout. Recently I've gotten hold of some Lost Abbey beers (hard to find outside the West Coast), and I think they're amazing. Also some of the best artwork (along with Unibroue beers of course) I've ever seen for beer label design.

Best Response

Now this is what I call a topic.... First and foremost, I don't drink Stella. I think it's the Belgian Equivalent of Pisswiser and find the beer to be god awful. There's amazing beer from around the world that beats the snot out of it (both from Europe and the US).

I don't have a favorite, there are so many damn good breweries out there, so, I'm gonna throw out a number of breweries that I've enjoyed and some of the beers they make. Just to reiterate a few, Stone Brewing Company, Left Hand (I'm drinking the Oktoberfest Marzen as we speak); Abita and Dixie are fantastic. I gotta second the recommendation for the Blackened Voodoo.

Here are a few breweries that I like that are worth checking out...

Boulder Brewing Company Lagunitas Flying Dog Breweries - Fun Fact: All of the artwork used by Flying Dog was drawn by Hunter S. Thompson's collaborator Ralph Steadman. Dogfish Head Great Divide Rouge DeShutes Brewery Victory Troegs Weyerbacher Brooklyn Long Trails CBA (Craft Brewers Alliance) - Joint-Merger between Red Hook and Weidmer Breweries Allagash Russian River Bear Republic Defiant Harpoon Founders Oskar Blues Sly Fox New Holland Anchor Steam

I think that's a good list to start with.

And no, we don't make the most creative beers on earth. Our most creative beer is only about 25% ABV and is served in a copper bottle. Their most creative beer is 55% ABV and comes delivered being held in a stuffed kilt wearing stoat. Now that's creative! Honestly, the Eurobeer v US Beer debate comes down to whether you want a much more traditional style like Belgian Beer and most European Brewers or whether you want to try something you don't normally have.

Someone finally mentioned Anchor Steam. I forgot all about it, but it is a really great beer, and has a fantastic story behind it.

Fritz Maytag, heir to the Maytag appliance fortune, bought a bankrupt brewery in San Francisco and decided to make his own beer. As he plowed the bulk of his family fortune into the endeavor, he got no support from his family and friends. In fact, they even had him involuntarily committed at one point. Everyone told him it would never work and that he was insane.

He proved them all wrong by producing a truly excellent beer (Anchor Steam), and was one of the very first microbrewers in America. If you've never had one, try it out. It doesn't have a cute label or a catchy name, but it is one of the best American beers made and is available just about everywhere.

Guinness is my personal favorite. Anything by the Heavy Seas brewery. Had about 8 of their new brew "Hang Ten" the other night, 10% strong yea c'mon. Anchor Steam, Goose Island, Sweetwater, Paulaner, etc. There's too many good ones.

Anyone who wrote Stella is a total tool. That beer, along with Heinekin, is the skunkiest shit ever. I would rather drink period blood.

Bud Heavy is the way to go. St. Louis born and bred right here, so gotta go with the home town brew (even though its technically not St. Louis owned anymore, I still basically grew up with Budweiser in the baby bottle.)

You know, I can enjoy a Blue Moon, but I'm not a big fan of it. It's one of the few beers by a Big 3 Brewer that I like (Blue Moon Brewery is owned by Molson Coors). Rolling Rock, despite my dislike of the beer, and Landshark are both great Anheuser-Busch-owed breweries as well.

Dos Equis is good too. I like the Amber over the Lager, but that's just me.

Whoever said Magic Hat was right on as well. Very good beer with light notes of apricot. I have a few foreign selections to add to the list and one great domestic that I both love to drink and despise that it is extremely hard to find in the NYC area....

The Domestic is Kona Brewing Company. How could I forget KBC. They have an outstanding limited edition porter brewed with Kona Coffee Beans that is too die for.

As for foreign beers, here are a couple of quality breweries worth checking out as well... Westmalle - Particuarly the Double Rochfort - The 6 and 8 are fantastic Huyghe Brewery - They make Delerium Tremens, Nocturne and Noel. Worth trying at least once if you like Belgian Golden Ales Westvleteren Brewery - My god, this is my ATF Belgian Brewery. If you can get the 8 or the 12, you will love it. Rodenbach - Reserve Grand Cru is the way I'm sure someone already said St. Bernedus and Chimay, so I'm just going to second those recos as well.

I second the comments about Stella and Heineken... they're below average brews that are perceived to be good beer in part because they're imported and in part because people use Bud Light, Miller Light, and Coors Light as points of reference for comparison.

Here's a handful of excellent breweries and some of beers by brewery:

  • Dogfishhead (Indian Brown Ale, 90 Minute IPA, 60 Minute IPA, Raison D'Etre)
  • Bell's (Oberon, Third Coast Beer, Two Hearted Ale)
  • Brooklyn Brewery
  • Anchor Steam
  • New Holland Brewery

See, that's what I like about the smaller-batch domestics like Yuengling, Leinenkugel's, PBR, and Saranac. You can drink them at a highbrow party or you can serve them up over burgers and brats. This is assuming that you've got the taste buds of a 25 year old. (I thought this stuff was bitter and awful when I was 21).

Also, if you drink light beer, that's fine, but don't call folks who drink lager pansies just because they drink something with more alcohol per pint.

Diet beer huh. let me ask you this... have you ever had alcohol?

Yes

Also, if you drink light beer, that's fine, but don't call folks who drink lager pansies just because they drink something with more alcohol per pint.

Exactly. I'm not above drinking light beer when I'm out all night or watching a game all day and am trying to avoid getting too drunk or hungover, but if I want something with better taste and much higher alcohol content, then I'd much rather have a craft beer.

Fave widely available beer - Newcastle

Otherwise too many craft beers to list. I'm partial to Kroghs Oatmeal Stout (Kroghs Brew Pub, Sparta NJ). Blue Point Toasted Lager that has been popping up more NYC bars is pretty good, great as an alternative to the usual Bud,Coors, amstel, Stella etc......

If you really like beer, than this is a kind of strange question. I like different beers for different things.

My favorite beer to get sh*tfaced at a bar is Bud Light, though I am coming to appreciate PBR lately. My favorite "value" quality beer is Yuengling, its good, and generally really cheap. If I am eating dinner or not really planning on having more than a few, Sierra Nevada Pale ale is my #1. Though close runners up are Killian's Irish Red, Saranac, or really any pale ale.

To narrow it down, by volume I drink bud light the most. But Sierra Nevada is my favorite tasty beer.

I do agree with your first statement.

Sorry for the Double Post (I forgot to comment on Muskrateer's comment).... but I gotta second his suggestion about what you can find in Maine. I just picked up a 6-pack of Gritty's Halloween Ale. It's the first time I tried the Maine brewer after hearing good things about them and I am looking forward to trying more. The Halloween is a very nice ESB.

The Yard House claims to have the largest selection of draft beer in the world (100+), nice variety if you have the chance to go.

Monty09 and I lifted a few at Lager's over the holidays, and they've got over 100 on draught. We were into the Abita Christmas Ale pretty heavy.

@MattTheTiger- Abita is the cat's ass. I don't know if you ate in the brewpub after the tour, but that's some of the best food on the Northshore. Their boudin quail is like nothing I've found anywhere else. Easily the best burgers on the Northshore as well. Plus all that glorious Abita beer.

petergibbons:
Dogfish Head 60 min IPA, Long Trail Belgian White & Blackberry Wheat, Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter

Rolling Rock when I was broke in college...

Props man, Dogfish head is great-I prefer 90 minute but 60 minute is great-hoppy as hell. I just started brewing my own beer and can't get the IPA down perfectly but have brewed a great octoberfest and belgian wheat.

MissLou, I'll take your Toohey's Extra Dry and raise you a Victoria Bitters. It's my preferred beer for watching rugby while drinking.

Noway, move on from Carlsberg to Tuborg. It's soo much nicer.

Eddie, I love Abita, great stuff all around, but I'm a HUGE fan of Dixie Brewing. Their Blackened Voodoo Lager is still one of my favorites.

VB is not a bad drop, I like it. And speaking of Rugby, I can't wait for the season to start. Are you into Union or League ? I'm certainly looking forward to the Rugby World Cup this year too.

I'm a huge NRL guy. I got turned onto it while spending time in Melbourne visiting friends during the summer a few years back. It also doesn't hurt that the NRL is all we get stateside outside of the Tri-Nation.

And if I can find it here, I'll take a James Boags as well.

Boags is bloody nice too. At one point that was all I'd drink.

Surprised so many of you know about Red Oak, it's an excellent beer and one of my favorites. With so many beers its hard to pick a favorite but I enjoy Red Oak, Shock Top, Fat Tire, Red Stripe, Sweetwater 420, Gordon Biersch Blond Bock, and you can't go wrong with a Black & Tan. Of course I love Bud busch coors natty keystone etc lights. I really enjoyed the Bud Light Wheat.

I love beer but when I go out I prefer to start my nights with old grand dad.

I'm a fan of the Melbourne Storm. It kinda just fell into place hanging while hanging out with my friends. I caught Rounds 22, 23 and 24 when I was there so I got exposed to alot of games in a short period of time. Didn't get to see any games live though.

Melbourne Storm are a talented team. I was sad to see all their points stripped off them due to the Salary Cap breach. Ended up being wooden spooners. Next time you're in Oz I recommend you go to a game, Best day out you can have.

Franziskaner hefeweizen, or any other German wheat.

Yes! Those German wheat beers are outstanding! I can also recommend Westmalle Dubbel, or Wolf 7. (though not German wheat beers)

Dogfish Head, now I miss home. And berry wiess is definitely a chick beer.

The fact that it made the list AT ALL is really the only major issue I can raise with that map. Every other beer on that list that I've tried has been very good to excellent. Landshark is a trussed-up Corona.

Some people will make fun of me, but I don't really care. My favorite beer is Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy.

Oh hell yeah.

If not that, my go to is Heineken. I have no idea why, I just enjoy it. IPA is nice sometimes, and I'm not picky.

Get busy living

Lil' Sumpin is very solid. My other favorites:

Arbor Brewing Co. - Ypsi Gypsi - #1 beer I've had Bell's - Two Hearted - close #2 and much easier to find Basically anything from Half-Acre - Senita esp good IPA Basically anything from Revolution - get Fistmas Ale in the winter while you can find it Yuengling for anytime

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

@"Cruncharoo" Good choices on A Lil' Sumpin Sumpin, Bells and the Yuenger.

Go for A Lil' Sumpin Extra next time. Always a good choice.

@"HoyaSaxa1789", seriously? Heady Topper? Heady Topper's an overrated beer that every snob claims to love because it's impossible to get. Seeing as Alchemist doesn't want to sell out of a 25 mile radius from Waterbury, people have to travel to get it, giving it some mythic status. I've had it both in the can and on tap and it's good but I've had better.

@OP, depends on my mood and what's available. I'm not one to play favorites with my beer selection.

Each to his own. I do enjoy the beer, but I can see how someone could prefer others over it. Being that I have close ties to Vermont, I am fortunate enough to have access to cases of it. But I certainly respect your point of view.

I also forgot Alpha King and Zombie Dust from Three Floyd's but I think everyone has heard of those because Three Floyd's is the most talked about brewery ever.

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

I took a vacation to Tampa earlier this year with my girlfriend, and Cigar City was the first place we stopped. Everything they make is delicious. I drank Jai Alai on draft everywhere like it was water! Fine from a can, but turns into absolute nectar from the tap.

I haven't gotten into craft beer for quite a while, but I do like regional beers and the smaller national brands. My favorites:

-Port City Optimal Wit -Shocktop -Blue Moon -Sweetwater Blue

That said, I'm planning on making my own beer and mead, starting this spring. I'm going to start off with a variety of witbier, but haven't decided which exact recipe I'll try.

When I was in New York recently, I had a Green Flash, East village Lager. I am German so I know my beers. I thought it was very decent. Did only find it one bar though. If you are located in New York go eat at the spotted pig and have a Ayinger Weißbier to your Burger. It is the most delicious beer of them all and even in Germany hard to find since it is kinda small batch and home to a small bavarian town.
