An embarrassing situation!

OK, So, I start at a London BB in a couple of months. When I start, as part of my comps, I get private healthcare. I currently need to get an operation done (circumcision) for medical reasons. Do I wait until I start, then get it done in my training period (when life is a little easier), or what? I live in the UK, and I can't get it done on the NHS before my start date, so either way it needs doing whilst I'm at work, but I'm nervous about starting then asking for the private medical treatment straight away. It's a day surgery operation, so I could be back at work the next day. If I can do this - do I have to tell HR or anyone what I'm having done? Or do I just ask to see a doctor, and it's all confidential? It's embarassing and I don't want my career to start off by being labelled as the guy who had to get his junk fixed. But at the same time, it needs doing, and going private is the nicest and fastest way of getting it done. I anticipate getting mocked to death for this post, but any serious constructive advice would be really appreciated.

  1. If your insurance starts with the job, would this not be a "pre-existing condition" and thus not paid by insurer?

  2. Is it something you can hold off till the end of your training period? Missing the training might not be a great idea

  3. if it has to be done, it has to be done. I doubt anyone apart from HR/MD/staffer on your team would get to hear any details about it ("medical reasons" is normally sufficient). And those guys would be the last to mock you for getting your "junk fixed" or whatever.

No big deal and I wouldn't think too much about it...

A buddy of mine had it done at the insistence of his girlfriend, and you're crazy if you think you're going to be back to work the next day. He was laid up for a week. Stitches, swelling, your junk is going to be all you can think about for several days after. Better to schedule before your start or after.

Erm, well it is a pre-existing condition i guess - but one that i put on my pre-start health questionaire so should be covered.

I could wait, but I can't 'use it' until I get it sorted, and naturally, I'd like to use it sooner rather than 6 months down the line!

You guys think it's better to get it done post training once I'm actually on the desk rather than during training. Didn't know which would be more deteremental.

Yup do it. Emphasise that its a delacate matter and if their HR department is professional then they will not breach confidentiality. Do not tell your peers/manager the exact procedure. make it up if you have to. Make it sound really tragic. ie: you were a burn victim and need to have the last of your scabbing removed or something. Only HR should know what the real deal is.
