To break into IB with a less-than-ideal A-level performance, you'll need to focus on building a strong profile and overcoming the initial disadvantage. Here's a roadmap based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Address Your Grades Strategically

  • Extenuating Circumstances: Be prepared to explain your BBD grades during applications or interviews. Many firms are understanding if you can articulate your story well and demonstrate resilience.
  • University Performance: Focus on achieving a stellar GPA at Leeds. A strong university performance can help offset weaker A-levels.

2. Maximize University Resources

  • Networking: Start building connections early. Reach out to alumni from Leeds who are in IB or related fields. Use LinkedIn and university career services to identify potential mentors.
  • Pre-Professional Clubs: Join finance or investment societies at Leeds. Leadership roles or active participation in these clubs can demonstrate your interest and commitment to IB.
  • Spring Weeks: While your A-levels might be a hurdle, some firms are more flexible. Apply widely and tailor your applications to highlight your strengths, such as resilience, work ethic, and any relevant skills.

3. Build Relevant Experience

  • Spring Weeks: Even if you face rejections initially, keep applying. Some firms may overlook grades if you have a compelling story and strong application.
  • Alternative Internships: If Spring Weeks don’t work out, consider internships in related fields like asset management, Big 4 valuations, or corporate banking. These roles can serve as stepping stones to IB.
  • Extracurricular Projects: Engage in activities like student investment funds, case competitions, or personal finance projects to showcase your interest in finance.

4. Develop Technical Skills

  • Self-Learning: Use resources like WSO’s Financial Modeling and Excel courses to build technical skills. Highlight these on your CV to show initiative.
  • Certifications: Consider pursuing certifications like CFA Level 1 or online courses in finance to strengthen your profile.

5. Craft a Strong Narrative

  • Your story matters. Frame your journey as one of overcoming challenges and demonstrating resilience. Highlight how your unique background and skills make you a strong candidate for IB.

6. Consider Long-Term Strategies

  • If breaking into IB directly proves challenging, explore related roles (e.g., Big 4 M&A, corporate banking) and plan to lateral into IB after gaining experience.
  • Pursue a master’s degree at a target school (e.g., LSE, RSM) to reset your academic profile and improve your chances.

Remember, many professionals in IB have non-linear paths. With determination, strategic planning, and consistent effort, you can still achieve your goal.

I did resit my d grade it was physics but I just came out with the same grade 3 marks off the next grade  I cannot do physics for the life of me but other than that the fees to resit all 3 would be at least 2k which I’m not in a position to pay for because I had to pay for predicted grades too

Don't take this the wrong way but there are hundreds of 3A*+ students who cant break into ib, try considering a different career

it seems brutal, i tried hard for my a levels and only managed to get A* A A and into a decent semi target for econ. Then you look at the competition and realise there are people with 3-4 A*s who still can't break into IB. Makes you wonder how realistic it actually is
