BB Dresscode
Going to be starting at Barclays end of summer. What's the dresscode generally (pre-covid). Do people still wear suit and tie everyday?

This is all pre-COVID and for New York. We flipped to business casual for day to day, so suit pants and button-up every day. I’d have a jacket and a couple ties at your desk for meetings but definitely don’t need to wear them every day. When it gets colder, you’ll see a decent number of vests and quarter-zips. There’s a touch of variation across the groups but shouldn’t be too crazy. There’s also a CT store on the ground floor so you can always grab a shirt, tie, belt, etc quickly.
If you’re in tech coverage, shorts and tee shirts should be fine. Flip flops too as long as you have a Patagonia jacket.
More seriously, suit pants (or even chino pants) and shirt is fine. I haven’t put a tie on since I started, and brought a suit jacket to the office exactly twice.
Is this in NYC or SF?
London. Juniors just don’t wear suit jackets at work
Not sure why this dumb question gets asked every single year.
First day, wear a full suit and tie, there is literally no harm in over-dressing and also gives off a good impression to senior bankers.
After your first day you'll know what the general accepted attire is at your group and so from day 2 (or week 2) you can skip the suit jacket/tie.
Not sure that wearing a suit and tie on the first day is a good idea? My group would think you’re a boner.
Definitely wear shirt and suit pants, bring a jacket over your arm and have a tie in your bag?
I would treat your first day like an interview. Wear a suit and tie. First impressions are extremely important. If you are over dressed, people will understand, and you can adjust your dress code according after day 2. However, if you are underdressed, people might view it as disrespectful and entitled. Most places are more casual now, but some groups are a bit more formal and taking your tie off is something you have to earn.
hardo alert!
i wouldnt even notice what a new analyst wore their first day or if they had a tie on
just dont dress like a weird FOB or something (pointy shoes, black slacks, too tight shirt).
Don’t agree,he can wear a tie on the first day. Doesn’t matter though, people may not even see him on first day..
I think its hardo too, but some groups are just like this. An incoming first year unfortunately has no say on the group's stance on dresscode.
Make sure not to shower for a few weeks beforehand. should impress your MD's.
I had worn a button down and dress pants for most of the time, but switched to bonobos/lulu pants near the end of Pre-COVID. Strongly recommend.
Dresscode is ripe for disruption and I pray for the day it becomes smart casual
Maybe this is showing my age (or lack thereof) but could you please explain what smart casual means? In my mind it's pretty much the same as business casual - so button up (not formal dress shirt) and chinos or khakis - but honestly unsure about any of these titles beyond business attire lol
There are probably multiple interpretations but to me smart casual is a little less conservative while having a lot of the same foundational clothing pieces as business casual. What that means more practically is that I would feel more comfortable integrating more colours, patterns and textiles with smart casual. Plaids, corduroys, pastels, etc are more at home with smart casual than with business casual imo. Overall, with smart casual, think beyond just ditching the jacket and tie.
Not Barclays but also business casual at my bank. Everyone wears dress shirts and lulu commission pants.
Actually? Not to turn this to a lulu-thread, but I always figured slim "athletic"-ish pants were generally frowned upon. Unless these are the classic fit, but then those just basically become the ABC pants right?
The commission pants are the ones without the Jeans-like back pockets. They are slim fit but they’re not that tight, similar to chinos. My friend at cs wears the same thing to work so it’s not just my bank either
