Best exits for PE partner track

trying to figure out what banking groups give you the best chance to making partner at a PE firm.

I am a sophomore trying to choose between internship offers between FIG at a Tier 1 Bank (think GS/MS) vs. HC at a Tier 2 Bank (think BAML/Citi).

Which of these groups would give me opportunities at PE firms that view new hires as potential partners, as opposed to having just a 2 year commitment?

Thanks for the advice and happy to answer any more questions.

Thousands of things have to go right over a period of many years to make partner at any PE firm. No specific group will automatically throw you onto a partner track. That said, making partner at a MF is considerably harder than at a MM, so you could look into historical group exits and see if one seems more connected to solid MM shops than the other.

However, as a sophomore, you could easily switch groups for junior SA, so I'd look even more broadly across the banks you have offers from. For example, I know GPUG at MS has solid PE exits to MFs, UMMs, and solid MMs, so you could always do FIG as a sophomore and aim to swap into a group like that for junior year.

GS/JPM are the top in FIG with MS, Citi, Barclays coming after

JPM is top in HC with GS, MS, Barclays, Baml coming after

GS FIG > BAML HC > MS FIG > Citi HC
