Cap markets to IB, is there hope

Need advice guys. I really want to switch groups at my same bank after my sa. I’m in a cap markets group and really want to be on the M&A side of things. Is it possible to switch groups at the same bank or am I cooked. My group does growth equity advisory but I want to be able to have access to buyout pe exit opps. How hard is it to break into M&A from my current position, even if I have to switch banks- I’m at a MM.

Based on previous WSO threads, transitioning from a capital markets group to M&A within the same bank or even at a different bank is feasible. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Internal Transfer:

    • It's possible to switch groups within the same bank. Networking internally and expressing your interest to the right people can help facilitate this move.
    • Demonstrate your interest and capability in M&A by seeking out projects or tasks that align more closely with M&A work.
  2. Skill Transferability:

    • Skills from capital markets, especially if your group does growth equity advisory, are transferable to M&A. Highlight these skills in your discussions and applications.
  3. Networking:

    • Leverage your network both within and outside your current bank. Building relationships with professionals in the M&A space can open up opportunities and provide valuable insights.
  4. Exit Opportunities:

    • Moving to M&A can indeed provide better access to buyout PE exit opportunities. M&A experience is highly valued in the private equity space.
  5. Switching Banks:

    • If an internal transfer is not possible, consider applying to M&A roles at other banks. Your experience in capital markets, particularly in growth equity advisory, will still be relevant and valuable.

In summary, while it may require effort and strategic networking, transitioning from a capital markets group to M&A is definitely achievable.
