Director wants to meet me for drinks but I am not fully vaccinated yet

I just came back to NYC. The director knows I just got my first Covid shot last week, but she sent me an invite for drinks with her and a few others. I think it will look bad if I decline but I am concerned about the virus. What should I do?

Are you really that scared of this virus? I’m sorry, but I just can’t understand this. You already had one shot which should give you peace of mind.

If I could give you 1M bananas I would. I've had Covid and I fully understand it's different for each individual. However, the symptoms I experienced were that of a mild sinus infection. Let's move past this shit and get on with our lives.

while i agree with young people its generally fine, ive had multiple family members/family friends who were in their late 30s, early 40s literally die from covid. everyone is free to practice whatever safety protocol they wish these days and if that means not giving a fuck, cool I dont care your life bro.

But to judge someone for taking the safer step of avoiding a virus that has, media panic or not, caused widespread death is one of the most low IQ things ive ever seen. plus the statistics of the delta variant are much less favorable and guess what just landed in the states pal! do your own thing but stop judging others for being safe dumbass

Hey make sure to use air travel, don’t walk in the streets where all the normal people are. Too much of a risk.

By this, I mean try to stay inside 24/7 unless you can levitate. Additionally, consider teleportation for getting around the city so you don’t get into an accident.

Finally make sure to burn your food until it is charcoal in order to get rid of all potential infections.

Because I wasn’t sure about trusting the vaccine initially. And then my family members, who were just as skeptical initially, decided to get the vaccine and my younger brothers did too. Then, I eventually caved.

Controversial

I understand you have a pharmaceutical and virology expertise that made you 'not being sure about trusting the vaccine'?

Or are you also skeptical when crossing a bridge, thinking "I am not sure if I can trust engineers who built this bridge"?

Because if not, then you're a fucking tool, have no respect to science and I'm sorry but I can't stand people like this.

Of course you should do it! No offense but I can’t believe people like you exist lol. Actually think through the risk-reward profile of this one... what are the odds you get serious COVID-19 from this one (very important) interaction with one jab? Probably like 0.000001%. Cases have declined dramatically, one vaccine offers pretty effective protection, don’t be a pussy and do it

sure but this is basically the same as not flying somewhere because you’re scared of flying. Seriously bad look for OP

I disagree.

If some people aren't comfortable, then they aren't comfortable. A director is probably 35 years old, I doubt they will hold it against anyone (if you're at a firm where the people aren't hardos).

dude being scared of catching COVID-19 is not the same thing as being scared of flying lol. not trying to get political but the pandemic has shut down the world for over a year for a reason...

Since the media brainwashed the public by giving them doom porn 24/7. Same reason people think there is a gun violence "epidemic." When you look at gun deaths (murders only not suicides), it's like 15000 a year, which is very comparable to drunk driving deaths of around 9000-11000. No one ever asks for car control though. It's all whatever serves the mainstream narrative.

Also, if guns are made illegal criminals will still find a way to get a hold the guns. Such a law only punishes law abiding citizens and gives criminals an upper hand. I would expect gun related violence deaths to actually rise if gun control was implemented.

Ignore the other comments telling you to stop being a pussy. I understand if you're uncomfortable, but imo it sounds like a low-risk environment. Assuming the director and other coworkers are already vaccinated, you're already at a lower-risk of getting it from them. On top of that you have a layer of protection from your first dose. You could also wear a mask when you're at the bar walking around or something. If you're paranoid about it, just get tested a few days after the hangout.

I don't think it'll be the end of your career or anything if you express concern about COVID tho. So if you're really not feeling it, just say that you'd prefer to wait until your second vaccine and aren't comfortable right now. They should be understanding.

I don’t utilize CNN. I utilize common sense, which many people here don’t have. Hence why there are so many idiots in finance doing more harm than good

Unless you have a commorbidity or you're old there is litteraly no significant risk for you. Vaccines (even first doses) protect you from death and serious consequences in like 95% of cases.

Nothing wrong with not wanting to go but it's just not rational based on the numbers.

Man this forum is salty sometimes. I'm literally in the exact same position. Just spoke to the guy that I'm catching up with and was like FYI - I've only had one shot so far, is that ok with you? Happy to catch up outdoors if preferable or we can just postpone for a few weeks. In all likelihood, the MD probably won't give a shit. Mine basically said he was happy to catch up a week after the first.

What a complete pussy. Get a different job you won’t make it. Can’t stand young people acting as if they’re scared of a virus that has a lower % chance of killing you than getting the bus to work. Also please don’t say you’re scared about hurting others bruh you’re going iB you complete disgrace. Mugglewamp prick

I kinda felt bad for you after reading this thread. This comment confirms it though: You’re a total pussy

Yep, and you could drop dead from an aneurysm any second. If going out for drinks in 2021 after having been vaccinated makes you uncomfortable how on earth are you going to be able to handle what’s going to be asked of you as an analyst?

“No sorry Senior MD, I don’t think I can price update the book because I’m really tired and feel unwell. The client CEO will have to wait another day to announce the txn, but he/she will understand I’m sure”

Bruh it's fucking COVID not smallpox or a human plague. If you're in your early 20s, you have a higher chance of dying from a car crash on the way to meet the MD. Stop being a scared bitch and put down the fear mongering doom porn news. Plus, you have one dose of the vaccine, that still has a pretty high efficacy. Go meet the MD

. If you’re really concerned ig you could go with a mask on and not drink. May not give you the best look, but tbh that’s almost certainly not going to cost you a return offer. Blowing off the meeting entirely though is another matter and could cost you. At the end of the day you have to do a cost/benefit analysis of each option and see what works.

how about this: wear a mask all the time and not taking it off? (so not drinking)

awkward but shows that you care about the role but also the virus.

People here are being unnecessarily mean but I agree with the sentiment. We take thousands of risks every day and at this point, the risk of catching/transmitting COVID as a young person who is partially vaccinated among other young people who are fully vaccinated is very low (and the odds of serious complications are an order of magnitude lower). You have to draw the line somewhere, because everything you do has some inherent risk, whether it's crossing the street, getting on a flight, or even eating from a buffet.

I'm super confused why the OP is getting shit here. We have no clue about OP's health history. What if they are a high-risk patient or had someone close to them die? I dont think citing one-off examples or statistics is useful here, especially when people are emotional about these situations.
Here's my concern and I think this is most important. What if there are other seniors in the group that are COVID-consious and would be pissed if they found out that someone who hasn't been fully vaccinated is attending? I think the risk you're taking is too high for minimal benefits. If you're a strong performer, your Director won't care if you missed 1 event as long as you get shit done. If you're not comfortable going i would say something along the lines of, "Hey X, thanks for the invite. I was really looking forward to meeting you and the rest of the team in person but to be honest I've completed 1 dose of the vaccine and since I'm not sure about the COVID-consiousness of the group I would uncomfrotable putting anyone at risk. I hope to have my final dose completed in the next week or so and look forward to attending future events."
Imo, drinks with seniors are helpful but play a minimal role in your annual feedback or promotions (especially as a junior). There are going to be plenty such events (even more so after COVID) and missing 1 for a legitimate reason is totally acceptable. I think exercising bad judgement and someone finding out that aren't vaccinated reflects even more poorly then being perceived as a "pussy"
