For bankers from non-targets eyes ONLY

Okay, now that it’s just all of us non-target guys.... a few questions for the current bankers:

  • Do you get as many networking emails from current students at your alma mater as you expected you would? More? Less?

  • Do you consider responding to networking emails from alums of other non-target schools? How does that go? “Hi I noticed we both aren’t from HPY”?

  • Any other interesting perspectives on networking?

Thanks!

I don't get too many from my Alma Mater, which was a very good school but definitely not a target. I get some from kids from schools in the same conference who point it out, which is fine. I usually just respond (or don't respond) at random to networking emails so long as the kid doesn't have a really bad resume, so overall the school is not much of a factor.

Dayman?

If I'm reaching out to a non-alum who also went to a non-target, should I include my resume to try and increase my response rate or does it not really matter?

I went to a strong school but one that didn't focus on finance, so we definitely weren't a target for any banks. I would say that I get a few emails per year from kids that currently attend my alma mater and I respond to all of them to give them at least an initial 30 minutes of advice / background on IB, my firm, etc. Some of them suck, some of them are good and I pass along the good ones to HR.

For random kids reaching out to me, I respond to like half to 2/3 of them at random (I also for some reason get a lot of them) and it really depends on what type of week they catch me on. If I am super busy, then highly unlikely I respond (if they follow up with me, much better shot but don't follow up more than once) and if my week is chill then I will set up calls with 3-4 people, sometimes more.

My advice is to hit up your alumni network as best as possible; most of those people will answer and will likely pass you along to someone else (assuming you are solid during the call). Outside of that, it's a volume game. I sent out a ridiculous amount of emails back in the day and maybe had a 20% response rate from people that weren't alumni or a referral. Good luck out there!
