Go from Capital Markets non-IB internship to IB full-time?

Context: I’m in 2nd year in a Canada top Uni. If I get 2 internships in Toronto at either TD, BMO, or RBC in securities, capital markets, or wealth management, is that manoeuvrable into a full-time IB move or is IB primarily return offers and hiring from ppl who have other bank IB experience?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from a non-IB internship in capital markets, securities, or wealth management into a full-time IB role is challenging but not impossible. Here's what you need to know:

  1. Return Offers Dominate IB Hiring: Investment banking full-time roles in Canada, especially at top banks like TD, BMO, and RBC, heavily favor candidates who have completed IB summer analyst internships. These internships often lead to return offers, making it the primary pipeline for full-time positions.

  2. Networking is Key: Without prior IB experience, you'll need to leverage networking aggressively. Being in Toronto, you have proximity to key players in the industry. Attend events, connect with alumni, and build relationships with professionals in IB.

  3. Highlight Transferable Skills: Capital markets and securities internships can provide relevant skills like financial modeling, market analysis, and client interaction. Tailor your resume to emphasize these skills and how they align with IB responsibilities.

  4. Consider Off-Cycle or Boutique Opportunities: If you don't secure a full-time IB role immediately, look for off-cycle internships or positions at boutique investment banks. These can serve as stepping stones to larger firms.

  5. Timing and Persistence: Start preparing early for full-time recruiting, as timelines can be tight. Be persistent and open to lateral moves within the bank or industry.

While the path is competitive, with strategic planning and effort, it's possible to make the leap into IB.
