Have I screwed up my chances of breaking into IB because of my GPA?
I'm kind of in a mess. I was a star student in high school( Salutatorian , 1540 SAT) but got kinda screwed over in college. I messed up my freshman first semester due to my own inability to pay attention/focus and some personal issues and got a 3.0 and second semester was decent with a 3.7. I currently stand with a 3.37 GPA at the end of my freshman year. I was able to secure a pretty good internship with a F500 tech company for my freshman summer. I'm an ORM and I go to college in Georgia(not sure how this would affect my chances). Anyway I just have one semester before recuruiting and I'm not sure if it's even worth it with my combination GPA, ORM
Yep, you’re done bozo. You’ll never break in, just give up before you start.
Obviously kidding; here’s my 2 cents as an outsider looking in. Who cares? Do your best to improve your GPA and network. When it comes time to apply then apply.
Your GPA is your GPA, sitting there questioning if it’s too low does absolutely nothing to help you improve it. If some stranger on the internet tells you it’s too low, is that really going to persuade you to not apply? You can’t change the past, you just have to work with what you have to change the future.
Thanks for your reply! I guess I will have to work with whatever I have. I was just asking if it is even realistic to break in. I go to a decent college in Georgia(Georgia Tech, UGA, Spelman, Emory) type of college so I'm already at a disadvantage there because I'm not in the northeast. What is the best way to break in from this stand point?
Congrats on attending Spelman
Plenty of time to pull up your GPA by your junior year. If you pull off 3.8-3.9 for 2 years, you can get yourself back up to around 3.7 cgpa. You can still recruit for some IB roles then. GPA alone won’t be the gating item to getting into IB ultimately in a FT capacity by the time you graduate. Stay focused, don’t second guess and you’ll be fine.

Not that different than if you had a 3.7-3.8 GPA. Network, tap alumni, lots of informational interviews to get smart on the firm/team/sector/deals, etc. Just don’t let GPA bother you and have your story straight. Beyond that, it’s the numbers game. Think of yourself as a middle market bank pitching for a deal against bulge brackets. You could still win but uphill battle makes it more rewarding in the end.
Overall GTech and Emory are way better schools than the others listed. Should not be in the same group.
I honestly wouldn't worry too much as the other comments said. However, do make sure you are scheduling properly and consult with advisors with your course load and making sure you're not overloading too many core classes without some geneds and all to help maintain a good GPA track record. Overall, don't stress too much if you don't get into IB directly either. There are plenty of great opportunities in the financial area of the job market!
Bro ur chilling. I finished w a 3.33 freshman year. Recruiting for SA rn with a 3.5 and had SDs at top BBs and 2 MM offers
I’m just going to be brutally honest because the other comments aren’t. Unless you go to Emory which is the only target school in Georgia, you’re in a rough spot. You only have sophomore fall to bring your GPA up before recruiting starts sophomore spring. Unless you’re diversity, it’s probably going to be tough.
Yep, prospect said he goes to Emory
I don’t agree with this unless you’re referring specifically to BB/EB. How hard is it to get into MM/LMM shops these days? You can always get your foot in the door and lateral up.
This is honestly the reality. If OP is not at Emory, even a 3.7-3.8 would make it difficult to break in. I have a cousin(ORM) who got BB IBD from Emory with a 3.5 though so OP might have a chance if they're at Emory. A 3.4 is low from anywhere unfortunately. Consulting recruiting happens later so OP you could try for that if you manage to bring that GPA up; unfortunately, consulting is even more prestige oriented so you would have to be at Emory or Georgia Tech for that.
