Houlihan Rx Technical Exam

Recently received an invite for the superday at Houlihan Rx for the 2025 analyst position. Does anyone have any insight into the technical exam (ie how long, types of questions, how much weight it carries, preparing tips, etc)? Thank you!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about preparing for a technical exam at Houlihan Lokey (HL) Restructuring (RX):

Insights into the Technical Exam:

  1. Types of Questions:

    • Quantitative Questions: Expect questions on basic bond math (e.g., estimating YTM, understanding the impact of bond maturity changes), waterfall questions (e.g., identifying the impaired class, calculating recovery rates), and finding interest rates given leverage and coverage ratios.
    • Qualitative Questions: These will be RX-specific and may test your understanding of the bankruptcy system and the mechanics of debt.
    • Classic Technical Questions: Similar to those in a typical IB interview but with a focus on restructuring.
  2. Preparation Tips:

    • Study Resources:
      • Stephen Moyer's Distressed Debt Analysis: This book provides a great overview of the bankruptcy system and the mechanics of debt, which is crucial for RX interviews.
      • Houlihan Lokey's Case Study: Reviewing this will give you a good overview of the types of cases you might encounter.
    • Practice: Make sure to practice classic technical questions, as well as RX-specific quantitative and qualitative questions. Identify and work on your weak areas.
  3. Exam Duration and Weight:

    • The exact duration and weight of the technical exam can vary, but it is a significant part of the interview process. The expectation in RX interviews is not necessarily to get every question right but to show a contextual understanding of restructuring.
  4. General Advice:

    • Contextual Understanding: In RX interviews, demonstrating a solid understanding of what restructuring entails and the key concepts is crucial. Even if you don't get every technical question right, showing that you grasp the broader context can be very beneficial.
    • Interview Performance: While getting one or two technical questions wrong in a classic IB interview might be a dealbreaker, RX interviews are more forgiving if you can show a strong overall understanding.

Additional Notes:

  • Superday Experience: For HL RX superdays, candidates have reported that the process can be intense, with multiple rounds of technical and behavioral questions. Preparation should be thorough, covering both technical knowledge and the ability to discuss your thought process clearly.

By focusing on these areas and utilizing the recommended resources, you can enhance your preparation for the HL RX technical exam and increase your chances of success. Good luck!
