How is UBS Hong Kong?

Hi WSO,

Assume you're a sophomore in college, and you have an offer for an internship this summer. Don't know how structured the internship will be or what group or anything, but it's FO. You have another promising lead at a different European BB firm, but it is exactly that: promising as opposed to material. Do you say yes to UBS or bank on a different offer?

Main concerns:

I understand UBS has suffered a lot over the past few years - people talk them down a lot. . How different is the situation in HK/Asia? What is the reputation of UBS in that region specifically? Anybody have an idea?

How well would a sophomore gig at UBS position me to be able to land a junior year SA role at BX/GS or similar firms?

Jesus, people on here spread misinformation and it catches like wildfire. UBS is one of the top 3 banks in Australia, and I'm pretty sure it's solid in Asia as well - a friend of a friend interned there in IB for his SA and was getting killed because he was staffed on so many different transactions. Take UBS because a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush (you don't know if you'll get the other offer) and UBS is a good bird in hand.

Only clarification I would make is it depends on what your FO role would be - gotta find that out.

Hey guys this was a while ago. I got an offer with UBS but turned it down. It's still a good shop but just losing its luster. Upper/mid-tier would be an appropriate descriptor. You can read my posts for more details about banks here: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/ibd-sa-hk-baml-vs-db-vs-nomura-vs…

I've gone through 2 rounds of IBD recruiting in HK already (complicated situation - I'm currently on my second degree) so feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding the banks here. Most of the advice on WSO is really US-Centric.

It's a mixture of mainland Chinese, ABCs, Koreans, local HK, Australians, Taiwanese, Malaysians/Singaporean. Generally very friendly internally but goes very aggressive against other banks on projects.

I know for the summer that the company will generally pay for housing in an apartment, not sure if it will be company-owned or not, likely will be a similar situation for full-time.
