How possible is it to move from back to front office as an intern

Going into CIB operations this summer, graduating early in the Fall, and wondering if this will help or kill my chances of getting into the front or even middle office. Heard ops is a dead end and you just stay in ops your whole career.

Impossible as an intern

Would recommend re-recruiting into something tangential (corp banking, middle office, commercial banking) some banks are very against interns moving divisions so be careful here and prepare to externally recruit too. IB is going to be out but some of these nearby divisions would work, or things like Big 4 TAS, valuation firms etc

Thanks for this. My plan was to try to network my ass off with the front office guys, and see if they have any small tasks or projects I can work on for them since I'm only working roughly 40 hours...anything to help me learn the business better and still provide value. Then after the 10-week program would express my interest and apply for full-time roles in treasury or corporate banking at the same bank.

Even their own interns provide little value to them... someone trying to network in is not expected to provide any value.

Most people are happy to help a bootstrapping kid find the right career path. Chances are someone helped them along the way and 75%+ of people will happily grab coffee with you and give you some career advice or insight about their job. I obviously would not say "I want to do corp banking so I can get to IB" but if you articulate an interest in their area, ask them questions about their role, etc - that is plenty.
