How to network for group placement?

Hey all!

I’m an incoming SA, and was wondering when/how to approach networking to ensure I end up at a good group. Placement itself won’t be until spring, but was wondering if not reaching out may hurt.

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips for networking for group placement as an incoming Summer Analyst (SA):

  1. Start Early:

    • Begin networking well before the official group placement process starts. This allows you to build relationships and gather information about different groups.
  2. Reach Out to Current Analysts/Associates:

    • Look up current analysts and associates in the groups you are interested in. Initiate conversations to understand the group dynamics and culture.
  3. Limit the Number of Contacts:

    • Aim to talk to 4-5 people within the group. This ensures you have enough support without overwhelming yourself or the group members.
  4. Ask Relevant Questions:

    • Prepare thoughtful questions about the specific verticals or sectors the group covers. For example, if it's a Tech group, ask about NTM revenue multiples or ARPU analyses.
  5. Use LinkedIn:

    • Utilize LinkedIn to research the backgrounds of the people you will be speaking with. This helps in asking informed questions and showing genuine interest.
  6. Send Calendar Invites:

    • Once a meeting is scheduled, send an email calendar invite. This helps in ensuring the meeting is not double-booked and shows your organizational skills.
  7. Be Polished:

    • Make sure you are well-prepared and polished before reaching out. This includes knowing your behaviorals and having a clear idea of what you want to ask.
  8. Follow Up:

    • After your conversations, follow up with a thank-you email. This helps in keeping the connection warm and shows your appreciation.

By following these steps, you can effectively network and position yourself for a favorable group placement.

I would wait until you're closer to the internship start. When placement comes around, you'll get a list of key contacts of each group that you'll start networking with. Typically includes the staffer and other summer leads (usually another analyst/associate). On your calls make sure to ask thoughtful, genuine questions and try to know the group as much as you can. The more people you speak to within a group, the better your ranking when it comes to matching. Placement is a match process where you rank groups and they rank you.
