Is it difficult to find something in the range, what amenities are you looking at? Seems like there are some decent ones on Streeteasy

Living by myself in a studio (found through airbnb) for NYC SA this June around the East Village/Union Square area, and I'm still paying more than 2k a month lol. It's more like 2.4k a month. Shit is kinda tiny too. Rents have absolutely exploded. The 40x rule is also pretty limiting

Anyone else planning on splitting a 1 bedroom by moving in with their SO?

Rent will be ~$1.4k. A big "adult" step for me but we've been together for 2.5 years and practically already live together unofficially. Plus given the extremity of IB hours, it'll be easier to spend time with her more often. And rent is half cheaper. Win-win

Planning to do this as well, although I'm in Chicago so we'll be living like kings in a luxury building hahaha

Bold of you to assume that I have a SO lol. Not a bad option for sure if you do. Have no clue where if/when I'll get to that level of closeness w someone lol

This is kinda a dumb move unless you are really seriously planning to marry her (and you’re probably 21, 22 rn?).

You get trapped living with them, so if something goes bad you’re going to be fucked trying to find some place to move while also getting crushed with work.

Even if things turn out okay, you have very little personal space - you have no idea how small New York apartments feel, especially if you are WFH multiple days during the week/on weekends. You will want your own bed during super late nights, your own shower, your own kitchen, etc.

Would highly suggest against it unless you are really serious, and even still moving in together because it’s the convenient thing to do is a bad idea.

What are the ideal number of roommates to have to get the best per person monthly rates? 2 roommates? 1 roommate?

Live with 4 roommates right now in a doorman building. Paying $1595 because I refuse to pay these rent increases living alone.

I don’t really agree with this (although I felt similar when I first moved to nyc), a doorman really isn’t all that useful (unless you are concerned about security and live in an area that is risky - even then not that useful). Mostly helpful for getting packages and random stuff, but a super will also help you out with that.

I thought the same thing when moving to nyc (mostly from a security perspective) and realized it isn’t worth it. A nice perk but only worth a small bump in price.

Had the same problem and while looking for an apartment I found the possibility to get a single room at the Kolping House.
It's only $1,000, so pretty cheap, and since I get my European salary but have to cover the NY costs, it was the best deal I could get.

wondering the same here. know nth about new york, tryna find roomies too

Basically, it doesn't matter when you start looking for an apartment. But the later you start, the less affordable apartment will be available and the higher the rent will be.

No this isn’t true. In nyc you cannot start looking too early, units for rent are normally looking to be rented immediately. I normally recommend starting about 4-6 weeks before your planned move (8 weeks at most - mostly to get a sense for the areas you are interested in), because if you find a place but don’t want to move in for 2-3 months the only option is to pay for those in between months, if not they’ll rent it to someone else. So the inventory you see 8+ weeks out won’t be what’s actually available to you.

My current 2bed apartment in midtown is raising prices to $3,200. For this price, no doorman or washer/dryer in unit or building. However, if your offices are in midtown, then it’s a great deal because walking to work is doable. DM if your interested in my building.

apartments are renting in days from initial listing on street easy. Best to contact building leasing office directly.

same here. looking for roomies and want to stay in this area.

$1500 in midtown with doorman, elevator, gym. My BF is covering a portion of my half since he's an associate

Edit: Bring on the MS virgin fucks
