Where is everyone looking? What are your budgets looking like for rent? And where is your office in relation to your neighborhood of choice if you could get your first pick?

In this market, you're probably paying something like 2 - 2.2 for something nice-ish that's close to subways, isn't a walk up etc.
Given recent base increases, I'd say that's affordable. Location wise, everyone has a different opinion but mine is WV, Meatpacking, Flatiron / Nomad, Gramercy.
2 - 2.2 in a nice elevator building is a pipe dream in todays real estate market
What would you say is more realistic?
Wait…like to live alone?
Definitely meant with roommates. Studio or 1 bed you're prob closer to 3k. Probably have to live in midtown or HK or LES if you want 2.2 for an elevator building.
2-2.5 (before utilities) ideally in west village, commuting to Bryant park.
Are these 2-2.5K rents with or without roommates?
Given recent prices it’s with roommates sadly
You can find studios for $2.3-2.5k but you get a lot more for your money if you have roommates. A $5k split 2 bedroom is much nicer than a $2.5k studio.
Was hoping for ~2k in Murray hill or East Village w roommates but like everyone saying prices are crazy rn
Is it difficult to find something in the range, what amenities are you looking at? Seems like there are some decent ones on Streeteasy
Living by myself in a studio (found through airbnb) for NYC SA this June around the East Village/Union Square area, and I'm still paying more than 2k a month lol. It's more like 2.4k a month. Shit is kinda tiny too. Rents have absolutely exploded. The 40x rule is also pretty limiting
I'm maxing out at 2k and that is with 1-2 roommates.
To everyone saying around 2k with roommates, is this per person??
At least.
2-2.8k, ideally 2.5k with one roommate
Anyone else planning on splitting a 1 bedroom by moving in with their SO?
Rent will be ~$1.4k. A big "adult" step for me but we've been together for 2.5 years and practically already live together unofficially. Plus given the extremity of IB hours, it'll be easier to spend time with her more often. And rent is half cheaper. Win-win
Thinking the same
Planning to do this as well, although I'm in Chicago so we'll be living like kings in a luxury building hahaha
Bold of you to assume that I have a SO lol. Not a bad option for sure if you do. Have no clue where if/when I'll get to that level of closeness w someone lol
Same xd
This is kinda a dumb move unless you are really seriously planning to marry her (and you’re probably 21, 22 rn?).
You get trapped living with them, so if something goes bad you’re going to be fucked trying to find some place to move while also getting crushed with work.
Even if things turn out okay, you have very little personal space - you have no idea how small New York apartments feel, especially if you are WFH multiple days during the week/on weekends. You will want your own bed during super late nights, your own shower, your own kitchen, etc.
Would highly suggest against it unless you are really serious, and even still moving in together because it’s the convenient thing to do is a bad idea.
I'll be 24 this year and do plan on it. Appreciate the concern though; that's good advice for any new couples.
I lived in her apartment during my 6-month WFH IB internship, so she knows what the job lifestyle is like. Without her there, I would've had a very, very depressing 6 months.
Best of luck to you, good sir. Did this myself for a while and although financially it was a perfect set up, the amount of headache that comes if the relationship doesn't pan out was not worth it.
My roommates are doing this. Check my comment on the thread for details lol
What are the ideal number of roommates to have to get the best per person monthly rates? 2 roommates? 1 roommate?
1 roommate and have someone sleep in the living room (1BR) is the best deal per unit cost. Although you’d have to share a bathroom in that arrangement.
Live with 4 roommates right now in a doorman building. Paying $1595 because I refuse to pay these rent increases living alone.
Doing the same thing right now. I think doorman + roommates >>> living alone with no doorman.
I don’t really agree with this (although I felt similar when I first moved to nyc), a doorman really isn’t all that useful (unless you are concerned about security and live in an area that is risky - even then not that useful). Mostly helpful for getting packages and random stuff, but a super will also help you out with that.
I thought the same thing when moving to nyc (mostly from a security perspective) and realized it isn’t worth it. A nice perk but only worth a small bump in price.
How's living with 4 roommates? Too noisy or nah?
Can you DM me. I'm looking for a similar place but also can swallow a higher price
Had the same problem and while looking for an apartment I found the possibility to get a single room at the Kolping House.
It's only $1,000, so pretty cheap, and since I get my European salary but have to cover the NY costs, it was the best deal I could get.
When do we start looking for apartments if the start date is late July? When should we have a lease signed up?
wondering the same here. know nth about new york, tryna find roomies too
Ayo same
Basically, it doesn't matter when you start looking for an apartment. But the later you start, the less affordable apartment will be available and the higher the rent will be.
No this isn’t true. In nyc you cannot start looking too early, units for rent are normally looking to be rented immediately. I normally recommend starting about 4-6 weeks before your planned move (8 weeks at most - mostly to get a sense for the areas you are interested in), because if you find a place but don’t want to move in for 2-3 months the only option is to pay for those in between months, if not they’ll rent it to someone else. So the inventory you see 8+ weeks out won’t be what’s actually available to you.
My current 2bed apartment in midtown is raising prices to $3,200. For this price, no doorman or washer/dryer in unit or building. However, if your offices are in midtown, then it’s a great deal because walking to work is doable. DM if your interested in my building.
apartments are renting in days from initial listing on street easy. Best to contact building leasing office directly.
is this 3.2k for two people or one person?
Yes, 2 bdrm
Just signed a lease for $3,200 for a 2BR in Long Island City. No doorman but W/D in-unit and is ~1,100 sqft. Splitting it $2,200 / $1,000 with my gf.
can i be ur gf
anyone know whats a good place for midtown east? thx
same here. looking for roomies and want to stay in this area.
Is it worth it to put down money for a home outside of NYC then hop on a train to go to work every morning?
Feel like definitely possible to get a cheap place still, no? Would you guys say rent today > rent Pre covid?
just got a place in midtown for $1325 per person with significant other, its a walkup but 5 minute walk from work in midtown and huge living room with laundry. find love and rent will be cheap
$1500 in midtown with doorman, elevator, gym. My BF is covering a portion of my half since he's an associate
Edit: Bring on the MS virgin fucks
$3k studio. But it has in unit W/D and some nicer amenities. A bit far from the office though but worth it to live alone imo.
Yall dont live in manhattan? Where are you finding a place for 2k??
