Is it possible to go from Big4 (Central Asia) to IB (US/UK)?

Hi all,

28years, male, currently Manager-level in Big4 M&A (Central Asia), ~7 years total experience.

Closed several mid-market transactions (sell-side), mostly in Metals & Mining. Deal sizes $50–$150m.

Long-term goal: transition to global Private Equity (US/UK). I understand the classic path is IB to PE, but I’m currently in a non-target geography and non-target university background.

Constraints:
- Local university (non-target)
- Visa limitations for US/UK
- Limited exposure to large-cap transactions

Questions:
1) Is lateral move to IB in London realistic from my position?
2) Would moving first to a regional IB (CEE / Middle East) improve positioning?
3) Is MBA (LBS / INSEAD) the only viable reset?
4) Any examples of similar transitions from emerging markets?

Appreciate direct feedback.

Transitioning from a Big4 M&A role in Central Asia to Investment Banking (IB) in the US/UK is challenging but not impossible. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s a breakdown of your situation and potential strategies:

1) Is a lateral move to IB in London realistic from your position?

  • Challenges: Your non-target university background, visa limitations, and limited exposure to large-cap transactions are significant hurdles. IB firms in London typically prioritize candidates with direct IB experience, strong academic credentials, and large-cap deal exposure.
  • Opportunities: Your mid-market M&A experience in Metals & Mining could be valuable, especially if you target boutique or sector-focused IB firms in London. Networking and securing referrals will be critical to overcoming the non-target background.

2) Would moving first to a regional IB (CEE / Middle East) improve positioning?

  • Yes, this is a viable strategy. Moving to a regional IB in CEE or the Middle East can provide you with direct IB experience, which is often a prerequisite for transitioning to larger markets like London or New York. Regional IBs may also offer exposure to larger transactions and a more recognizable brand name, which can strengthen your profile.

3) Is an MBA (LBS / INSEAD) the only viable reset?

  • An MBA from a top program like LBS or INSEAD is one of the most effective ways to reset your career and gain access to IB or PE roles in the US/UK. These programs have strong placement records in IB and PE, and they can help address your non-target background while providing visa sponsorship opportunities.
  • However, an MBA is not the only path. If you can secure a role in a regional IB or a well-known boutique, you may be able to transition without an MBA, though it will likely take longer.

4) Any examples of similar transitions from emerging markets?

  • Based on previous WSO threads, there are examples of professionals from emerging markets successfully transitioning to IB or PE in the US/UK. Common paths include:
    • Moving to a regional IB or boutique in a more established market (e.g., CEE, Middle East, or Asia-Pacific) before transitioning to London or New York.
    • Pursuing an MBA at a top program to reset their career and gain access to global opportunities.
    • Leveraging sector expertise (e.g., Metals & Mining) to target niche or sector-focused IB/PE firms.

Recommendations:

  1. Network aggressively: Build connections with professionals in IB and PE, especially those with similar backgrounds. Referrals can help bypass some of the traditional barriers.
  2. Consider regional IBs: Target firms in CEE or the Middle East to gain direct IB experience and improve your positioning for London or New York.
  3. Evaluate MBA options: If feasible, aim for a top MBA program like LBS or INSEAD to reset your career and gain access to global opportunities.
  4. Highlight your sector expertise: Metals & Mining is a specialized sector, and your experience could be valuable to firms with a focus on natural resources.

While the path is challenging, a combination of strategic moves and networking can help you achieve your long-term goal of transitioning to global Private Equity.
