What's it like going into banking after getting a JD. Recruiting? Transition from Law -> Finance?

Former lawyer here. Recruiting is easiest if you plan on trying to enter banking during 1L or during the first 1-4 years as an associate. Any later and you’re taking too much of a seniority cut. The best practice areas to enter are M&A, and bankruptcy/restructuring. Fund formation, capital markets, and debt finance will not provide you exits. Nothing law school teaches will give you the knowledge base for interviews or success in your first role in finance. If you are not an attorney or in law school currently, stay as far away as possible. If you are a 1L, it is safe to drop out now and cut your losses. If you are a 2L, lockdown a law firm offer for the summer and renege if you receive an offer in banking (career services will hate you and refer to your situation to 1Ls during orientation for years). Same deal with reneging as a 3L. In 2L, consider applying to the business school if it is decent, won’t be exorbitantly expensive, and won’t add two years to your course of study.
