Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights and advice for networking when alumni are not responsive:

  1. Persistence and Follow-ups:

    • It's common to face challenges in getting responses from alumni. Persistence is key. Continue to follow up politely if you don't hear back after your initial outreach.
  2. Broaden Your Network:

    • Don't limit yourself to alumni. Reach out to professionals in the industry who may not have a direct connection to your school. Many users have found success networking with individuals who have no prior connection to them.
  3. Utilize Common Connections:

    • If you have any mutual connections, ask for warm introductions. This can significantly increase your chances of getting a response.
  4. Cold Calling and Emailing:

    • Cold calling and emailing can be effective, but manage your expectations. A response rate of around 10% is considered good for non-alumni contacts.
  5. Leverage Online Platforms:

    • Use LinkedIn and other professional networking sites to connect with individuals in your target firms. Join relevant groups and participate in discussions to increase your visibility.
  6. Tailor Your Approach:

    • Customize your messages to show genuine interest and knowledge about the person you are reaching out to and their firm. This can make your outreach stand out.
  7. Seek Help from Career Services:

    • Utilize your school's career services for additional networking opportunities and resources. They may have contacts or advice that can help you.
  8. Stay Positive and Adapt:

    • Networking can be challenging, but stay positive and adapt your strategies as needed. Each interaction is a learning experience that can help you improve your approach.

If you need more specific advice or have further questions, feel free to ask!

I had a disappointing conversation with a VP from Jefferies SF two months ago. They spent two hours boasting about their firm and mentioned they were hiring but never followed up. I wish they had been upfront if they didn't think I was a good fit.

At this point, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or how I can improve. It's frustrating to feel like I'm not making progress in my job search. If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it. Congrats to those who have successfully landed a role at Jefferies SF or any other firm, its not easy and i dont know how you guys do it

Yes, oil and gas Houston. absolute sweatshop but given the deals they have done you will probably get some good experience, still nuts that they are recruiting in June the market must be on fire

These are almost certainly positions opening up because of reneging.

guy i spoke with said it wasnt renegging just that they anticipate good things in the market plus jefferies is growing fast asf but he could have just been capping
